we need to invent a way to explain how deep running and pervasive and subliminal racism and antiblackness is without immediately sounding like an insane conspiracy theorist
female characters are always lighter than male characters. strong characters are almost always dark. aggressive characters are almost always dark. peaceful and intelligent characters are almost always light. even amongst darker characters the lightest one is usually either the leader or the girls. dark is evil and light is good.
if you try to explain this to a white person they look at you like youre insane
briefly pursuing a career in animation radicalized me on this. So many stories from the industry about how you have to start with your character design as dark as possible, because INEVITABLY you'll get "notes" from higher-ups asking you to make them lighter.
In a class about making a pitch bible my teacher once role-played as a shitty executive with a classmate, pressing them in intentionally abrasive ways about why they made their characters diverse. He emphasized that we had to learn to defend these things, because the racism in the industry is extremely deliberate.
Ronald Wimberly's comic essay, Lighten Up, stays evergreen
I would argue that the two most perfect critiques of Harry Potter come from a pair of 4chan posts, which take opposite approaches to their critique but reach equally damning conclusions
The bird app has a lot of garbage but this thread really tickled me this morning:
Bonus:
call me a dirty communist radical but I think everyone should know if they live near toxic waste
if youre in the united states and would like to learn new and terrible things about where you live, you can visit the EPA's Environmental Justice Screening map and put in your location or zipcode
click on superfund proximity to see how close you are to a superfund site (location contaminated with hazardous material)
heres Niagra Falls NY! google love canal!
its a good tool to see what environmental factors could be harming your health that you may not know about. this is not limited to toxic waste so look around at it
my favorite is looking at roads. there are some interesting correlations. Here is a map of Buffalo NY with traffic proximity
here it is again but with where people are getting asthma :P
crazy
heres where the people of color live in Buffalo btw
in case you where wondering what the explanatory factor here is, its the 6-lane expressway that they ran through a residential community in the 50s. a redlined neighborhood btw. the road used to be beautiful parkway. thank you Urban Renewal, thank you Robert Moses, and thank you Kensington Expressway
ok heres the link again because now you really want to go look at it lol
anyways yeah um environmental health issues are super insidious and not talked about enough. i know thinks seem daunting and scary when we talk about environmental problems, things like climate change are huge and all-encompassing. The way you can make the most impact, real tangible impact is by learning about things local to you!!!!
learn about them, talk to other people about them, organize or find a way to get involved with orgs that already exist. grassroots activism is infinitely more effective than they want you to know and its your responsibility to yourself and your neighbors to try to make things better good luck I love you all
One day I showed up to D&D and one of the guys in our group, before we could even start playing, was like "guys, look at this thing I found." And pulled up either this exact map or a very similar one that cross checks environmental hazards from industrial facilities with average income (more detailed than by zip code, it was pretty cool). And we use a big TV embedded in the game table for maps and stuff, which he pulled this up on, so we spent like half an hour looking at where we all lived and going "oh. Shit." And then we sat there a bit kind of ambling through some cool down small talk.
And like, the thing that kind of made it real for everyone was the context of it being on the screen we use to look at world maps for a fantasy game. It was very surreal for some of the guys at the table, the more conservative ones in particular, like they could see the map and it was showing them the forces of Mordor marching to their doorstep. And for a short time they understood that there are actually vast and evil forces in this world that they could defeat with a weapon, they were just large corporations commiting environmental crimes with very well protected CEOs and fantastic lawyers.
check out your location while you can!!! Part of Trumps immediate changrs includes getting rid of public information sources like this one. I don't know if they will keep this website up for much longer so go on and download any reports or pollution information you might want
so as of today, February 5th 2025 this website is down. This is coinciding with mass censorship of other government agencies online from the Trump administration. Those who were able to download their data before the removal, keep it and learn it and share it with your peers. Those who did not get the chance, know that there are other avenues and follow them. Information is power and they are trying to take it away from you. Do not let them.
here are some other mapping resources from the notes. this is not everything, but it is a start.
Check the quality of your tap water here:https://www.ewg.org/tapwater/
Check your climate vulnerability here: https://climatevulnerabilityindex.org/
explore historical redlining maps here: https://dsl.richmond.edu/panorama/redlining
this is just the wikipedia page of current superfund sites, take a look and see where your state has hazardous waste sites.
look into the history of your area and TALK ABOUT IT. be annoying and loud about it. don't stop learning and don't stop talking.
update! here is a clone of the website, thank you @boots-fastened-slip-fashion for linking this in the replies I'm putting it here so it can be accessed along with the other sites :)
hey! if you're in the notes worrying about how the website is down, you should be rbing this version, which has a replica of the site and a bunch of other resources!!!
We've lost a lot to the onslaught of enshittification but I can think of none more brazen than Discord getting rid of the send button
Oh, you've typed a message? You've typed a message? Would you like to add a sticker (server stickers available with Nitro Boosts(TM).) Would you like to add an emoji (more custom emojis available with Nitro(TM).) Would you like to send a gift (gift your friend Nitro(TM) for only $9.99 a month.) Would you like to add an app (more apps available in the Nitro Store(TM).)
They got rid of the send message button. On the send messages to my friends app. In order to make room for a 5th button that sells you something. The parody is too bold people will roll their eyes you have to scale it back.
I would like to gently point out that the send button can be enabled or disabled under accessibility,
Also, if you're someone who'd like to customize your discord further, or remove nitro garbage or bypass it, better discord (an open source project) can be used on desktop for a lot of fun results:
BetterDiscord extends the functionality of DiscordApp by enhancing it with new features.
Plugin options can entirely replicate nitro stuff, and enhance privacy, such as:
Remove annoying buttons like the Gift button from the chat box.
"Fuck those buttons"
Enhanced version of silent typing.
"Hey maybe I don't want you to know when I'm typing"
Allows you to enter larger Messages, which will automatically split into several smaller Messages
"Fuck the character limit"
Adds extra Controls to the Friends Page, for example sort by Name/Status, Search and All/Request/Blocked Amount
"Can I see my friends in a normal manner please"
Improves your whole experience using Discord. Adds highly customizable switching animations between guilds, channels, etc. Introduces smooth
"I would like navigating discord to be like a powerpoint please"
And many other features that range from helpful to profoundly useless but fun.
Enshittification sucks, but the first step to undoing it is taking control of your experiences and helping others do the same. So hopefully this helps a little?
So anyways with the rapid rise of fascism I feel it’s a good time to point out that it’s perfectly legal to follow unjust orders slowly, badly, or inefficiently
Breaking the law, even an unjust law, has consequences that not all can afford. But also a very large number of us are also very stupid, or very confused, or very lazy, and so it’s not unreasonable that someone at the bottom of the chain of command might make a typo, or misplace some paperwork, or leave a Friday afternoon email for Monday morning.
When something goes wrong, or an operation slows down, because a low-level worker somewhere sent a package to the wrong address or left someone on hold for an hour or didn’t fill out a particular form correctly- Do you immediately assume malicious intent? Or do you usually just brush it off as some underpaid idiot being bad at their job?
You also gotta not brag about it. Keep your political opinions on the down low. Be noncommittal or ignorant or undecided. Say things like “I’ve never heard of that”, “where did you hear that?” or “that’s interesting, I heard a conflicting story from here, how weird”. Never be outwardly confidant of what you know. When there is a silence, don’t fill it- leave the space and let the other fill it for you. That’s how you get information, that’s how you find sources, that’s how you reduce the value of anything others get out of you.
Virtue signalling by wearing pins and ribbons and loudly declaring your place is not safe in some environments. It will place scrutiny on you and everything you touch. Nobody believes the guy who says “fuck my boss and everything he stands for” scratches the boss’s car by accident, even if it is an accident.
If you want to slow the march of a tank, filling the path with mud is going do more than laying down in front of it.
My favourite part about writing fanfic: No killing my darlings. I'm already here for fanatic indulgence. Who gives a shit if the pacing or narrative structure would be better without this scene? The unnecessary scene is what I'm here for.
i went to the SCP website
this shouldn’t be so funny to me
we’re so fucked
what you learn from hobbies:
consistent practice opens up whole worlds of skill that you couldn't imagine
making mistakes in the process of learning is not only natural, it is also essential
activities that you enjoy can give you more energy back than you spent on them
wow everything is so expensive
my hands hurt
ykno the thing about poetry is that 99% of it is bullshit and the other 1% will cut you like a material knife, and for every person that 1% is a different section of the whole. this is probably true about all art.
@sashayed these tags feeling pretty materially knifey for me

Concept: Baba Yaga house walking around on chicken legs, being followed by one of those plastic Fisher-Price play houses on baby chick legs
Still love this concept. Here’s a redraw that was NOT sketched in 15min while waiting in line at the DMV
In the Russian fairytale fantasy film The Last Warrior: Root of Evil (Последний богатырь: Корень зла, 2015) the two cottages have eggs that hatch to reveal their offsprings: little cottages. Do with that information what you want…..
For people who have ever wondered “why in the world would anybody imagine a house on legs” or thought “they must have been drunk when they came up with the idea” let me introduce you to a very typical storehouse used across Scandinavia and into Slavic areas:
This type was used mostly by the Sámi, the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula. They’re mostly nomadic, and would build these storehouses (Áittit) up off the ground so that bears and wolves couldn’t get into them while they were elsewhere.
Other groups in Scandinavia and Russia also used elevated storerooms; the Norwegian word for them is “stabbur.” Norwegian ones are still elevated off the ground but are often not as high (because they lived right next to it year round) and often had walls around the legs so you could store non-food items that animals wouldn’t care about in a weather-proof room.
You get a similar thing on Komodo. Because of the dragons.
I read somewhere, if I remember right, that Baba Yaga’s house was like that because a very old kind of coffin was up on stilts too. But maybe it’s to avoid dragons and other scavengers instead. I guess even Baba wouldn’t want to be raided by a bear either
autocorrect just tried to change "omegaverse" to "metaverse" and i think i'm genuinely offended

Story time: In which my coworkers thought I was cheating on my partner…with my partner
Ok so B and I are very tactile people. We mostly work from home, spend 90% of our days together, and touch each other all the time in a deeply habitual way.
We also work in the same industry, which means sometimes we go to the same in-person trainings/conferences/events.
We were at one such event yesterday and while a couple folks in attendance knew we were married to each other, most did not. Though, importantly, they did know that we each were married. We both wear rings. We regularly mention our spouses.
So, we arrived together and walked holding hands through the parking lot and, yes, had a smooch while alone in the elevator before we had to be on our professional best behavior (he was wearing a suit, kissing was unavoidable).
When the doors opened we were still a bit close together and got some looks. But I didn’t really clock them until later. We also checked in with each other a couple times through the evening and stepped out for a quiet moment here and there, which some people likely noticed.
So toward the end of the night, I was chatting with some peers and B came to stand next to me with some of his peers and without thinking I reached over to pull a bit of debris out of his hair and without pausing in his conversation, he reached over to squeeze the back of my neck and run his knuckles down my shoulder/arm in thanks.
There was a sudden lull in the conversation and I realized multiple people were looking at us with obvious discomfort. I rewound the last few seconds, considered some earlier indicators, and then hastily said, “we’re married! To each other! He’s my partner!”
And everyone let out a relieved exhale, had a laugh about it, and we continued on.
Whoops.
My parents worked in the same building but different divisions of a major tech firm back in the day. This exact scenario happened to them at least twice a year.
The REALLY funny one was that my mom decided to take illustration classes with me at the Denver Botanical Gardens while I was getting my master's of illustration there.
Now, I look more like my Dad's side of the family but despite having the same surname, arriving and leaving together, sitting next to each other, and me calling her "Mom" multiple times per class, it somehow took one of my professors three years and seeing us share a plate of fries to realize we might be related.
The way she decided to broach the subject though, was to wait until she and my mom were alone in a quiet corner and gently ask "So how long has [Gallus] been your daughter?"
...Thing is,
I'd come out to my family as Nonbinary to my family earlier that week and gave them permission to bring friends and acquaintances up to speed and my mom was DETERMINED that nobody misgender me so what she replied was "No, [Gallus] isn't my daughter anymore-"
A few minutes later I came back from the bathroom to find my mom and my professor talking in circles around each other, because my mom was trying to recount the story of how I came out and my professor growing increasingly horrified and confused until my mom gave up and waved me over.
"I'm sorry [Gallus], can you explain the Nonbinary thing? I think I'm messing it up." She sighs.
"Oh, sure- This is my mother, I am her genetic and legal offspring, but I'm not her daughter because I don't have a gender. I'm her kid." I explain.
"OH THANK GOD!" My professor gasped. "I thought you'd been disowned!"
