At face value, this is a ridiculous headline. But the article then says his managers berated and insulted him for leaving the party after an anxiety attack, and the company then fired him for taking days off work for “unsafe work practices,” due to having anxiety?
There’s so much more to it as well. He repeatedly asked the company not to throw a party for him due to his anxiety (apparently this is standard practise for their office and he knew it would be triggering for him) and they “forgot” about his request. On the day in question, he predictably had a panic attack and went to his car to do breathing exercises.
The next day he was called into a meeting where he was insulted and grilled about “ruining the party” and “stealing his co-workers’ joy”, which caused him to have another panic attack and start doing coping behaviours like hugging himself, at which point his employers decided he must be angry and was going to turn violent. They then suspended him for days and later told him he’d been fired.
So yeah, it’s not over an “unwanted birthday party”, it’s over employers repeatedly failing to accommodate someone’s disability, trying to frame them as the villain for having accessibility needs, and firing them for not conforming to some stupid office politics.
I am completely pro-lawsuit. Lawsuits are often the only tool that otherwise powerless individuals have to demand some accountability from large corporations and institutions, and historically lawsuits have been a very important tool for civil rights, women’s rights, LGBT+ rights, and disability rights. But this is exactly why the media is always depicting lawsuits as something frivolous and silly that only uptight spoiled crybabies who want easy money do, and people just eat up that propaganda without doing any research or critical thinking.

this year's prompts were sourced through an open suggestion form, where over 6,000 prompts were submitted. after, the best 100 prompts were voted on in a poll which received 6,265 votes. the top 28 were rearranged into the 28 prompts of febuwhump - with the most voted prompt in the number 1 position ("I like you better broken", 1,959 votes) - while the alternate prompts were selected from the mod's personal favourites of the remaining options.
this is such a great list of prompts, and i'm so excited to see what creativity they spark with you!

I'm still rereading the Scholomance trilogy. I just finished book 2.
It's clear to everyone (both readers and characters) that this relatively happy ending does not happen without El. It does not happen without Orion. You need both of those extremely oddball talents throwing their overpowered oddball all into the solution to make it work.
It also doesn't work without the general cooperation of the student body. The Scholomance itself agreed with me on this in its extremely unsubtle way -- if you don't help, you don't get dinner.
What I think is slightly less clear is that Liesel is also essential. She's a pushy hypercompetent incredibly motivated project manager. She's also fantastic at goal-based manipulation of individuals and groups.
Their plan was to get thousands of largely-traumatized teenagers, who had been working towards a terrifying event that they expected to kill most of them, to go through a brand-new reworked version of that event. With tight timelines and brand-new custom-designed equipment and irreplaceable personnel (El, Orion, and to some extent Liu). Hell, it wouldn't be hard to mess it up in a way that would kill people due to crowd crushing, especially since there is only one set of doors. And until a few months before this event, the students were in a system where they could not afford to generally cooperate. Even if we take El's view on things with a large grain of salt, a lot of the kids felt that they had to make bargains about things like a half-burnt blanket or some crackers. The Scholomance culture was penny-pinching and wary when it comes to cooperation.
Liesel's organization in the months leading up to graduation and her handling of the situation when Myrthe tried to pooh-pooh everyone out of cooperation at the last minute were both critical to things working at all, let alone working as well as they did. IIRC, other than Orion[*], they lost one kid to a naga and one kid got badly injured by a mawmouth. That's less than 0.1%.
