“why are you getting frustrated with your characters? you write them, they can do whatever you want”
NO THEY CAN’T. this little fuckers have some psychological power over me i CANNOT MAKE THEM DO SHIT
reader: i love how (detail added on a whim) foreshadows (scene that isnt related) youre a GENIUS
me: yes. of course. i absolutely meant to do that.
Waiting for the day when AI "art" is recognized for what it is (universally cringe), and all our weird fics become premium reading because people are hungry for human authenticity after years of slop-fuelled feeds… (That day is now btw)
If you have writer's block, you need to read this
You don't need to write the story right now, but you need to write a moment.
Forget the plot, the grammar, the spelling...
It doesn't have to be good. It doesn't even have to continue from where you left off previously.
Try writing:
The scene that happens right before it all changes.
The moment before it all goes wrong.
A conversation that starts in the middle that the character's don't finish.
Dialogue they scream at themselves in the mirror, because they couldn't say it out loud to the person that needed it the most.
Write for five minutes without stopping.
Don't fix spelling. Don't reread. Don't delete. If it's messy, it's working.
And if you hate it? Well then, congratulations! You're writing again.

Things your characters can say in arguments:
“I never wanted this in the first place! You just told me I was supposed to want it!”
“You don’t know me. You know the version of me I showed around you.”
“Think of someone else for once in your life! Didn’t it ever occur to you that this is hurting me?”
“I don’t get to choose.”
“Just… go. I need to think.”
“Did you ever actually care about me?”
“Don’t you get it? I was faking it! I had to pretend to want this so I could stay alive!”
“Don’t call me a coward. You can talk shit while you’re safe inside your bubble, but I’m the one who has to deal with the consequences.”
“We were never a thing. I just… got distracted.”
“This was a mistake. You were a mistake.”
“I would rather hate you than love you.”
“I can’t do this anymore!”
“I don’t get to hide behind a pretty smile and frilly dresses! I never got a choice!”
“You never cared. If you did, you wouldn’t make me choose.”
“You know I can’t. You know I can’t, yet you still make me.”
are you still scrolling on tumblr rn?
seriously?
get back to writing. you have free time rn. get your document open and start writing. you’ll never get anywhere if you don’t do the actual work. So do it.
actually writing my book:
making Pinterest boards, playlists, and accounts for my characters:
make a family tree for your characters. my fav site is familyecho.com personally, but whatever works. just make a family tree that you can refer to.
get a fucking notebook for your wip.
it’s helpful to have a physical notebook. it can have anything - sketches of your characters, bios, plot planning, info about your characters, family trees - whatever you want.
just get a physical notebook in your space
Underused Microexpressions for Characters Hiding Something
Everyone writes about characters "not meeting Character's gaze." Let’s retire it for a minute.
• A smile that doesn’t reach the eyes • Holding eye contact a beat too long • Laughing half a second too late • Over-correcting posture when addressed • Clearing their throat before answering • Adjusting sleeves, cuffs, jewelry repeatedly • A visible swallow before speaking • Exhaling through the nose instead of responding • Looking at the exit mid-conversation • Nodding too quickly

Dramatic Confessions to Use in Writing
“I’m in love with you,” “You don’t get to tell me that. Not after what you did.”
“We can’t keep doing this,” “So stop. Leave. I dare you.”
“Do you want me to leave?” “No, I want you to make me stop loving you.”
“Do you love me?” “I don’t know how to.”
“I’m in love with you,” “Then why does it hurt so much?”
“Please don’t leave,” “Why? So we can keep pretending we’re just friends? Friends don’t do this, *name*. I can’t keep convincing myself I’m not in love with you.”
Should I do more?
Go through life wondering what your character would do in the situation that you are in.
You’ll get to know your characters better than you could otherwise.
