“History” Look - These coloured marks and scratches, that were years in the making, Always unplanned and unannounced choices: surreal or subliminal. Fabricated by once the child painter at the oak table, Who worked on wood to paper, on canvas to the surface of another. Who performed and had written, From morn till night, the dawn till dusk, Novel histories in the making. The palette knives, paper cutter, pointed pens, paintbrush and palette, Tools of the teenage painter, Instrumental to experimenting, conforming compositions and shaping, decoding the corroding, crude forms. Thusly, announcing the painter’s sharp intent to hold and feel, And to pass judgment on the textures of things that be later abided and glued to painter’s plan or prepared design. History was in the making. Look - These pigments laid out in anarchy across the table, Layered upon by year after year. See the table aging and colouring, The adult painter, alas, grown and maturing. Comprehending slowly, from ages 7 to 20, That histories in the making, Arrive defunct, derived deceased,And in debris. A definitive memory, Forgotten by all but the painter. The last brush stroke on the table, The final chronicle. And a new oak structure. As the start to another. ______________ When I was younger I had the same wooden table in my room where I would make all my art. I would use a palette but later preferred the wider surface of the table where I could spread my paints out more easily. I no longer bothered cleaning it as the paint eventually came to dry. Over the years, all the colours or “history” of art making on this table accumulated to what it looks like now in these photos. Sadly, I’ve recently had to throw this table away. Before disposing of it though, I took a final look at how the layers of paint and colours unintentionally placed throughout time rendered the table a somewhat probable piece of art in itself (?).
