Gaidhlig and Scots become official languages in Scotland today with the Scottish Languages Act coming into force after it was voted on back in June.

Key parts of the legislation includes the right for parents to request Gaelic schools for their local area, and will help with standardisation of language teaching across the board.

Good signs for the future. In the future would be very interested to see parents (and everyone else) getting access to the same learning materials so they can learn alongside their kids.

@elfspectations close, but no cigar! It's my favourite expression, which in finnish is a cooking pun. The word "stir", as in stirring a soup/porridge/etc is also the word for "confuse", and "to burn to the bottom of the pan" is also used for a person experiencing burnout.

So "people must be stirred, or they'll burn to the bottom of the pot" can also be understood as "one must confuse people sometimes, so that they won't burn out (in life)."

Some of these styles are difficult to describe, so if my description doesn’t make sense, google image search should make it clear.

생머리, straight hair

곱슬머리, curly hair

층을 내다, to get layers

머리를 다듬다, to trim hair

Men’s styles (남성헤어스타일)

바가지머리, a bowl cut

까까머리, a buzz cut

이대팔, a man’s haircut which is parted to the side (the ratio is 2:8)

오대오, a man’s haircut which is parted in the middle (the ratio is 5:5)

댄디컷, a man’s haircut which is long with bangs

투블록, a man’s haircut which is shaved underneath and longer on top

I always wondered why the Western Zodiac and the Chinese Zodiac were both called zodiacs if one was associated w astronomy and the other w time in general. Like what defines a zodiac that the word is only used to describe these two things? Looking up the word “zodiac” in the dictionary didnt help bc it only talked about the western one.

Well, I decided to look up the etymology for zodiac and it turns out it comes from the Greek for “circle of little animals.” I love humans

If you're upset about duolingo firing it's translators, you should check whatever the equivalent to the BBC is for your target language (or the BBC if that language is English, but if your target language is English and you're reading this I think you're good) because a lot of major national news organizations have resources for learning their language. For example, DW has resources to learn German, NHK has resources for learning Japanese, TV5monde has resources for learning French. They're usually free (or at least, I haven't encountered one that's paid yet) and usually pretty comprehensive (though like with all language learning apps/websites def supplement it with other resources)

Heads up to not use Duolingo or to cease using it

In December 2023 they laid off a huge percentage of their translation teams, replacing them with ai and having the remaining members review the ai translations to make sure the translations are “acceptable” (Note how they use the world acceptable and not accurate)

The rate of mispronounced words (mostly on/kun substitutions in Japanese) has gone dramatically up in my lessons, and I'm willing to bet this is why.
