My name is Chema Pineda-Fernández. I am a Native American Two-Spirit Non-Binary Transgender Womyn from El Salvador. My family migrated to the US in the mid-90s’ due to the Central American refugee crisis. I studied locally at Northern Virginia Community College (Theatre Career Studies) and The National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts (Acting). I have been working as a Professional Actor and Community Arts Organizer since 2011.

I recently moved to DC to pursue work opportunities and to be in community with other Transgender people. I have seen my self-esteem improve, and I am very happy about that. I have been able to survive thanks to the generous contributions of a few accomplices of mine. Getting work is difficult, especially a job that will affirm your identity as a Transgender persyn.

I have been blessed to have consistent paid work at GALA Hispanic Theatre, which has allowed me to pay for some my expenses, and continue my community organizing.

I am the Operations Manager of Teatro La Bolsa, a collective of Latinx theater artists; and am currently organizing a June Pride Month event that is centering Latinx LGBTQIA+ Artists, Community, and Narratives. I am also acting in the Company’s upcoming production of LAS GEMELAS COSMICAS/THE COSMIC TWINS, a bilingual retelling of a Classical Maya K'iche’ tale, that will be offered at local schools and organizations.

I am the Producing Artistic Director of Teatro de la Septima Generacion / Seventh Generation Theatre, a multi- lingual and cultural, Native American theatre company that centers the narrative of Transgender and Queer Womyn, as well as Youth and Elders of all ages. I am curating the annual DC NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE THEATRE FESTIVAL this November, which will feature my play 1519: THE ARRIVAL, as well as the narratives of Queer and Trans Native Folx.

I am looking for other paid work (artistic or not artistic), but am currently unable to meet my expenses:

After food and transportation, I have been unable to pay $250 of rent, not including utilities, for February. My monthly rent is average $550, with utilities averaging an additional $80. I have secured housing for March, but have to pay as soon as possible. I receive my next paycheck of $250 on March 9.

Any amount that you can contribute would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

cuando tú estás hablando, usa “elle”. i.e: “elle es muy simpátique” (yo cambié “a” y “o” para “e” para la neutralidad de genero) pero, la mayoría de personas no sabré eso…… ay, tal vez…. cambia entre “a” y “o” para adjectivos? no sé.

cuando tú estás escribiendo, usa “ellx” y cambia “a” y “o” in adjectivos y sustantivos con “x”. i.e: “ellx es muy malx”

We didn’t have a word for our, as you guys call, gay/lesbian people. So we coined that word as an umbrella for all our tribes. We never said, “Well, you’re transgender. You’re bisexual. You’re lesbian.” We never knew those terms. Those are all from Western culture, you know, LGBTQ and all that. So on some level, it’s about getting rid of labels. Those terms were forced upon us.
