"And I know that I can survive I’ll walk through fire to save my life
And I want it, I want my life so bad I’m doing everything I can
You did not break me I’m still fighting for peace
I’ve got thick skin and an elastic heart”

Ambassador to the Queen | Collin & Ariella (closed)
Collin was definitely a mission minded man. And when it came to his work, well, then he was even more committed to getting the job done. And he was on a mission. He was here to convince Queen Ariella to align herself with the treaty between the British government and the British branch of the Authority. So it wasn’t exactly a surprise that the very night he and Natalie arrived in Oxford, that Collin made his way to Ariella’s throne room. He wasted absolutely no time.
Whether he was actually more excited to see the gorgeous blonde who had taken his vampire virginity than he was about completing the job had absolutely nothing to do with it, of course.
When Collin had been given his orders to go back to Oxford, Ariella had been the one plus. Of course, Collin was under no illusion of them reliving their night together. They hadn’t spoken since their meeting, but when someone was as breathtakingly beautiful as Ariella was, one couldn’t help but look forward to getting to see them on a more regular basis… and be just a little bit hopeful.
Collin had never told anyone of that night, not even Natalie, and he suspected that Ariella hadn’t gone around broadcasting the news either so as he approached the magnificent building where the Queen of Mississippi lived and had audiences, he was the perfect image of a professional ambassador. Clad in his perfectly tailored suit, Collin announced himself to one of his guards and waited, albeit not so patiently, in the lobby.
"Next," Ariella told her guards with a sluggish wave of her hand. It seemed to her that her duties were interminable and lacking in much to distinguish a day's work. She'd wrestled her way to the top, merciless and determined, but she'd outlived much of her reason and, in finally achieving her end, had secured her fate - at least so long as she could preserve the peace. Ariella wasn't a fool: you didn't survive 2,000+ years as a fool. She knew just what was at stake - literally. Becoming Queen had been the one source of safety she'd ever known. Far above her people, she was untouchable. But war would change everything and it was coming, truly coming. Now that vampires were murdering werewolves, it seemed there was no way to stop it. The murderer was a blood radical, and fanatics had always been next to impossible to stop: they wouldn't be finished until they were ended and their end would only foment more to rise up and continue their work. Ariella had to think her way out of this box and she hardly felt up to the task. It was for this reason that she put off the Ambassador from London. It wasn't as if she didn't know they'd sent officials: she'd been involved in the process herself, on orders from the Authority, afterall, Kol holding sway in her queendom until she could return. She knew what he wanted and she also knew she'd been a fool to accept. Yet, if she did, there was a chance it would give her an upperhand and she would be able to deal with this threat quickly and succinctly. But she'd be throwing all her promises to Everett into the wind. There was something about the Packmaster that Ariella couldn't shake. He'd never had to show her any kindness, but he had anyway. In fact, he'd gone out of his way to protect her. No one had done that since...Regulus. Her first Progeny. Breathing out a sigh, Ariella reminded herself that she owed him a debt. She might have died the True Death, had he not stayed with her and watched over her, that day. It might have even served his purposes to let the vampire queen bake in the sun, but he hadn't done that. He'd protected her. What Ariella did not realize was that, in serving Everett, she would be denying his cousin. Obviously, Ariella knew that Collin Lawson had been turned (she'd quite enjoyed their tryst, afterall, if hadn't left her memory even if she chose to keep it to herself), and she knew that he worked in London. It was her vague supposition that he remained in London to treat with the London Authority and would never have occurred to her that he might be the very ambassador she was forcing to wait outside her presence chambers. Waiting sent a message of its own - the Queen was too important to take calls instantly. She was trying to form a first impression, unaware this was more a reunion than meeting. The guard bowed a low obeisance before turning to the doors and waving in the poor envoy, at last. "The London Amabassador," the guard informed her, where she was perched on her throne. "To see Her Grace, the Vampire Queen of Mississippi." Turning her head, Ariella cast her gaze downward to spot...Ariella arched a brow, rising from her throne. Without breaking her gaze with Collin, she spoke to her guards, waving them away. "Out," ordered the queen. "Everyone out." Ariella descended her throne slowly, her dress trailing across the steps of her dais. "I did not expect to see you again so soon," she said, as she approached, extending her hand for him to kiss. His handlers must believ our previous encounters might sway my decision, she thought. Too many lives hang in the balance to make that possible. She formed a smile. "It is a pleasure to see you, again. What news from across the water?"
Stabat Mater | Ariella & Kol
Despite recent problems between the two, Kol still was exceptionally loyal to his queen. So when he received word that she required his presence, he went. Dressed in his trademark of all black attire, Kol was a striking example of what his kind was expected to look like. His height made him imposing, his mannerisms were deliberate and graceful, his beauty unmistakable. If ever a poster boy were wanted for Vampires, Kol Svansson would be the prime choice for a male.
The prime choice for a female would - in his opinion - be his Progeny, Vera. But the beautiful blonde queen before him was definitely a close second. “I have a feeling there’s nothing I know that you don’t already know, my Queen,” he said as he strode towards her and dropped down on one knee before her. Despite how easily he adapted to modern social cues, he still found those of older times to be more proper in their hierarchical system.
He looked up to her from his place on his knee and said, “I am sure you are aware of the wolf being killed by a vampire. I am truly sorry that I did not save them.” It was true to a point. He didn’t like knowing that he’d failed in a task given to him. But, he was also not omniscient. And the vampire who’d killed the wolf was new to the area; how could he possibly have known her intent to kill a wolf. “I will accept whatever punishment you deem necessary.”
Ariella had held out some hope that perhaps Kol had some vital piece of information she'd lacked, when it came to that particular killing. She knew what this spelt. Before, a war might have been prevented, but now it seemed inevitable...the trick was to postpone it as long as possibly. Either way, with a war blossoming in the Old World, it had been breathing down her neck for some time. "I am aware," she confirmed, turning to face him and finding him on one knee. Placing a hand on his shoulder, she pulled him up. "Rise," she commanded softly. "Know that I deem no punishment to be necessary. I punishment enough comes for each of us," she reflected. "There is no way you could have known, and little you might have done to prevent it. I would ask you to keep an eye on this vampire and any companions she might have. I should like to keep the peace while we still can," she added. "War is coming, Kol. It is for us to be ready, to hold it off until we can be sure of a concise victory. Will you be my general in this, Kol? Will you help me protect this realm?" She couldn't have blamed him for resigning, for leaving...But in truth, where would he go? Together with Everett, they had preserved the peace here as long as possibly, but it was quickly spreading throughout the world. Eventually, they all had to take a stand and fight.

Vampire Smile | Ariella & Ryder
Ryder was completely unhappy. Not in his regular day to day life, but in this particular moment. He’d happily lived the past week or so within this town and not had to acknowledge his maker. He would have been much happier if they’d continued circumnavigating each other. But when Kol approached him, he’d known the look on the Viking’s face. And for two days, Ryder had refused to appear. After all, who but she could actually force him to appear before her? Only she held the power.
But then, curiosity had gotten the better of him. What did she want? What could she possibly want to see him for after all this time? They’d both been so young when he’d left. But she’d made her choice, and he’d made his. That had been the end of it, or so he’d thought.
Ryder glared up at the manor for a long time before the guards outside finally told him he had to enter. Brushing their escort off, he sped inside and looked around. He could smell her everywhere, so it was hard initially to pinpoint her location. But he found it eventually and went right to her, tossing the doors open to what he discovered was supposed to be a throne room. He couldn’t help a scoff as he entered the room and stuffed his hands into the pockets of the black wool peacoat he wore. Even in the heat of summer, he insisted on always wearing a jacket. Something he’d picked up in his time in Russia.
His heavy boots clunked against the tile floor as he approached, but he halted as she spoke. Her voice pierced him like a knife. Painful, but it healed and he recovered his snarky, uncaring air. He glanced around him, and then behind him before looking to her and letting out a fake laugh, “You must be speaking to someone else that I just can’t see.”
His brown eyes narrowed as he looked at her. The maroon color of his shirt made his eyes appear to have a tint of red, which made it his favorite color to wear. The jeans he wore were of the darkest blue, indigo in it’s truest form, but were tailored to fit his lithe frame perfectly. He had taken to modern apparel quite well, as he always had.
"For surely you cannot think that there is anything I would want from you,” he said, venom dripping from his words. “You sent your lackey to bid me come here, and I have come. So the question should be what do you want from your subject, your majesty,” he said, giving an over-dramatic and sarcastic bow. He didn’t know if he was making it clear or not, but he would never actually bow to her as a queen. He’d done that for so many years only to be betrayed. It was a mistake he wouldn’t make again.
Once he was standing upright again, he let out another hollow laugh, “It looks like you achieved everything you’ve ever wanted. Up on that throne. Queen to a legion of vampires. Yet all alone. How ironic.”
Her eyes drank him in, thinking how well he'd adapted...but then, that became another habit when you became so ancient. Everything seemed so predictable, so clear. Ariella knew that she, herself, was radiant. She'd always been so, afterall, and there was something gratifying in looking down on him, yet the pleasure dissipated at his words. Some part of Ariella had certainly believed what she'd said. Setting her jaw, Ariella arched a brow. "Today, that command was mine, yes," she agreed. "Yet, it was you who ventured into my queendom, it was you who not only came to my realm, but to the very town where I keep my court. Am I to believe this is a coincidence?" She shook her head. "I am no fool. You would not come within miles of me unless you had another choice...or you wished to seek reconciliation." Arching her brows, she favored him with a sarcastic smile. "Judging by your introductory lines, I shall rule out the latter possibility. So, tell me, Regulus, what brings you to my door? What is it you require? Or, perhaps..." she narrowed her eyes, as she considered. She knew his habits well enough, despite not having seen him in more than a thousand years, and she knew he had a habit of making enemies. "From what are you fleeing?" Her boastful words died in her mouth, however, as he continued to taunt her. Anger flared there, Ariella's lips drawing back in a snarl. There were very few left in this world who could so easily stir the usually implacable vampire to such a blatant and virulent display of rage, but Ryder was certainly one of them. She looked away quickly, her cheeks flushing. He'd hit too close to the mark - one of the few people whose opinion still mattered to the ancient vampire. Afterall, she remembered too well how he'd looked at her when, as a human, he'd saved her life and, knowing what she was, offered her his vein. It could not have been farther from the way he now viewed her, all spite and arrogance. Though she would not admit it openly, Ariella had looked forward to their reunion since the moment she'd arisen to find him missing - it was not supposed to be like this. A bitter laugh tore from her throat. Rising suddenly from her throne, her white robes swirling around her, Ariella flashed down to stand before him, throwing over her chair in her exquisite anger. "You fool," she spat, but her words were controlled, even as her earrings swang alarmingly from her haste. "I could guarantee your safe passage or I could destroy you without any to gainsay me. You would dare insult me? Do you not know who and what I am? I, for cast down my own blood for slighting me and took his throne; I, who made you all that you are; I, to whom you owe each passing breath and each fluttering second of your lonely existence? You shall not make little of me, your Maker, your elder, your Queen. I forbid it." She shook her head, slowly this time. "It is a question not of what I want of you, but of what you would give for me." Turning away from him, she left a pang of regret at loosing her cool, but she said nothing, choosing stillness. He knew as well as she did that she would never do any of the things she threatened. Her fury, she told herself, was an overreaction, but two thousand years had compiled her bitterness towards him and she tried to remind herself that she was the hurt party, surely...She had simply never believed he would actually leave her. He'd been the one person upon whose loyalty she had counted... A hand rose to her lips and she tilted her head and she thought of his last words. All alone. It was the doom to which she had condemned herself, true enough - it had been what she'd sacrificed in a bid for survival. With a more controlled expression, she turned back to him, her blue eyes focused and oddly amused. "Alone, yes," she responded. "Just as you are."

What The Water Gave Me | Ariella & Jackson
It was a little after midnight when Jackson made his way out of his apartment, having only been there for a couple of hours. He’d planned on doing some rearranging as soon as he’d waken up, seeing as Celia was once again spending the night with Elaine. In all honesty, Jackson thought it was a decision that benefited all of them. It was no secret that Elaine was eager to spend time with the elder vampire, and maybe spending some time on his own would do the youngest Foster some good. Or it should have. Finding a family album consisting of old photos did nothing but put a damper on Jackson’s mood again. So he opted for clearly his thoughts somewhere else.
For as long as he could remember, Lamar park was by far one of Jacksons favorite spots in Oxford; particularly the docks leading up to the lake. It held countless memories, such as late night swimming sessions with Harley, followed by countless skinny dipping thanks to a ridiculous game of truth or dare with his cousins. Oddly enough, water had always been somewhat soothing to Jackson. He figured it’s why he always chose to make his way to this particular doc whenever he needed to clear his head.
Unfortunately, he had been so wrapped up in his thoughts that he hadn’t even noticed that his usual spot was already occupied. He stopped in his tracks when he realized the end of the doc was already occupied, a woman sitting on the edge with her feet dipped in the water. She must have heard him coming (but he hadn’t been making any noise?) because she turned slightly to look at him and-wow, she was stunning. “Crap. Sorry I didn’t mean to…intrude or anything,” he began, an sincere apologetic look on his face now.
A medieval legend existed of a White Lady, who would be seen haunting a home - her robes glowing in the darkness - before a death. Ariella knew little of legends, but she knew something of origins, and she often favored white for a kill. She'd donned herself in silky white taffeta, hugging her in all the right places and trailing, a sheer white shawl clung to her shoulders and, slowly, she stalked through the darkness. The wee hours left Oxford in relative silence, the only creatures left stirring were her subjects. Her feet were bear as she stepped onto the dock, padding silently as the waters lapped the wood gently. Ariella gazed into their inky depths, trying vainly to conjure an image of the electric Mediterranean. It ought to have been her home, but Oxford felt to Ariella like a temporary set-up, some ghastly joke she'd made for centuries, almost forgetting the punchline. Yet, her reign marked a very significant fact: while the Old World suffered in the bitter turmoil of wars between the supernatural species, Mississippi, at least, was untouched by them, thanks to her. Her queendom was safe...for now. The wind tugged at Ariella's loose up do, at her dress. Boats rose with swelling waves, shifting against the dock that held them, quite literally, at bay. Slipping down, she dipping her legs into the black depths. It was odd, to be at once frightened and invulnerable. She sucked in a breath at the cold, her lips curving as the tides rose against her knees. She yanked her flowing dress up the waves absently. It no longer seemed to matter. She heard him, long before he reached her, but Ariella was ancient. She had learned to hear everything at once with equanimity, treating it as casual. He was a vampire, afterall, she knew as he grew closer and, when he was quite close, she turned to look. The Queen listened to his words but didn't response, at once, gathering up her creamy skirts as she got to her feet. Water ran in cool droplets down her smooth legs and she, with a self-directed smile, dropped the fabric, which gathered around her wet limbs. Her eyes narrowed as she drank him in. He was undeniably handsome, strong featured with bright eyes and one of the most breath-taking waist-to-shoulder ratios even Ariella had ever seen. Returning her blue hues to his, she stood still. "Forgive me," she said, briefly, drawing herself up with a breath. "I don't know your name." Ariella liked to keep abreast of all the vampires in her realm - and most certainly those in her Area 2, as it was her residence, but she couldn't place him. He must be new, she told herself. Young vampires had a bad habit of wandering places without introducing themselves. Ariella tended to fault the Maker, in these cases: Fledglings did it out of ignorance. Ariella sighed at the sound of his excuses and shook her head. It struck her as tedious, but then that was another mistake common to Fledglings. They clung too much to the mortal things. "It is nothing. You are an immortal," she observed, arching a brow. "You beg for nothing." A smile that was not entirely kindness tugged at her lips. Ariella stretched out her arm. "Come closer." Her brows knit as she watched his body language and the realization that he was not seeking her out but, rather, simply happened upon her, washed over her. Perhaps she could shrug off her crown, this once, she thought. It felt good to be anonymous.
— Deathless, Catherynne M. Valente
"Screw writing “strong” women. Write interesting women. Write well-rounded women. Write complicated women. Write a woman who kicks ass, write a woman who cowers in a corner. Write a woman who’s desperate for a husband. Write a woman who doesn’t need a man. Write women who cry, women who rant, women who are shy, women who don’t take no shit, women who need validation and women who don’t care what anybody thinks. They are all okay, and all those things could exist in the same woman. Women shouldn’t be valued because we are strong, or kick-ass, but because we are people. So don’t focus on writing characters who are strong. Write characters who are people."
