surprisingly forward-thinking of jim henson and co. to make a female character in the 70's that's allowed to be loud-mouthed and violent and kind of overwhelmingly romantic and even a huge bitch at times and not have a moment where any character asks her to change
going through all the muppet movies in a row made me realize that like. miss piggy was made in the 70's. and it's so rare even today to have a character like her. she's loud, she's selfish, she's funny, she's extremely vain, she's obsessed with romance, she's violent, she's kind of annoying, and there's not a single moment in any of these films where she's asked to tone down any of these personality traits. i am not joking when i say that miss piggy might be one of the best treated female characters ever written
you might be on to something, I've never heard Miss Piggy being called problematic either

i genuinely don't think there's much, if anything, hotter than someone clearly having a blast doing something they're really good at. doesn't really matter what it is. the combo of competence and joy is absolutely lethal to me

Ah Julian of Norwich, my beloved. I have a copy of her cat from the stained glass at Norwich Cathedral (sadly it's lost its ginger colour).
A Norwich girl, a cat lady, and authoress of the Earliest known text in the English Language (of which this is from).
One of my favourite historical women.

you've heard of faithful translations now get ready for unfaithful translations where i'm constantly cheating on the text i'm translating with another text that i find more interesting
““Let us free Ireland,” says the patriot who won’t touch Socialism. Let us all join together and crush the brutal Saxon. Let us all join together, says he, all classes and creeds. And, says the town worker, after we have crushed the Saxon and freed Ireland, what will we do? Oh, then you can go back to your slums, same as before. Whoop it up for liberty! And, says the agricultural workers, after we have freed Ireland, what then? Oh, then you can go scraping around for the landlord’s rent or the money-lenders’ interest same as before. Whoop it up for liberty! After Ireland is free, says the patriot who won’t touch socialism, we will protect all classes, and if you won’t pay your rent you will be evicted same as now. But the evicting party, under command of the sheriff, will wear green uniforms and the Harp without the Crown, and the warrant turning you out on the roadside will be stamped with the arms of the Irish Republic. Now, isn’t that worth fighting for? And when you cannot find employment, and, giving up the struggle of life in despair, enter the poorhouse, the band of the nearest regiment of the Irish army will escort you to the poorhouse door to the tune of St. Patrick’s Day. Oh! It will be nice to live in those days! “With the Green Flag floating o’er us” and an ever-increasing army of unemployed workers walking about under the Green Flag, wishing they had something to eat. Same as now! Whoop it up for liberty!”
— James Connolly, Let Us Free Ireland! (1899)
“If you remove the English army to-morrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organisation of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain. England would still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs.”
— James Connolly, Socialism and Nationalism (1897)

just saw a pigeon doing the puffed up courtship dance thing to another pigeon, and as he was strutting around he suddenly stopped for a split second to do a very brief preen-peck at his own side, then returned to the strutting around. and i surprised myself by instantly losing respect for the male pigeon in that moment, like come on man i appreciate you had an itch or whatever but how is she supposed to feel special when you're getting distracted by bullshit like that? which on reflection i don't endorse, i mean those are pretty harsh dating norms i'm imposing on these pigeons, from a total outsider perspective, for no reason. probably not all girl pigeons are as uptight about that sort of thing as i would apparently be if i was a girl pigeon, maybe she even found it endearing who knows, i don't know her. it's none of my business really. sorry pigeons.
a squirrel or perhaps a cardinal posted this
How about you mind your own damn business
*grabs tumblr by the face* hey, hey look at me. whatever you do, we are NOT pivoting to "well Hatshepsut COULD be trans because she never said she WASN’T" after we spent years undoing the whole thing where people shoehorn modern gender frameworks into the perception of ancient historical figures whose culture didn't have this framework. we are NOT going to use "don't put words in the ancients' mouths" as an excuse to say "it could still be true because she never said it was false". Hatshepsut - and before her several other female kings like Sobekneferu and Tawosret - only referred to herself with masculine pronouns when she grammatically had to, while she used feminine pronouns everywhere else she could, indicating that she likely didn’t consider herself as anything other than a woman per the ancient Egyptian constructs of such.
