not to sound corny but the textile arts make me feel connected to the world around me. it's so intentional and deliberate and when i sit and do it, i think a lot about how many other women that came before me used to do it, how many hands have used the same supplies i am using, and how many other people might be doing the same thing as me all across the world right now
one of my favourite things is when museums have really old sewing tools and they are so similar to the needles we use today but so many lifetimes have happened since they were last used
hundreds , maybe thousands of years old, yet so alike to what I use to create today
I don't appreciate gun threats, regardless of how they are worded. Fuck this shit. You need to know about this story.
"The rabbit's got the gun now," said a lawyer for former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, who is trying to force reporter Anna Wolfe to reveal
Please help share this!!
You cannot vote your way out of fascism.
But you can sit and allow fascists to vote you into fascism.
Which is a problem, since you cannot vote your way back out.
Fascists would love nothing more than for you to abstain from voting.

teaching yourself how to deal with mildly annoying inconveniences is imo an essential part of treating the disabled people around you with compassion and no i'm not kidding
sometimes you have to share a public space with someone who has loud verbal tics. sometimes a chronically ill friend will have to cancel plans because of a flare up even if you were really looking forward to hanging out with them. sometimes an autistic person will talk over you or interrupt you because they missed a particular cue. sometimes people who struggle to take care of themselves will smell bad. sometimes people with intellectual disabilities will need you to give them more detailed, patient instructions, even if it seems simple to you. sometimes you will need to give up your seat on the bus for a physically disabled person even if you don't want to move.
accommodating disabled people is not always easy or comfortable; being an ally means doing it anyway.
There are only around 1,500 native Cherokee speakers left, and most of them are elders
Little Cherokee Seeds is a program where mothers and babies spend all day with first language Cherokee speakers, speaking nothing but Cherokee, so that the babies become a new generation of native speakers. They're also teaching traditional skills and mothering practices to the mothers to pass on.
This is so so important for the survival of the language. These babies are on track to being fluent first language speakers, and they will be able to keep the language going for another lifetime.
I recommend checking out the little cherokee seeds facebook page!!
god, GOD Freddie Mercury was such a fucking badass
This doesn’t do the moment justice. He took the swig of vodka, said “I’ll fucking do it darling”, and then ABSOLUTELY NAILED IT in one fucking take
Mood for 2019: “I’ll fucking do it, darling.”
Reblog for Freddie Mercury level belief in yourself this new year!
I’ll fucking do it, darling
I want this as a tattoo :D
So I found the letter that the Animorphs author and trans ally K. A. Applegate wrote after the series ended and I’m FLOORED
I mean
You want something even crazier? Animorphs ended in May 2001. She didn’t know what was coming, but damn if she didn’t give her readers a much needed dose of reality about the horrors of war right before we were really going to need it.
If you enjoy easily-digestible sci fi, and can get your hands on the animorphs books, I really recommend it. They’re fucking great and thoughtful in a lot of ways you might not have picked up on as a kid. I’ve read the first dozen or so books over the last couple of years and they’ve literally changed the way I look at the world.
Not to butt in since the series came along when I was in high school and thus a bit after my time, but I am a librarian and as such I am ALL ABOUT matching people to the books they need in whatever format is available.. You can download the entire series. It’s free.
Applegate’s statement on the piracy subject is quoted from an AMA here for those that have moral issues with it. for those that don’t want to click, she says: “We do not take them down. Or ask for them to be taken down. I think once the books are available to buy—paper or e—it would be nice if people who could afford it would buy. (our kids have very expensive tastes. You know: food and whatnot.) But for years they’ve been unavailable except by ‘pirated’ means. These men and women kept the series alive. They kept the books available. So no, we did NOT take these books down.”
Go forth, and read.
Wow wtf HIV/AIDS was discovered by Flossie Wong-Staal, an Chinese-American woman, and she’s the reason the HIV test even exists. AND THEN she invented the molecular knife that lead to treatments for HIV/AIDS. And she’s STILL ALIVE. We don’t hear about the contributions of Women of Color enough, my word. Madness.

Thank you, Flossie. 💜💜💜
she has since passed away (pneumonia during the height of covid in 2020) and I just want to say what a huge loss this is. she was still actively consulting with scientific research, and if you work in the sciences you know that people in the field keep working, advising, and providing their decades of insight up until their death. her knowledge was invaluable to us. and still she saved millions of lives.
This is why it’s so important for parents to support their trans kids.
If I don’t reblog this, then I’m dead.
Hnnnnnnnngk I want it.
I fucking knew it, I SAID it: they're making ADHD people the next culture war targets. They will 'just ask questions' until we lose every scrap of ground we've gained in the last decade and more. We may not quite inspire the same level of hatred as a sexual minority, but we can very easily be made to inspire disdain and that also works.
They will strip us of our accomodations and our medications and try to stifle any sense of shared identity, and if that kills some of us, oh well. So long as it fuels another outrage cycle, fine.
So many of the tropes they've been using on trans people work extremely well on ADHD people too! "There are too many of these people suddenly! It must be a fad! It spreads through friend groups! And online! People are going private for diagnoses and that's bad! They are using pOwERfUl medical interventions and we think it's freaky!"
I saw the first ripples of this in terf circles about two years ago. And of course it's spread.
6% of British ADHD people lost their jobs in the last year thanks to the meds shortage. SIX PER CENT! And that just made these ghouls go "ooh, tasty, what else can we do?"
Recently an 'expert' was on the BBC saying people see ADHD diagnosis as a "golden ticket." Laurence Fox has been ranting that the condition doesn't exist and threatening "'you won't poison my child's body [with ADHD meds] against my consent"
People need to be aware this is going to get worse. Maybe, if we're lucky, it won't get really bad. But it's going to get worse than it is now.
Maybe find a way to function like all the people before did.
... Maybe stop acting like humanity has always had to swallow drugs.
Take their power away and they can't hurt you. Depend on them, and they can crush you.
Go and ask the 25% of the UK prison population with untreated ADHD how they are enjoying their power to function without having to "swallow drugs."
Do you know how many women with ADHD attempt suicide? One in four. Do you know what reduces suicidality? Did you say "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and being successfully shamed into pretending your problems aren't real for the sake of everyone else's comfort?"
The actual answer is medication. Do you know another way humanity with ADHD functions when blissfully free of "their" power?
They get into a lot of car accidents.
And HALF of them get a substance abuse problem.
And they fail academically a lot.
And they can't get or can't keep jobs.
And they are poorer.
And they drag around a completely unnecessary and preventable sense of shame and failure and helplessness.
So, how did people with ADHD function before diagnosis and treatment existed? A lot of the time by dying before the age of forty-six. You apparently have ADHD yourself. You are nevertheless regurgitating ableist, eugenicist propaganda presumably because you like to have someone to feel better than and/or you're desperate to be seen as one of the good ones.
Read this, learn some fucking solidarity, and enjoy your block.
A tuberculosis outbreak in Long Beach comes amid a national rise in cases.
Great work, antivaxxers.
This is a significant danger to homeless populations living in close quarters and prison inmates. It's more about severe neglect and abuse of prison populations than being quite as simple as "ugh antivaxxers at it again", because drug resistant TB, or MDR-TB, was first formally documented in a British prison study in 1955-56, well before the Antivaxxer movement began as we know in contemporary terms. The Antivax movement has been around since vaccines were first invented, but tuberculosis WAS cured in combination to vaccination and the advent of penicillin. It came back worse than ever the worse we've been treating our poor and outcast populations like inmates and the unhoused. In the above NBC article, it states almost immediately that this outbreak took place where MDR-TB does its worst to the most people: an overcrowded, squalid building populated by people that are probably too poor to afford regular adequate preventative care and treatment. One person at least has already died, which is a strong indicator for the presence MDR-TB rather than Ye Olde TB.
What often goes unmentioned is that Tuberculosis is no longer on our list of "cured" diseases. Due to atrocious prison and homeless conditions around the world most than lack of vaccinations, because even the Tuberculosis vaccine itself can't always protect patients from contracting TB and MDR-TB, especially in countries with poor access to healthcare for the general population, high population density, high poverty and homelessness rates, and overcrowded prison systems. In the US, states like California that get most of their agricultural exports through prison slave labor (13th Amendment. Read it. It's right there and you should be PISSED it is). However, as a result of packing elbow-to-elbow packing plants and rarely-adequately-outfitted medical bays, Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis is now a real thing, cannot be cured in most patients, keeps getting MORE drug-resistant to more and more drugs, and does not respond to the once-effective cures that had already been invented decades ago. It mostly afflicts inmates and homeless people, the vaccine for it is usually only available in countries like India and not regularly used in the US, and can spread to anyone in close proximity with someone infected by blood, mucous, and particulate contact from their coughs/sneezes.
Fuck the antivax movement, seriously, but let's please also remember that some of these returning diseases aren't their OG versions anymore: they've mutated and gotten harder to treat and almost impossible to cure, because TB only afflicts poor people and jailbirds in the US as far as anyone knows, and a lot of people are shockingly okay with the notion of our culture's untouchables dying to a disease we already cured that's growing more teeth, spreading to "wanted" populations of people, and LOVES to co-infect with none other than motherfucking COVID.
Reblogging for additional context that is extremely relevant and important.
They will destroy nature and call it saving the planet.
Joshua Trees are a weird thing that stayed since the last Ice Age. They're on the decline anyways because no mega mammals eat their seeds and pop them out else where anymore. Hasen't been one around in over ten thousand years but still they persist. Sometimes they thrive in small areas and other times they die out.
Then California decides fuck the Joshua Trees and destroys four thousand of them.
Fuck California. Joshua Trees provide shelter to hundreds of different species.
Cunts.
