smoked the weed that gives you gothic madness and now i'm on the fucking moors again wearing nothing but a flimsy shift 😑
Unless you were a tech at NASA back in the day, when one time some hydrogen a) escaped in a particular building, and b) caught on fire. This was extremely difficult because hydrogen does NOT burn on the visible spectrum humans evolved to see (and flee). Rather, it technically does, but it’s so pale that in practice, no one could see it. Additionally, pure hydrogen burns without smoke and with so little ambient heat that you can’t really sense it till you walk into it. So, per the lore, for a few days all the techs in that building just walked around brandishing brooms in front of them like lances. If your broom lit on fire, congrats! You have located more burning hydrogen! Do not proceed!
oh my god it's real and it was LITERALLY called "the broom method" holy shit
This is also a thing for high pressure steam systems.
See, the steam you probably think of is what engineers call "wet steam" steam that still contains liquid water, making it appear white. In a steam engine, you don't want wet steam, you want dry steam, which is steam that contains no liquid water. Pure water vapor.
Pure water vapor is colorless and odorless, and by the end of WWII in steam engines, coming through the pipes at 300+ PSI, enough to cut off limbs when there were pinhole leaks. So the crew would basically form conga lines, and the guy at the front would wave his broom in front of them. If the broom got a close shave, you knew you didn't want to go that way.
Once you'd located a leak, it could be patched, but you often didn't know where the leak was. You just saw a drop in pressure on one of the gauges. Other times, leaks would be small enough you wouldn't know there was one until one of your crew was down a couple fingers.
Brooms are just the IRL equivalent of a 10 foot pole in D&D
Tw: burn wounds mention
Fun fact! Methanol also produces invisible flames!
Also fun fact: In 1981, an Indie 500 pit crew were all doused in Methanol during a pit stop, and almost all caught fire soon after!
Most of them managed to be put out, but some had some nasty burns all across their body.
The worst part is that some people were on fire, yelling to be put out, and nobody realized.
Shit’s nasty
Also makes me think of "The Damned Thing" (1893), a short story by Ambrose Bierce about a predatory creature that reflects light only in a wavelength we cannot see, rendering it invisible.
I’m convinced if ppl on this site knew how crappy gifs look before you color them properly, they would appreciate editors more
for context reasons, this is how a gif I used in a recent gifset looks like without any adjustments/coloring whatsoever:
and here it is afterwards:
I truly don’t think people realize how dingy and dark most movies and tv shows actually are so they can’t appreciate the work and skill it takes to make gifs look the way your brain “remembers” it looking.
Another before and after example:
This gif needed 6 different adjustment layers, not including the sharpening process, which is its own separate challenge. The blue window was also changed to green to keep the palette more consistent and to reduce the range of colors needed, because a wider range of colors generally results in worse gif quality since gifs only support a max of 256 (compared to the millions your monitor can display).
yeah…
I was already going to reblog this because gifmakers need all the love, but the little lambie made sure that I was definitely going to do it.
dark scenes are truly the bane of every gifmaker’s soul
The ecosystem of tumblr fandom relies on gif makers - put some respect on their names!!
In 1997, local television in Kharkiv accidentally filmed one of the most iconic rave moments in history.
Good friends to have around the property.
I love reblogging gay porn at 7 in the morning… it makes me feel like a rebel, which makes me feel dangerous, which makes me feel like a brunette.

as a writer you will have a specific deck of vocab words you like using a lot and when you read other peoples' work you will see a very clear spread of different vocab words on their end. this is why you need to read, to collect other writers' words like it's a card game
