There is a quality of books (or movies or shows) that I can best describe as “stickiness,” which is separate from being good or even enjoyable: a sticky book is one I just keep thinking about. Sometimes it’s because a book is very good (e.g. The Locked Tomb), and sometimes it’s because a book is very bad (e.g. ACOTAR), but there are also very good and very bad books that are slippery, such that when I’m done reading them they slip from my thoughts like water from a hydrophobic surface.

#THIS #ITS SO WEIRD #i feel that way about tamora pierce #i went on a tamora pierce binge a couple years ago I must have read 15+ books #i remember they absolutely delighted me at the time but now i have. zero recollection #or inclination to reread #it's bizarre #same with a lot of ELIZABETH WEIN her books are easily some of my favorites EVER which i do not say lightly #and every once in a while i'll crack one open to reread and I'll be like holy SHIT this woman's writing is AMAZING #and the rest of the time I'm like....... ma'am does epistolary/unreliable narrator spectacularly #like structurally her novels are phenomenal but eh the writing doesn't jump out at me?#then i'll reread and lose my mind over every other sentence again

The most interesting thing about your character is not their wound. It's what they built on top of the wound to survive it.

The wound is backstory. The structure they built on top , the habits, the walls, the jokes they make to change the subject, the way they leave before they can be left, that's character. So don't show me the wound. Show me the architecture.

The reader will figure out what's underneath. That's the part that makes them feel clever. Let them have it.
