You know what, fuck it. Figure skating is now my favorite sport. Unless there's another one that will let a competitor dress up in a silly costume and do all these silly jumps and wiggles and fall on purpose, IN THE OLYMPICS, there's no contest
As a former figure skater I feel obliged to point out how technically difficult that little Chaplin patter would be. See the kind of speed he's getting up to and then immediately moving into that "walk" - sometimes without even a brake manoeuvre. The momentum you build up when moving at speed has to get released somewhere so stopping like that is usually an easy way to topple over (not on purpose). In the true spirit of Chaplin he is making very hard and potentially dangerous things look easy.
For anyone who might've been searching for who the skater is, @jay42 found out ! The athlete is Petr Barna, from the 1992 Winter Olympics

Okay but I went and found the clip and NOTHING could prepare your for this man’s delivery.
I like how the video had me thinking: okay someone edited the screencaps into saying their own joke - because there’s small words behind the yellow ones! - only to be proven wrong. Just wait for it :)
I was not prepared for the full experience, even with the warning.
Meanwhile, I first heard Emo Phillips’s comedy back in high school through a purely audio medium, and this is how I found out he looked like this.

This is the best picture I could find of how they customized the Studebaker so Fozzie could appear to drive the car. They crammed the real driver in the trunk. I think he was driving from a video monitor.
the fear I felt with the blurred pink mass in my inbox under the harried confession of mistakes
every day I go through the tags on this post and collect the 10k ones to scream at them
no. NO NO
never. it will never be a 10k post. if this post gets 10k notes I'll fucking eat my words (by that I mean I will scribble down 'words' on a small piece of paper and eat it)
my fate is gonna be eating paper if this gets 10k notes
you know what. if this gets 20k I'll paint the words 'oh no' on my nails. I'm already suffering enough might as well make it worse

Watching Star Wars was a mistake. For years I’ve derived so much pleasure from seeing discourse on my timeline that’s like “it’s actually a pretty good writing choice that Glimbo Knutts manipulated the imbledimbians in the force to make Darth Freeble his personal jedi froogler. It gives the original trilogy more depth” and not knowing what the fuck anybody is talking about. But now I do and it’s ruined. I understand what you freak ass dorks are saying and it isn’t fun anymore. Glimbo Knutts making Darth Freeble his jedi froogler DOES give the original trilogy more depth. This sucks man
I once had to explain to my then-gf that Star Wars is like "at the end of the day, even a single person can be a ripple in the movement to destroy fascism. the empire will crumble when confronted with the inherent goodness of the human spirit. to hope is not weak, our hope makes us strong. ISN'T THAT RIGHT, Admiral Beebo?" and then a little frog in a fighter jet goes "BEEBO WEEE-HOO!"
The choice to remove Yub Nub from the end of ROTJ was a mistake. To remove the Ewok language and musical celebratory traditions from the film and replace it with a genericized "Victory Celebration" piece that feels incredibly non-digetic but more digestible to modern audiences who have a specific musical palate they "expect" from Star Wars does nothing except enforce a bland human-centric worldview that treats Yub Nub — an in-universe cultural work with actual lyrics that are a point of interest — as a laughable, non-serious display of joy in the face of the Ewoks' taking down of their oppressors. It takes away some of the points that the end was trying to stress — the existence of a planet's individual joys and freedoms that the end of the Empire made possible, the freedom and flourishing of cultural diversity that was being stamped out because fascism demands homogeny, and the need for (and joy and belonging you will find in!) acceptance of those who don't look and act like you (a plot point in ROTJ was for the mostly-human protags to accept the Ewoks as allies despite their appearance, and echoes Lucas's emphasis of 'judge me by my size, do you' character aspect of Yoda in ESB) to create and keep a world worth living in.
...is a real fucking thought I have had and the Ewoks look like this btw.
if you’re 26 and older, reblog.
I remember when I was 26. The mastodon hunts were the highlight of my day, and we cheered whenever we made fire...
yeah, he sure is
Guys for fuck's sake he took himself out of the group chat because he is a) aware that he does not have security clearance to see what they were discussing b) aware that they will use this fact to prosecute him/go after other people at his magazine. Sometimes, someone's opinion on Zionism is not actually relevant to the specific deeply insane news story they accidentally got bundled into that in a sane world would see everyone else in the group chat fired and arrested for treason, and bringing it up as it it's a mitigating factor is just being conspiratorial about da joos. You can dislike or even hate this person without doing a pepe silvia board that makes the most consequential opsec failure of the past eighty years a, what. I'm not even sure what's going on here. Is this a Mossad plot? Is that what's being claimed?
If he valued the lives of people in general he would have revealed all the intel so Yemini civilians could take shelter ahead of the attacks. But he doesn't, probably because he thinks the lives of Arabic people aren't worth anything.
Did none of you read the article????
He states:
He thought the group he had been added to was a weird, sophisticated hoax for the first week he was in it
When he started having suspicions it was real, he could not prove that this group was real or really had these individuals in it
He did not receive any specifics about anything until 2 hours before the bombings happened
He could not prove anything was going to happen before then but made sure that he was refreshing X/news sites to see if it was real - when he had that information, he left and immediately started contacting people to confirm the story
There is no way that an individual reporter would have been able to stop an illegal clandestine military operation by a very racist and hostile administration with two hours' notice. I know you want to be mad at him because you don't understand how real life works, but to act like this is a spiteful anti-Arab move on the part of Goldberg, who whatever you think of him is also quite often a critic of Israel, is straight up Qanon behavior. It's actually really impressive that this article came out within 10 days of this happening, because the Atlantic's lawyers must have been on every single word.
I don't know why you are blaming the whistleblower and not the very racist administration ordering these bombings (well, I do, but you're going to get mad if I say why).

emperor kuzco was clearly gay
hes 19, with unlimited power, and he ain’t got a gf. the only time we see him interact with any women his own age is when he’s rejecting like 7 of them rapid fire. he pretends to date pacha in a gag that lasts like 10 solid minutes. listen to me god damnit
Okay, but just in case anyone is coming to tumblr dot com for my hot takes on 20+ year old kids' movies: Kuzco super WAS gay (or at least coded as such) and of course, I didn't get it until I watched it as a gay grownup.
He is played obviously camp and dramatic, for a start, and there is the aforementioned "hate your hair/not likely/yikes yikes yikes/let me guess you have a great personality" summary dismissal of all his potential brides. Then he spends dinner asking Yzma about Kronk ("so he seems nice? He's what, in his late twenties?") and otherwise being slightly obsessed with him.
Then there is the whole Adventure of Doom with Pacha, him being ever huffy about the Kiss of Life, and then the restaurant gag where Kuzco takes to playing Pacha's fake wife and dressing up in ladies' clothing with great gusto (reinforced by the waitress' "bless you for coming out in public" remark when Pacha says they're on their honeymoon). Then when he is finally de-llamafied, we don't see him paired off with the obligatory girl from the lineup earlier, as might otherwise be expected in a Disney movie. Instead he is still single, but goes to found family it up with Pacha, Chica, Kronk, etc, which dare we remark is a very queer trope.
In short, I have no idea how a Disney movie with no white people (all the characters are Indigenous/people of color), a gay king, cross-dressing jokes, and the most offbeat plot of all time actually ever got made (can you imagine the Family Friendly Mouse doing that today? Let us also talk about Kronk because he is a brilliant deconstruction of both toxic masculinity and the musclebound henchman stereotype.) Other than that this was the Chaos Hour of animated movies in the late 90s/early 2000s, and yes.
So yes. There you have it. I will not be taking criticism at this time.
In response to the question “How did a movie like this get made at all much less by fucking Disney?” there was a recent Vulture article that outlines the whole shit show of a history behind this film according to everyone (writers, directors, VAs, Stings) involved. The gist of the story is that they fucked up making a whole, true-to-form Disney musical that never came to see the light of day SO BADLY that Disney switched directors, locked the writer’s room, and didn’t review a single script until weeks after the film was in theaters.
Please, read this article if you have some time. This story is wild, and involves directors being pitted against each other Bake-Off style and a shockingly intimate documentary created by the wife of Sting who, himself was heartbroken by the decimation of the songs he wrote for the film including cutting a fantastic Yzma villain song sung by Eartha Kitt that is SO DAMN GOOD but would not ever have fit the more nailed-down Yzma we would eventually come to know and love. It’s so catchy though, I’m doubling up on calls to action but please listen now:
holy shit read the article. it’s worth it and completely batshit
This is fucking insane
I've never adequately appreciated the batshit brilliance of this joke, I've taken it for granted
We watched this with the FC literally last night so I'm delighted to reblog this again. What a fucking movie.
Just said to @petermorwood last night, "I'd say it's time for a rewatch." Gonna do that right now. (If I have to sit here doing this Mailchimp crap, at least I can have Yzma yelling "Why do we even have this lever?!" in the background.
Sweatbox Documentary ( Full Unedited Version)
Remember that time that Trudie Styler was allowed to make a Making Of Documentary about Kingdom of the Sun/Emperor's New Groove because her husband (Sting) was hired to do the music and this was part of his contract, but the doc showed how much of a disaster the making of this movie was so Disney refused to release it but then it got leaked on the internet and now the internet archive has it?
It is with the heaviest of hearts that I bring you sad news today. Murphy, the eagle who incubated a rock (and later raised a foster eaglet after his rock "hatched"), passed away at age 33 (almost a decade longer than long-lived wild eagles!). A tornado hit his local area. It's believed he sustained blunt force head trauma, likely from spooking during the high winds, as his cage and fellow eagles were unharmed.
Murphy is survived by his foster son, Baby 23-126, who was successfully released into the wild, and a second foster eaglet he was still caring for; this eaglet is expected to be able to be released as well.
I know a lot of people on Tumblr enjoyed seeing his story, and I know we will remember him fondly.
If you were touched by his story and have the means to do so, you can donate to his home, or adopt one of their birds! https://www.worldbirdsanctuary.org/
The WBS is near and dear to my heart, and it's thanks to them that Murphy made it 33 years old and was able to successfully foster 2 eaglets.
