Kevin's collar has queen on it (naturally) and he follows all the rules and likes to sit delicately on a cushion and put his head in Andrew's lap when allowed. He loves to perform tricks for praise and the rare times Kevin brats (Pre-planned, I think acting out + being punished can go sideways fairly easily for him) it's breaking commands or giving into Neil messing with him.

I think he loves his collar being held and the feeling of the weight on his neck. He can also choose to take it off whenever he wants and even do scenes without it.

Neil's collar has "Neil" on it since that name is already as close to a pet name as they get. He is also a brat lol. He loves twisting Andrew's instructions around (sitting on the couch over the floor) or messing with Kevin who is trying really hard to be a good girl. Andrew will turn his back for a second and Neil will be grinding against Kevin or making out with him. Andrew has to rip them apart by the collars before snapping, "Heel."

They both get something different out of submitting; for Kevin it turns his brain off. He can act out or be praised without guilt or spiraling. He can submit and be called a good girl and have Andrew pet his hair. For Neil, it is being given structure without fear and being "owned" without feeling choked by it. I can also see him versing and giving Kevin impossible tasks to embarrass him.

And for Andrew it is way to engage with sex without being body dependent or even dependent solely on him. I think realistically he drops fairly often (just a part of their sex life, it is not a bad thing or means they failed) but having praise / control be a center of it helps.

I also think aftercare, once they have words for it and understand what it is, helps a lot. Taking care of his partners, checking their throats / wrists, and even cleaning and putting away toys all help signify sex / the scene is over. Almost meditative. It helps with the transition from owner to Andrew again.

one of the things i enjoy most about the aftg books is andrew’s speech patterns, but specifically when you look at the rest of the characters.

because i think right now many books are being published with unrealistic dialogue, fantasy books are the biggest offenders on this but its sort of all over the place. its just twenty something characters acting like overlords or villains with formal vocabulary and overly forced banter.

and the truth is Nora could have written it like that, made every one of these ratty college kids speak in riddles or like royalty for no fucking reason; but it would take you out of the story immediately.

and yet she did it for andrew. so when you hear him speak like a freak, in a context where nobody else does, you dont think oh this is unrealistic, your brain just goes ohhh that’s a theater kid or an autistic kid or an autistic theater kid DUH of courseeee

I think my favorite way to combat the white savior trope with bloodymary while still acknowledging that yes, Grace IS gonna have to do some saving and deconstructing (Simon DID just get out of the worst week of his life and that’s not even mentioning the death cult of it all) is to have Grace just be some guy roommate.

Like, the eridians did all the work. They found the sub however they did, they used the knowledge they had bringing Grace back from the brink of death to do the same with Simon. Grace is only there for fact checking and asking “hey, we don’t have the budget or space to make a whole new enclosure, mind if we stick this guy in there with you???”

My second favorite way is having Simon appear while Grace is in that “starving to death and dying from every disease imaginable” point and the eridians are taking care of BOTH of them, but that also makes me want to die with them.

simon who's used to living in tight quarters with other people (at least in prison if not on eden) and therefore sees nothing wrong with being naked/changing/etc. around others vs. grace who turns eight shades of red and almost passes out every time simon casually starts stripping around him

or

grace who's used to being the only human being around for lightyears and living with creatures that can see through his clothes anyways vs. simon who was raised in a prudish cult where it was considered borderline pornographic to show anything but your face and hands suddenly having to deal with grace being in various stages of undress at random times
