The 2026 Gender Census is now open!

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.

It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!

It's been a little bit over one day, and there have been over 5,500 responses so far, entering almost 10,000 names!

I love that you can see how well the mailing list is coming along, with that huge jump in participation when I sent out the mailing list email. There are well over 13,000 subscribers now, and it is really vital for getting the word out to people who aren't social media superusers.

The last name survey was 5,179 responses, so this is all going really well. :)

As always, Tumblr are so good at this that we need shares everywhere else for a bit of balance, so if you are able to share this on Tumblr and especially elsewhere it will improve the data! There's a list of sharing links on the public incoming stats spreadsheet, but I'll paste it over here too:

This is Doris Pollas, the cofounder of the organisation now known as lgbt+ Denmark which by being founded in 1948 is one of the oldest ongoing queer organisation in the world.

Doris lived in a farm in Jutland as a child. She was always butch and figured out she was a lesbian in her teens. When she heard about a club in copenhagen where boys kissed boys and girls kissed girls she went just some months after and it was through that club she started a paper connecting queer people all up to seventies and co founded lgbt+ Denmark.

She is now 97 years old and wishes for every queer person to have an as loving and accepting family as she did.

I don’t see a lot of older gays from my country, so learning about Doris, a masc lesbian, was really nice.

Edit of the variety that I always have to add to posts like these, apparently: This is a post about real-life aromantics and real-life asexuals, not fictional characters. "Aromantics can still date" and "asexuals can still have sex" are things that real aromantics and asexuals get told all the time, regardless of whether we've expressed a desire not to have these things. If your first thought seeing this post was "ah, this must be about shipping a-spec characters," then please reread it again with the knowledge that it's actually about a topic that directly impacts real a-specs in real life. The Food and Drug Administration is warning the public to not feed dogs Raaw Energy dog food because samples have shown contamination with multiple pathogens that are dangerous to both people and pets. The FDA requested the company recall its implicated products, but the company has not done so. The implicated dog food has tested positive for one or more of the following bacteria: Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, E. coli O157 and Campylobacter jejuni.

Frozen dog food is contaminated with bacteria that can kill your dog if you feed it to them. And the company refuses to recall their product.

They don't use lot numbers, only manufacture dates. If you have any of these Raaw Energy products in your freezer, with these date codes, throw it out:
