Look when someone is in a confused or compromised state, no matter why,

and they are your medical charge,

it is vital to continue to treat them with dignity. Like that. Reassure them with visible practicalities that you acknowledge their fears, will not belittle them, and can show them facts to help them cope.

THAT is the proper compassion of a Healer.

Can I just add that, if you like me have delusions where everything bad that happens is your fault, the doctor shouldn't be like "Yeah, you're probably right" but try to reason with you in a respective way. OP's doctor did it right, but some of the notes make it look like people think delusions must be agreed to always, when doing so can be detrimental to the person's wellbeing

This is my favorite addition to this post because it’s true. When dealing with delusions you need to avoid the extremes - DO NOT tell the person flat out “you’re wrong”, “thats not real” or worst of all “you’re crazy.” BUT DON’T ENCOURAGE THE DELUSION EITHER! Let’s take my werewolf delusion, for example. Doctors who have flat out told me “that isn’t real” haven’t helped because for me it is real and no amount of you saying it isn’t will change my perception. It makes us feel alienated.

But someone saying “You ARE transforming into a werewolf but i have a poition thatll stop it! :D” is just as dangerous because you’re furthering a delusion which could get someone hurt. its also manipulative. we’re psychotic, not children.

So what DO you do? Acknowledge that the situation is frightening. If possible, give them the objective facts (ie, i don’t see any monsters; your mom hasn’t said anything to make it seem like she’s going to kill you) while also acknowledging that for them, it is real. Most of all, ask what you can do to keep them comfortable and safe.

Sorry for the long addition but when I made this post it didn’t occur to me apsychotic people would look at it for advice on how to handle an actively delusional person. I’m glad it’s resonating with people, though

I remember when I told a doctor someone had replaced all the veins and arteries in my body with wires and I was no longer a person. she very gently checked me over for any wounds where they could have made the incisions to put the wires in, and took photos of the places on my phone to prove it. all the places I felt were the entry points were out of my sight, behind my ears and in my back and stuff. then she offered to get me an xray if they could fit me in, but it might take a while. I declined because I didnt want to take up space for people who need it, and honestly at this point I trusted her enough to tell me if I had wires. she brought my husband in and showed him how to check me over for wounds and wires, then she asked me if I had any questions. I went back into the waiting room, feeling like I wasn't stupid and I felt much safer.

she came into the waiting room later to check if I was okay, and I felt safe, cared for, trusted and believed. she told my husband she put a psychiatrist on standby in case I got freaked out again, and told me she understands how I feel, and that she can't see anything but she gets how scary it is for me and she's on shift for a few hours and to ask for her by name if I need reassuring again.

I felt safe. I felt believed. that's how you do it.

I was panicking about this to my girlfriend, and she said the most helpful thing, that I felt should have been obvious to me, but I needed to hear it from someone else.

Today I listened to the Rent cast album for the first time in… a number of years, and it sure does hit differently now that I’m an adult and not an extremely sheltered suburban tween.

(the first time I heard any of the songs was at Jewish sleepaway camp in the Poconos. yes, really. we sang it on hikes. the girl who actually owned the cast album was in a different bunk, so I exclusively heard the ‘as sung by 12-14 year old girls’ version until I got home. yes, the lyrics were bowdlerized)

anyway! some notes:

Mark’s mom is still very funny and her voicemail is, perhaps, the most realistic thing in this musical.

I was definitely well into my 20s before I noticed that a Tom Collins is also a cocktail? whoops

wow but Benny looks different to me that he did when I was younger. like. the things his friends are mad at him for are Very Different from the things he does that are actually bad?

actually let me break this down.

Things Benny’s Friends Are Mad At Him For:

leaving them behind to marry a bougie lady

gentrification

‘stealing’ Mimi from Roger

Things Benny Does That Are Genuinely Bad:

cheats on his wife with a 19-year-old HIV+ heroin addict

okay, yeah, gentrification, I’ll grant you that

Things Benny Does That Are Good, Actually:

lets his friends live in the building he owns rent-free for a year

pays for Mimi’s rehab

left what must have been an absolute nightmare of a living situation, to marry a bougie lady

seriously can you imagine what that apartment was like

an unheated squat occupied by Benny, Mark, Roger, Collins, and Maureen? nope, no thank you

also Roger has only been clean for six months at the start of the musical, so he was still a full-blown heroin addict when Benny left

actually I would bet that the sequence of events went: April kills herself (IN THEIR BATHROOM) -> Roger spirals even further -> Benny gets the fuck out of there

I don’t love that they make the same “Maureen is a lesbian now, lol” joke twice in the space of like five minutes

the timeline of “Maureen dumps Mark, keeps him as her production manager for a month, then replaces him two days before her show” is… bad. Mark, you have a noodle for a spine.

Joanne’s parents’ voicemail: also still funny. “and wear a bra!” is perfect.

btw Joanne and Mark are both clearly slumming so idk why it’s only bad when Benny does it

hey it’s actually very fucked up that Angel killed Benny’s dog???

not sure when I first noticed this, but Mark, Roger and Collins all use he/him pronouns for Angel, and Mimi, Joanne and Maureen use she/her. huh.

“I’ll Cover You” is still extremely good.

Collins and Joanne are the only adults in this musical.

“Over the Moon” is a perfect parody of bad performance art, so props for that

oh good, “La Vie Boheme” still slaps

I have a lot more sympathy for the Life Cafe waitstaff than I used to, though

btw please envision 13-year-old me, on a hike in the Pennsylvania woods, with 20 other 13-year-olds who are all word-perfect on “La Vie Boheme” but definitely don’t know what a dildo is and kind of mumble their way through the swears.

god I loved “Take Me Or Leave Me” so much as a kid but WOW Maureen would be a nightmare to date IRL

tbh everyone except Collins and Angel should just like. be single for a while. take some time to work on themselves.

you know what, my decision to skip “Contact” on most play-throughs was both correct and, in retrospect, a Big Ace Mood

unsurprisingly, the reprise of “I’ll Cover You” still makes me tear up.

“What You Own” isn’t bad, as such, but it does make me roll my eyes at both Mark and Roger. Especially Mark. my dude, you have by far the fewest problems of any of your friends, and you need to take it down a notch.

the little moment where Mark corrects “Muffy” to “Alison” is really interesting to me? the implication is that they know her well enough now to feel bad about the nickname. I choose to believe that Alison is actually way too good for Benny and his friends all come to recognize that.

aw, Roger. “Your Eyes” is very heartfelt. it’s not good, but it’s heartfelt.

I still like the finale a lot, but boy, these kids have a LOT of problems, huh.

hm apparently I have extensive opinions about what would happen to the characters over the next 25 years.

okay just right off the bat: I doubt that Mimi lives more than a year. sorry! but her odds are Not Good

I would like to think that Roger makes it a little longer than Mimi – at least long enough to record an album

Maureen has joined a cult at least once and has almost no contact with her friends from her New York days

Mark has never made a commercially successful film

he still lives in New York, though

mostly because the royalties from Roger’s lone album let him buy into a co-op before he could get priced out of Manhattan

some of his old footage has made its way into various documentaries, most recently on Netflix

in his free time he volunteers at an after-school program where he teaches filmmaking to at-risk youth

they keep trying to get him on tik-tok but he doesn’t understand what that is

Collins is happy, healthy, gainfully employed in meaningful work, and in love.

When my cousin Olivia was three, she started preschool and became best friends with a boy named Abraham.  Most people called him Abe, even then, because Abraham is a mouthful for a three year old and, to most people, it’s the logical nickname.

Not, however, according to Olivia, who decided to nickname him Ham.

No one’s really sure whether she wasn’t totally listening when he was introduced and only caught the last part of his name, or if she decided Abe was too boring a nickname, or maybe she was just hungry, but the nickname has stuck for the last twenty years.  Of course, Olivia was and still is the only person to use it.

When they were seven or eight, he decided to get back at her by calling her Olive.  That nickname stuck, too, and they’ve been Olive and Ham since.  But only to each other.  They get highly offended if anyone else calls them that.

Last night was their seventh anniversary, and Abe proposed to Olivia, and she said yes.  And how did she announce it on Facebook, you may ask?

People used to tell me “If you like ham so much, why don’t you just marry it?”  So I am.

Also, the minotaur was 100% the victim of the story. King Minos is a dick.

King Minos prayed to the gods to send him a bull to sacrifice. They did. Minos got greedy when he saw how cool the bull was that he refused to sacrifice it like he promised.

The gods noticed, and decided that if he was so horny for the bull, maybe they should make his wife Pasiphae (to whom he was already kind of an asshole) horny for it, too.

Pasiphae was so horny for the bull that she hired Daedalus the engineer to build her a cow fursuit so she could fuck the bull.

Deadalus did, because he knows better than to ask questions when royalty is in the mood to fuck something.

And she did. Wouldn’t fuck Minos at all, only the bull. And because it wasn’t a regular bull, but a bull sent by the gods, she got pregnant and gave birth to the minotaur.

King Minos is furious, especially since he knows it’s his own damn fault.

But he can’t just have the minotaur killed, because it’s his wife’s kid. Royal blood, sent by the gods. So he hires Daedalus to build the Labyrinth to put the minotaur in.

Daedalus and his son Icarus take years to build the Labyrinth. This poor minotaur child probably watched them building his prison all growing up, knowing that as soon as it was finished, his step-dad wanted to throw him in the bottom of it. Talk about way to fuck up a kid.

Once it’s built, Minos throws the minotaur in, and then, to make sure no one knew who the minotaur’s real parents were, or the secret how to get out of the Labyrinth, Minos threw Daedalus and his son Icarus in the Labyrinth, too.

Now, Daedalus is pretty clever, and remembers what an epic fursuit maker he is, so he makes bird wings for himself and Icarus out of feathers and beeswax. They escape out a window, and fly off.

Daedalus warns Icarus not to fly too low and get the wings wet with sea spray, and not to fly too high and melt the wax. But Icarus is so very into flying that he does both those things and drowns in the sea.

Minos eventually had a human son with Pasiphae, Androgeus. Unfortunately, Androgeus was a moron. There are different stories about how Androgeus got killed (won all the games at the Olympics, rubbed it in, and pissed off everyone enough that they assassinated him; the king of Athens talked him into stupidly fist-fighting his mother’s bovine side-piece), but Minos blamed Athens for Androgeus’ death.

So Minos waged war on Athens and won. And demanded that every 7 years, Athens send 7 young men and 7 young women to throw in the Labyrinth to get eaten by his stepson, the Minotaur.

Nevermind that Minos could have just sent, you know, food.

Theseus is a “hero” of Athens, but rather than target the real cause of all the problems, King Minos, he decides the best thing will be to rescue the Athenians thrown in the Labyrinth and slay the Minotaur.

Somehow, Theseus woos and elopes with Minos’ daughter Ariadne, and she gives him a huge ball of string so he can find his way in and out.

Theseus navigates the Labyrinth, kills the minotaur, rescues the Athenians, and sails home.

(Theseus is also kind of a dick, and abandons Ariadne on the island of Naxos on his way home to Athens. But Dionysus, the god of wine, finds her, picks her up, and marries her, so don’t worry, she got an upgrade.)

King Minos, never one to tolerate a single consequence without burning the world down with him, spent the next several years hunting Daedalus, deciding that it was somehow all the fault of his former best employee.

He went around asking people to weave a string through a nautilus shell, and if he found anyone that could, obviously that’s where Daedalus was hiding. Daedalus tied the string to an ant and had the ant walk all the way through.

Daedalus figured out Minos was after him, so he had some servant girls draw Minos a bath. They then boiled Minos alive in the bath.

Somehow, this qualified Minos to be one of the judges for the souls of the dead in Hades? Who knows. Motherfucker somehow keeps getting all the breaks instead of living with the consequences of his actions.

King Minos is the worst.
