So finally starting the main series. Same deal as akotsk but the commentary will chapter by chapter rather than book by book. I’m sorry but these are too long for that.
So Gared is past fifty and has been a member of the Night’s Watch for forty years, “man and boy.” How old was he went he joined?
And one of the rangers is 18. This will surely end well for him.

Maester Aemon mention. I cannot wait to actually meet him (the fact Egg had an on page interaction with Bloodraven before Aemon is a crime).
I like how the Wall is described as weeping when it melts.
“Will could feel it. Four years in the Night’s Watch, and he had never been so afraid. What was it?”
Boy, you do not want to know.
“I am not going back to Castle Black a failure on my first ranging.”
I guess technically he doesn’t go back.
“A shadow emerged from the dark of the woods. It stood in front of Royce. Tall, it was, and gaunt and hard as old bones, with flesh pale as milk. Its armor seemed to change color as it moved; here it was white as new-fallen snow, there black as shadow, everywhere dappled with the deep grey-green of the trees. The patterns ran like moonlight on water with every step it took.”
“Lying dead like that, you saw how young [Royce] was. A boy.”
How many more times will I be seeing that sentiment. I feel it’ll come up a lot.
“This was the first time he had been deemed old enough to go with his lord father and his brothers to see the king’s justice done.[…] the seventh year of Bran’s life.”

I wanna hear Old Nan’s stories. They sound fun.
“He had taken off his Father’s face, Bran thought, and donned the face of Lord Stark of Winterfell.”
Idk why but I love all the mentions of Ned’s “lord face”.
Not Theon just kicking the head away.
And Jon immediately calling him an ass.
“Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?”
“That is the only time a man can be brave.”
No notes. I just really like that exchange.
“If you would take a man’s life, you owe it to him to look int his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die.”
I know that when something is adapted some things will have to be cut or altered for one reason or another, however I really wish that part had been kept in the show.
Also I like how Ned’s feelings about this kind of extend from not just being about duty but also the value of human life. Taking another person’s life is a serious thing and he treats it as such.
I forget just how big direwolves are meant to be until moments like this where Bran says a grown one is bigger than a pony.
So far loving Jon and Theon animosity have towards one another.
Ned, listen to Jory. It’ll be better for everyone if you do.
This is probably just because I know how this goes, but seriously how can people read this scene and then be surprised that Ned dies? Like it’s straightforward, especially with the next chapter.
If only. Poor, poor Lady and Greywind.
Also I like Ned being like ‘the children must train and care for the wolves all on their own’ knowing that one of said children is a toddler.
Also I prefer Jon actively claiming Ghost for himself.
