I don’t doubt that Francesca loved John but it was a platonic love rather than romantic. As an autistic person Fran does not really fit in with the rest of her family. They’re loud and outgoing while she is a bit of a quiet recluse. She’s felt like an outsider her entire life, not having many (or any) friends, not liking what others like, and not expressing herself like others expect her to, so when she finally meets a person like herself she’s ecstatic. She’s so excited. I mean look at her!
It’s easy for anyone, but especially autistic people, to confuse romantic and platonic love. Francesca has never had a friend like her before. She finally feels a sense of belonging and she thinks “this must be it.” I think she truly believes she’s in love until her wedding day when they share their first kiss.
She was hoping for fireworks. Or all the butterflies her mother and elder siblings had spoken about. Instead, there is nothing. And you can see that during the scene. Her smile falters. When the wedding is over I imagine she convinces herself that it was nothing, that everyone else was just exaggerating. Then, in comes Michaela Stirling.
Butterflies. The stuttering. The panic cause what are you feeling?? No this cannot be happening! You love John, you’re in love with him. This must be something else. Irritation. Insecurity.
She carried deep affection for John from the beginning. A realtionship built on mutual respect and shared interests. A companionship which I’m so sorry that Fran lost. Platonic love isn’t something I think Fran had felt before that point from anyone outside her family. But what she feels for Michaela is so clearly different and she can tell that it is, but with compulsive heteronormativity and a society where homosexuality is frowned upon (to say the least) of course she’d try to push down those feelings as soon as they came up.
I believe Francesca would’ve been happy to spend the rest of her life with John but she could never feel fulfilled with him because Francesca Bridgerton is a
