I do like some (existential) terror in my romance. I think puberty for everyone is at least a little terrifying so we just come to expect that to be an aspect of exciting romance narratives as we get older, though unscary irl romances are most ideal. If you're a gay kid being gay is initially scary and if you're a straight girl having to want these people who might rather use you than think of you as a person is scary too. Het romantasy is just jacking up the scary to high high levels of potential harm and therefore (for some people) jacking up the release when the harm is neutralized. Existential terror might also be why so much gay romance includes plot conflicts about a MC being gay "for the first time" after a history of heterosexual coupling (other than the simple kink of it)-- orientation uncertainty is hackles raising. Classic straight comfort story Pride and Prejudice is about being threatened by class hierarchies. Conflict makes things sexier. It does!!! it doessssss
