WHY WOULD YOU NOT TELL ME IT WAS SLIME AT THE TOP OF THE POST. I THOUGHT YOU WERE ACTUALLY PUTTING YOUR FINGERS INTO THE WET CORN AND THE PUDDING AND THE THOUGHT OF THOSE TEXTURES MADE ME WANT TO SCREAM AND POSSIBLY VOMIT.

Can someone make a show called âAutism Navigating Momsâ where autistic adults have to cope with the ableism from Autism MomsïŒ
I didnât watch the whole thing, but from what I saw:
Two of the moms talk about how devastating the diagnosis is, although both say that parents need to get over it quickly and care for the child they have
The three moms recommend using social media as the first source for navigating the diagnosis (which isnât bad advice in itself, but parents are more likely to find a super ableist Facebook group than an open group that includes autistic adults).
One mom talks about how great her sonâs ABA therapist is
Autism $peaks 100 Day Kit is promoted đ€ź
The main discussion about sensory issues was great. No complaints there, and they did a nice job discussing ways to help their child cope
I know this is the premise of the show, but all three moms have sons around the same age, so theyâre missing out on the perspective of parents with autistic daughters or parents who have helped their child transition to adulthood
Not to mention the perspective of autistic people themselves, which doesnât appear to have been even considered by the moms
Overall, I think itâs extremely well intentioned, as most Autism Mom things are. I hope the rest of the show addresses this issues, but I wouldnât count on it.
sometimes thereâs videos that make me happy to exist on this planet
iâd reblog this even if it was a still image
I know itâs a sesame street clip but seriously, who is the target audience for this?
Parents watching it with their kids, I guess?
literally everyone
Everyone. No, really⊠everyone.
For adults, the appeal is Sir Patrick Stewart doing a kidâs educational bit in full Shakespearean dress and style; thereâs a delightful cognitive dissonance between the very serious presentation and the very simple content.
For very small children, itâs educational: this is the letter âBâ; hereâs how itâs shaped; hereâs some words you know that start with it. Oh, and hereâs a word you may not be familiar with that starts with it, so you can recognize that itâs the sound that matters, and not whatever other connection you made between the other two words.
For older kids: youâve probably heard that âto be or not to be?â speech, or at least part of it, so you can enjoy some of the parody the adults are watching. Also, hereâs how to describe how a letter is made - how to teach young siblings who donât read yet, how to explain both the shape and the sound.
For kids with dyslexia: hereâs how you differentiate a âBâ from a P or D or E. You may have to go slowly and look carefully at the exact shapes that make up the whole, but there are differences and you can learn to recognize them.Â
For teens or young college students: In addition to whichever parts of those are relevant to you, hereâs what Shakespearean acting sounds like. Hereâs how to enunciate clearly and slowly, so your audience can understand terms they may not recognize and still follow the gist of what youâre saying. If youâre reading Shakespeare in school, try sounding it out like this and see if that helps it make sense.
For new RenFaire workers: Hereâs how to pronounce âzounds.âÂ
One of the most glorious things in the world is Shakespearean actors doing stuff like this.
If begineth even be a word
Yup. This is a good, complex, multilayered performance that is meant to be watched again and again at different ages and levels of education so that it can continue to provide new information and understanding that you werenât previously able to appreciate.
The world needs more of it.
That always was the beauty of Sesame Street. How universally it could be enjoyed.
Unless Iâm missing something, the sister never confirmed that the scar was the reason she wasnât invited. Yeah, thatâs probably the case, and Iâm pissed that she would restrict any child/teen from an event like that regardless, but Iâve been in several situations where the immediate assumption is ableism/racism/homophobia and it turned out otherwise
Over two dozen out LGBTQ Paralympians are headed to Tokyo, more than double the number in Rio.
This is great, but why is this the only article on the Paralympics that I have seen this year? And the article has no mention of disability whatsoever. The closest it gets is âwheelchair basketball.â And it then dares to include this quote:
âI love seeing our out Paralympians highlighted because it shows that while we still have a ways to go, as a society, we have become more accepting therefore people are able to be their authentic selves and feel safe...It gives me great pride to be part of such a diverse trailblazing group of people.â
Being LGBT is not the only thing that makes Paralympics diverse
I can guarantee that most, if not all, of the athletes often do not feel safe presenting their true, disabled selves. They are told that they should not consider their disability to be part of their identity. They try to hide their limitations as best they can, even when itâs painful to do so. They are infantilized or used as inspiration porn despite being world-class athletes.
Yes, this is is great for LGBT visibility. It sucks from an ableism standpoint though. No one wants to talk about the disability part, but pointing out the more acceptable minority group is fine.

I sent a strongly worded explanation as to why I am not interested in the job.

just to be clear, the fact that music was nominated for a golden globe is absolutely disgusting. every single (adult) involved in that gross, ableist movie should be sickened by themselves.
for those of you who don't know, music (2021) is a movie being directed by sia about a nonverable autistic girl. not only does it not include any actually autistic people in the movie itself but it also only took advice from autism speaks which is looked at as a hate group by the majority of the autistic community. leaked scenes have also shown the movie glorifying prone restraints which are incredibly dangerous and have resulted in major injuries and even death to disabled people as recently as last year.
autistic people just like me have been incredibly outspoken about how harmful this movie is but the allistic have been mostly silent. we are already seeing reviews calling this movie 'inspiring' and important' and it's absolutely horrific! we need your help calling this out. please stand with us and call out this disgusting display of disrespect to autistic folks.

p.s. please, please reblog if you aren't autistic.
Autism Awareness Month is in April.
Now is the time to email organizations that fund Autism $peaks
One of the largest supporters of A$ is the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, having pRoUdLY donated over $11,000,000 to date. Hereâs why they do so:
As Alpha Xi Deltas we have a variety of reasons for supporting Autism Speaks. Some of us are mothers, sisters, grandmothers, family members or friends of children with autism. Some of us are teachers, researchers, doctors, therapists, social workers or other professionals whose careers are intertwined in the autism community. And of course, we also have Sisters who do not have a personal connection with autism before joining and yet still share Mrs. Wrightâs and Alpha Xi Deltaâs passion for our philanthropic mission.
Because, *obviously*, no one in the sorority could be autistic themselves.
Consider contacting them using this form and asking them to find a different charity to support. Explain your reasons for hating the organization.
If you are not aware of why A$ is a terrible organization, search âAutism $peaksâ on Google or any social media platform. Or just look up âwhy autism speaks is harmful.â I am opting not to list the many, many reasons here for the sake of brevity and focus.
Whatâs Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS), and why do so many autistic people have it?
I learned about this the other day, when I posted about palinopsia (visual trailing/afterimages) being common in autistic people, and a couple of our followers told me about their VSS. I did some more research, and discovered that I also have it.
Visual Snow Syndrome is a neurological condition that interferes with visual processing. Itâs caused by hyperactivity and hyper-excitability of nerves in certain areas of the brain that process visual information.
The core feature of VSS is constantly seeing tiny, fuzzy âfeedbackâ in the environment. Itâs kind of like seeing the world through a staticky TV screen. Some peopleâs visual static is larger than others. Mine is relatively fine-grained, but it gets bigger and more obvious in low lighting.
Some of the other symptoms of VSS include:
Palinopsia (visual trailing/afterimages)
Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
Increased and enhanced ectopic phenomenon, such as floaters, phosphenes, and Scheererâs phenomenon
Seeing glare, starbursts, and halos around lights
Difficulty seeing at night/in the dark
Seeing random flashes of light and/or color, without cause from the environment
Itâs common for people with VSS to experience comorbid migraines, but VSS is not the same thing as migraine aura.
So, why do autistic people often have VSS?
It comes down to the fact that VSS is caused by the hyper-excitability of neurons in areas of the brain that process visual information. A core feature of autism is hyper-excitable neurons, especially in areas of the brain that have to do with sensory processing. So it makes sense that autism would often inadvertently cause VSS.
Here are some illustrations of visual phenomenon that VSS causes, in case you want a better understanding of what the world looks like for me and many other autistic people.

I hope yâall have learned something :)
Iâve found it very intriguing to realize that the way I see the world is more unique than I once knew!

Wait your telling me this isn't what everyone sees? I always thought it was just cause I was tired
I have been obsessing over this for two days because apparently most people's vision doesnt go kind of static when they're tired!??!? And apparently no one knows what I mean when I say when I close my eyes I see kind of moving glowy dots. Now I'm noticing it a lot more, but is this that? I don't get migraines or anything. I'm so confused. Also if most people don't see the glowy dots, what do they see when they close their eyes. Is it like a block of darkness?
HANG ON WHAT DO YOU M E A N SOME PEOPLE DONT SEE GLOWING DOTS WHEN THEY CLOSE THEIR EYES
Hold it do normal people not have starbursts around lights
Adding myself to the list of people who just found out this isnât typical
i love being sober and talking to drunk people at parties cause i asked a guy âif you were a wizard what kind of spells would you castâ and i know he wasnt lying when he said âsummon creaturesâ
I have to try this. The questioning, not the summoning, I swear. @climbermedic
