Now, on the subject of Ariel being willing to leave her family, aside from the baseline āthis is an abusive environment and she was not safe thereā angle I already mentioned, consider: Arielās father made it clear he would stop at nothing to crush and tear down who she was and replace it with what he wanted her to be. Now - what demographic might that resonate with? And given Ashmanās involvement, do you think that was a coincidence?
there has been scholarly discussion about the idea that the og little mermaid story, where she dies at the end, was written as a queer allegory.
so taking that into accountā¦ there is something very touching about taking this story from hans christian andersen from beyond the grave and being like āthings are different now. they get to be happy. she gets to live.ā
also in re: āEric didnāt want her until she was silent and meekā the meek partās been discussed but can we please talk about how when he first met her he thought she wasnāt the girl with the voice that he was trying to find and was disappointed, but that he slowly fell for her anyway? Heād explicitly wanted Ariel WITH her voice, but came to love her without it.
The bit about Howard Ashman being queer is finally giving me some glimmer of understanding of why the teenaged girl mermaid is named āAriel.ā Because, although the Disney movie single-handedly changed popular perception thereafter, Ariel is a boyās name. Howard Ashman absolutely knew that.
(Ariel in Shakespeareās The Tempest also has male pronouns, in case anyone was struggling to remember.)
Also, in context, even the Little Mermaids tragic ending in the original story has a bit of a beautiful meaning to me in light of a queer context.
Andersen and the stories he writes are very Christian, sometimes gratingly so (looking at you, āThe Marsh Kingās Daughterā). Whatever you feel about it, if you want to understand his intent with his stories, you need to understand that heās wanting to tell stories through a lens of Christian morals, and a sincere belief in a Christian afterlife.
In the OG story itās explicitly stated that mermaids live for 300 years, but unlike humans they do not have immortal souls, when they die itās oblivion.
In the story, if she cannot get the Prince to love her romantically by the end of the allotted time, she will die. However, her family gets the sea witch cut a deal saying that if the Little Mermaid kills the Prince before the time is up, she will be released from that deal and be allowed to live out the rest of her natural life.
She refuses to do this and accepts death. But in so doing this, she explicitly is stated to earn the equivalent of a human soul and earn eternal paradise.
The ending hits less to a more secular audience, but to me itās always held a great meeting in a queer context. Even though his love for another man was unrequited, Andersen is validating it as sacred, as holy. The mermaids atypical, non-normative love for a human, although untenable, rather than being an unnatural thing that curses her serves as the path to her redemption.
We have more rights now and can conceive of more ways of looking at queer love, we can conceive of happy endings, so it makes sense and itās right and good that the story changes with time. But it still chokes me up to imagine a faithful Hans Christian Andersen, refusing to think of his love for another man as anything less than holy.
It is entirely possible that Iām reading too much into it. But thatās what Iāve always thought.

genuinely I'm so sick of people wanting all fiction to be ethical. can we all just get a little gross with it. the point of fiction is that it's not real. we can be unethical in fiction; same goes with being perverted with fiction, being unrealistic with fiction, and being grotesque with fiction. not all fiction has to be ethical, not every character has to be ethical, and that's okay. can we stop with the puritanism. be gross. be unrealistic. be whatever. if I don't like it it's not my business as long as we're all clear that its fictional.

Canadian bilingual packaging is fun because you get to see how various slightly odd idioms end up being translated by people who don't give a shit. I just saw a tub of double chocolate chip ice cream where the English label says "death by chocolate", but the French translates literally as "chocolate until death", which has a somewhat different vibe.
#there are so many cases i see when the english packaging has a pun for a tagline #and then the french is just a poor translation EVEN THOUGH an equivalent pun can be made (via @souplover13)
Occasionally it's the other way 'round, though, and the French is clearly the original pun. There's a brand of cheese sticks at the local co-op where the English tagline on the packaging is "cheesetastic!", but the French is "fromidable", which is so much better it's faintly offensive.
Literally no reason for a guy to be over 5'7". That's just wasteful use of biomass. You had enough material to make four dudes and instead you made three. That thing is blocking an entire isle in the grocery store.
No you got the math the wrong way around. Let's say that you've got four 150 cm dudes. That's a reasonable amount, and a nice round number. Add their heights together, that's 600 cm. The same height could be used to make three 200 cm guys. What are you going to do with three giraffes that you can't fit into a normal-sized car, that you couldn't do with four compact travel-sized guys.
Fun fact: The last time I checked Gandalf's height for a shitpost, one souce stated that he is 167cm/5'6", so my height!!!! The second source I found described Gandalf is "taller than Dwarves and Hobbits, but shorter than Elves and Men."

This is a hyperbolic example but here's a more real one:
You are trying to explain the trajectory of research on trans issues, and how the informed consent model came about as a wildly successful alternative to the gatekeeping model because time and again, people with clinical experience who actually cared about their patients found that just letting trans people transition was easier and the fear that it would lead to something bad was unfounded.
The Principle Understander is shouting at you that the medicalization of trans people is inherently unjust, and even the informed consent provider is still a gatekeeper, just a more lenient one.
You are already aware of this.
You are talking to someone who, as a first priority, needs to know what the worse gatekeeping model looks like.
The person you're talking to is asking "but isn't it good to give patients more time to think before making irreversible changes?" because they didn't hear the part where you explained that asking patients about their masturbation habits has nothing to do with anyone's safety. They missed it because the Principle Understander was on a tangent about the necessity of abolishing capitalism because paying for medication is bad, which again, yes but this is really not the time or place for that.
This has the funniest name btw.
Today, i was handing out flyers about an anti trans iniitiative that's going to be on the ballot that would require that schools perform invasive exams on girls before they can play in sports. This includes genital exams.
A guy came up to me to ask about it and said, "but this is to keep boys out of girls sports, right? "
I responded with, "that's what they're saying, but all girls who want to play school sports will be subject to this law."
The man asked for a flyer and i heard him discussing it with his wife afterwards.
I don't know for sure that he's going to vote no on the initiative, but i could tell he was upset at the idea of girls being forced to go though genital examinations, so there's a chance. But if i had choosen to argue with him about the fact that trans girls are not boys, he would never have agreed with me and would have been more likely to vote yes on the iniitiative.
