CAPTAIN JANEWAY JUST SAID RPF IS FINE???

it’s such a small motif but the bajoran ear grabbing thing is such an effective way of characterizing the different bajoran religious figures:
when sisko first meets kai opaka, she asks to feel his ear. he’s uncomfortable with it but she’s friendly and he’s putting his best foot forward on behalf of starfleet so he lets her.
the practice returns in the season finale where vedek winn asks to touch his ear as well, but the mannerisms are different. opaka’s friendliness and the fact that she explained the custom first made the question seem genuine; she cared about his consent and he could say no (at least on a personal level though they both knew he wouldn’t for political reasons). winn on the other hand asks as a formality; it’s obvious that she expects the answer to be yes and will be offended if she’s rebuffed.
this is then contrasted with vedek bareil in a kind of classic setup/reminder/payoff kind of thing. when sisko meets him, he notes that bareil doesn’t try to touch his ear and bareil makes a joke about winn doing it. he’s uncomfortable with the practice too and has been trying to get rid of it. so far this is a simple contrast: winn is a traditionalist and bareil is a reformer.
the payoff later in the episode adds depth to this though. winn tries to touch bareil’s ear without asking and he physically prevents her. there are a few different ways to read this: winn feels entitled to do it because he’s also bajoran, or because he’s a colleague; winn is using the tradition to assert dominance over him, knowing it makes him uncomfortable; winn was trying to emulate opaka earlier but doesn’t understand why opaka did things the way she did and by the end of the episode she’s given up. i think all of these are true on some level. regardless of the specifics, winn’s entitlement is highlighted. not only does she cling to tradition, she thinks it overrides other people’s needs and even their bodily autonomy.
Garak smoking a fat space blunt, listening to experimental cardassian music while sketching slutty outfits he wants to dress Bashir up in
I like how the changelings caused a bunch of stringent rules to be made to make sure they didn't infiltrate any organization meanwhile surgery that makes you look like literally anyone has been around since TOS.
"you don't understand. The changelings observe you, and once theyve learned what they need, they kidnap you and replace you. The only way we can tell is with a blood test."
"Oh good so we can use the exact same protocol we use to deal with cardassian sleeper agents then"
bashir looking for a cure for the jem'hadar's ketracel-white dependence should not have been a one-off episode plot and, if continued and possibly given a conclusion of success, could have added a very interesting and satisfying element to the series finale!!!!
Kira, her goofriend and the homoerotic tension between him and his archnemesis
you kidnap your son after putting a failed hit on him. it’s the first time you’ve seen him in years. he immediately says your outfit is ugly and calls you fat.
you are taken as a prisoner of war. you send a coded message to your son and beg him to come rescue you. you wait, deathly ill, telling everybody that you know he will come for you. he shows up, and you immediately call him stupid.
The real mindfuck of Vorta cloning is that it’s not even like reloading a save. They only remember up to the last checkpoint. From the Vorta’s perspective, the thing that killed them is in their future, not their past.
Maybe they’re considering something, planning something, and they go to sync their brain and suddenly they’re in the cloning facility. Ok, obviously it’s time to reconsider that decision. Or maybe it was a different decision, some long chain of events they don’t have the faintest memory of? Even after they get briefed on some of the missing details, it’s hard to know for sure. Did they do something wrong? Did someone else? Was it completely unavoidable? They never have any deaths to learn from, just a growing and ominous string of births.
Anyway, I don’t think the Founders actually changed the formula between Weyoun 6 and 7. I don’t think they had to. The moment Weyoun started doubting, in the privacy of his own mind, he woke up as a clone. And like all the previous times he was born again, he immediately and reflexively flinched away from that train of thought, along with anything else he was thinking of at the time.
Vulcan teen on Vulcan [tiktok] saying "I have just lost track of my father in the grocery store." The camera turns to show the viewers the grocery store in which almost every single older middle-aged man has a bowlcut and long robes. Camera turns back to show the teen's face which is expressionless and yet communicates all it needs to.
Vulcan endocrine systems are so fucked up I know it. What do you mean your reproductive cycles kill you when it's operating Normally. I want to see what happens when they get, like, space endometriosis
We can do this worldbuilding for pornography of course but I'm honestly just thinking about the medical implications. Vulcan hormonal imbalances have to be fucking brutal to live with. Computer show me space pcos
Intersex Vulcan who's been essentially microdosing pon farr this whole time and just rawdogging it white knuckle gripping telling themselves they just need to get more logicaler & finds out later Oops you've had dangerously high androgens converting to stress hormones since you were like 12 actually
Interestingly afaik human medical science doesn't recognize hyperandrogenism in people assigned male as A Thing but this would absolutely be medicalized in Vulcans as it would be A Problem. Considering the
Shoutout to my favorite genre of TOS episode:
i'm not going to force my tuvix opinions on others but i just got recommended an antituvix post from somebody and let me tell you. "he tried to emotionally manipulate the crew to continue existing" is certainly one of the most ways ever to describe a man desperately begging for his life
actually i will. there is something so profoundly sad about the way tuvix insisted on doing two jobs at once as this horrible desperate way to appeal to others who saw his as an abomination simply for who he was and who he wasn't.
also i think people understate just how much janeway's decision was made bc she loves tuvok and wanted him back. loving tuvok and wanting him back is like half her reasoning behind everything. i don't mean this in a judgemental way btw. it's just that there isn't any reason to assume tuvix wouldn't be a good security officer. and somebody else could cook. i think janeway promised tuvok's family to bring him back and this is like 60% why she gets out of bed in the morning.
and when it comes to the ethics/autonomy/neelix and tuvok's consent to be tuvix. well they did not exist. why do people who don't exist have a say over the person who does. also i think tuvix knows better what neelix and tuvok wanted than janeway. and yes i do actually believe that tuvok had a secret repressed want to be tuvix even before he knew this was an option.
anyway i know why they killed tuvix and don't see it happening any other way but i like to imagine a universe where he steals a shuttle and fucks off forever. people use his unwilingness to sacrifice himself for the voy crew as a reason to why he is less than a sum of his parts, because neelix and tuvok would have offered to die. but neelix and tuvok are loved on voyager! and tuvix isn't! tuvix doesn't owe these people shit because they hated him for the moment he was born. be free my tuvix.
the only thing tuvix did wrong was assuming that making himself useful would have bought him the right to exist 🚬🐊
unrelated but one of the bad fanfiction lines that has been trapped in my head for LITERALLY 22 years was a beauty and the beast fanfic in which belle said “be careful, im a virgin in my vagina”. this has been on the tip of my tongue threatening to burst out of my mouth for decades
this one is SOOOO good thank for you sharing. im going to be thinking about po’s honda civic too now
this line from a wolfstar smutfic on ff.net has haunted my every waking thought since 2007
this is one i only read as recently as 2017 but it’s from a 1999 star trek fic and it’s so good
Comedic post-canon Damar/Kira fic where Damar survives and he’s Cardassia’s most popular person, and Kira is Bajor’s most popular person and for diplomatic reasons they have to play act being married on a “reality show” broadly scripted to the beats of an I Love Lucy-style sitcom where Kira poisons Damar’s dinner because he’s been taking too long negotiating a trade deal with Bajor for grain (cue laugh track), and Damar “forgets” to invite the Kai to Kira’s gratitude festival celebration because one time the Kai accused his pet riding hound of having bad breath. It’s wildly popular and people think it’s real. Meanwhile, Kira and Damar’s relationship is still as contentious as it was pre-rebellion, they have little in common and have no romantic interest in each other despite having worked together effectively during the Cardassian rebellion and being incredibly effective in their real jobs where they do work together. But the fiction of them being a happily married couple is so beloved by both Cardassians and Bajorans that they’re forced to keep up the front for the respective good of their homeworlds.

#fuck this is so funny#i think they should also attempt to have one (1) real date or something#because at a certain point they both have the thought that it would be easier if they were in some stupid relationship for real#and it goes predictably bad#ds9
You know this is a good variation. Rather than 0% romantic interest, let’s say there’s some mutual sexual chemistry, but the minute they contemplate an honest-to-goodness romantic relationship they realize they are not compatible. The 24th century version of the paparazzi spies on them during one of their dates, and of course they’re fighting because the date is Not Going Well but the Cardassian press is delighted and in the next day’s headlines they crow about how Damar and Kira still bicker like a couple of newlyweds complete with images of Kira flipping him off in two languages.
The fair people of instagram liked this one a lot so I dutifully will bring it here as well
