Here's my definitive list of objects currently orbiting Iota Persei that shouldn't be, in reverse order of how much they're really not supposed to be here:
3) An exoplanet. It's not very big, though that'd be a silly reason for NASA to have missed it all these years. Triton's analysis found trace carbon dioxide in its atmosphere - plus it's blue - but Triton also started this mission caring for a crew that was zero-percent dead and we're up to sixty-six point six repeating, so how much should I really trust the robot?

I roll my eyes and keep scrolling. On the other side of the clear pane in a sea of deep brown glass that seems to make up his spacecraft, the only other lifeform for thirty light years seems to melt. He merges with a shadow cast by the warm yellow-orange light streaming through the transparent walls of the narrow bridge between our ships. Then he pops back out from another one up by the ceiling, which I'm learning is something he likes to do when he's bored.

He coalesces again, and I wait as slightly agitated clicking comes from his dark, angular shape.

It's a nice voice, actually. Not too low, not too high. Kind of like the faint, airy calls still wavering underneath it.

I know I'm smiling like an idiot, but God, or gods, or whoever's listening at the edge of oblivion, does it feel good to talk to someone.
