if I see one more "why age verification is bad" post that doesn't even bother to mention that locking young people out of huge sections of the public sphere - literally the stated goal and primary impact of this shit - is wrong in and of itself I will simply start hitting people with bricks
yes yes biometric data privacy blah blah adults can hypothetically by harmed by this too. what about the immediate and deliberate and not at all hypothetical harm to youth. why are you acting like a potential data leak about what your face looks like, which if it ever happened would at least be generally recognised as a problem, is a more serious issue than cutting millions of people off from information and community and public expression which is happening right now in the open with large scale support
it's got the stench of fucking "banned books week" on it. thousands of adults congratulating themselves for reading books literally no one is trying to stop them from reading while doing nothing to improve access for the young people who are the ones actually having those books made off-limits to them.
In 2026, the chicest thing a gay actor can do is never explicitly come out as gay but also make it abundantly clear that he is. Coming out is too modern. Staying closeted is too old fashioned. But this method merges contemporary freedom with Old Hollywood glamour and allure, and it weeds out the dumbest people who truly don’t get it. I call it the Pascal Method.
You clearly don't go here or to queer history and signaling, or both, enough to have this conversation and I'm not going to explain it to you. You could have asked questions, you could have done even a modicum of research. You didn't and you made yourself look ignorant. Goodbye.
honestly i never thought the phrase “i want that twink obliterated” was like a sexual thing. like when i read the phrase i imagine “a meteor like the one that killed the dinosaurs is summoned from the heavens and hits the twink in question” type situation
So I watched the Project Hail Mary movie without knowing anything about it. Then I immediately went and bought the book. I finished it just in time to watch the movie again a week later.
And it's not that the book is required reading or anything, but I would recommend it to anyone who can't get enough of the movie. It's not so much a different story, it's kinda just more of the same story. More of our favorite guys, muuuuch more nerdy science and fascinating logistics and problem solving, much more Stratt (!!!) and more nuance on the astrophage apocalypse and the people sent to stop it.
Spoilers for both movie and book under the cut!
If there's ANYTHING I wish the movie had touched more on, it's Stratt and all the horrid things she had to sign off on to make the mission a success. My problematic queen who saved the world with an iron fist and instead of getting hailed as a hero, she got sent to jail for life for it (which, fair, she did break every single geneva convention).
Eva Stratt does get a characterization in the movie, but it's a far cry from how much we see of her in the book. In the book she is ever-present, a central figure in most of Grace's flashbacks and you really get a sense of just how vast her influence and authority is.
The movie also softens her a lot. The karaoke scene especially does a lot to make her more sympathetic and it is also clear from the expressions and body language that Sandra Hüller displays that it's extremely painful for her to treat Grace the way she does, even if she says otherwise. I don't think that's necessarily a wrong direction to go, considering her screen-time is limited, but it saddens me to see that her stern speech on the scale of war and famine over the course of human history is absent from the movie. Eva Stratt loves the world and the humans inhabiting it more than anything and the book does a better job of showing that.
I also just really miss the time spent with the other astronauts. In the movie, Yáo, Ilyukhina and DuBois are introduced in the same breath as the way they want to die when the mission is over. It works, but it's sooooo brief. In the book, that discussion comes much later, takes up half a chapter and there is an emphasis on Grace's relationship to these people. They requested him specifically to record their preferred suicide methods. They trust him with their life and death. They love their little science man more than anyone else on the whole project. When I tell you I cried-
In short, the movie is focused on keeping a certain momentum going and it does a GREAT job at it. It's a really tight, solid movie that stands alone just fine. It could never hope to do justice to the push and pull of making mistakes and solving problems that the book is so good at.

Love how Pokemon games will spend 5 billion hours giving a complete tutorial on every single mechanic possible and then turn around and have the Mold Breaker ability say "[X] breaks the mold!" and never give any further context
