Please I’m begging you, please watch Klaus on Netflix, just for the sole animation and the tens of facial expressions per second that are all hand drawn
WAIT
HAND DRAWN
IT’S FREAKING HAND DRAWN
STORAGE BETTER MAKE SPACE I AM COMING FOR YOU
HOLD UP I THOUGHT THIS MOVIE WAS STYLIZED CGI LIKE THE SPIDERVERSE MOVIE??? WTF HOW IN THE HELL IS ALL THAT HAND DRAWN YOU’RE SHITTING ME hold up lemme google this shit -
H. Holy fuck. These people are absolutely insane. How on earth did they even -
OH OF COURSE IT WAS HIM
Y’all might find this interesting.
Hey, that’s my video! Yay! Anything I can do to help people appreciate this masterpiece of new technology and 2D art style! :)
Klaus is great! It’s funny and beautifully animated and has such a well-designed cast of characters. I highly recommend it to anybody looking for something to watch.
Hey guys it gets even better!!
For a long time 2d animation hasnt been able to improve like how cgi always does, its one of the reasons that theres less of it now. One of the ways to improve 2d is too add shadow and depth but that requires drawing it on every frame and thats a shit ton of money amd time.
The team of Klaus set out to solve this problem. They made very cool programs that determine the idea of the form based on line art and one to add shadows where the amimators do a few hand done ones and the program dos the rest using those as a guide, only needing tweaks after.
Its a cost effective way to improve 2d animation and could possibly mean the return of it by usuing this technology.
I don’t think people understand how FAR 2D animation has come in recent years, because we never see it showcased in feature films anymore.
We have programs that can take vector AND raster lines, from two separate frames, and then auto in-between them.
We have programs that can simulate the look of additional hand drawn frames to make frame holds look more alive and authentic.
We have programs that simulate brush strokes and paint effects that can be manipulated and enhanced in real time.
We have programs that allow you to paint directly onto 3D objects, adjust them frame by frame, and simulate the look of 2D animation.
We’ve even got programs that can take an art style and apply it to an animation using algorithms and deep learning techniques.
Like… the tech is THERE. It EXISTS. All we need are companies to have faith in the products and people willing to tell good stories.
Black Cats art by Rozenn Grosjean.
where is that renaissance painting with those two fellers and a giant fucking random skull on the floor that looks like it was accidentally stretched out in photoshop
THANK YOU
somebody please explain
Someone once told me it’s like that because it was designed to be hung in a stairwell so the skull pops out as you walk past.
…I guess it works but you have to be at a pretty sharp angle
There was a whole trend at one point where artists would include something in their paintings (usually a skull, for whatever reason) that’s super distorted in just the right way so that it looks normal if you hold the painting up to a convex/concave mirror. I have absolutely no idea why. But I think that’s what’s going on here.
In case anyone’s curious, here’s what it looks like when you walk past it irl:
It does have a 3D effect to it! It’s pretty neat, guess it would be even more impressive to people from the 14th century.
honestly, people just looking at the skull are missing the real deal here
You can read any implied text you see in this thing, even the book, that’s how detailed it is. Look at the painting on those letters!
jesus christ you’re just showing off now, Hans!
HANS OH MY GOD
anyway, the skull apparently had some meaning about the transcendence of death, you can only see it clearly when you can’t see the world clearly and vice versa, but man, I’m all about the detail in this guy’s shit
No, I think you’re missing the real deal here
I walk a corny road, The only one that I have ever known
I know Black Mask can genuinely be an intimidating villain (which I hope he is for the Birds of Prey movie) but the #1 version of him that I’ll always love is him in Under the Red Hood when he just has one banger line of dialogue after another. Also his beady little eyes are so fricken funny.
like
the way he interacts with everyone is gold
about your fawkes the phoenixes post, i always thought fawkes was based on a secretary bird. could you draw fawkes as one? that'd be so cool
ayy you mean this post ?? and yeah actually secretary birds are kind of the body type i imagine for em anyway ! maybe
Fawkes the Phoenix was based on a harpy eagle, howmcute would a kestrel phoenix be with a peacock tail and train?
this is a Good Opportunity considering i was never a big fan of fawkes’ movie design how about
ok but what about
@triruntu
@elodieunderglass uhhhhhh… Birb?
I Suggest we Consider:
AQUATIC (penguin)
No wait
this is terrible
put it back
the poor thing
why would anyone do this
I dunno, I kinda love it… :D
It’s a fine line to tread when you’re breeding your phoenix. A swan is good:
Elegant
Classic
Like Cleopatra, he burns upon the water
Equal parts beauty and danger
Full of Secrets
But take it a few genes to the left and you’ve got a GOOSE
A raptor if raptors were total idiots
Neither beauty nor grace
Full of Hate
Has so much poop for you
(Make no mistake, a swan will mess you up just as hard as a goose. But it is the difference between being slain with a katana and getting whacked with a bag of old potatoes.)
It got better
@elodieunderglass
Oh my God someone actually drew a Good Version of my Dubious Penguin????? And THEN someone added a sweonix (swan phoenix)? Oh man, this is the stuff you miss when you’re in the middle of a reblog chain.
@english-history-trip that is some powerful art, and I respect the trip that it represents from the sublime to the absurd, for in this journey we find enlightenment.
@keire-ke your magnificent penguin art represents the other side of the journey, which takes us from the absurd to the powerful. In this journey we find truth.
According to some sources, the legend of the phoenix might be derived from another bird noted for it’s striking appearance and who, indeed, are of the order Phoenicopterus
You know what birds those are?
FLAMINGOS!
Just saying…. if someone wanted to try ANOTHER take on Fawkes….
This is terrible and I feel like I should apologise, but really, it’s @iconuk01‘s fault.
Also I am not a certified Birb artist.

Y’all leaving out the POTOO! FORESHAME! I have rectified this:
The current usage of “a few bad apples” bothers me.
A few bad apples spoil the barrel. If you put a rotting apple in with three dozen good ones, every adjacent apple will be rotting within days. “A few bad apples” does NOT mean “we have a good barrel but, oh well, sometimes bad things happen.” “A few bad apples” means “Our entire organism is rotting from the inside out, triggered by the actions of a few and perpetuated by the natural processing of the whole.” When you say “we had a few bad apples” your next words had BETTER be “we excised them, quickly and permanently, and checked the remaining ones to make sure they’re still good.”
This has been my rant, thank you.
The full phrase as I’ve always heard it is “don’t let a few bad apples spoil the whole barrel”, which I guess people sometimes wrongly interpret as “so enjoy all the good apples in there and don’t be so darn picky about the bad ones” and not, y’know, “get the bad ones the heck out of there before the rot spreads”.
this is my favourite bit of otgw trivia (text from Art of Over the Garden Wall)
It blows my mind that someone would post this, then choose not to link to the video:
There’s a hidden level of brilliance in this moment:
Chef Boyardee is known today for his cheap out-of-the-can pasta, but in his native Italy he was a renowned expert chef. He was reduced to the face of microwaveable eateries after his death.
Sound like anyone else from this movie?
Chef Ettore Boiardi, known today as Chef Hector Boyardee, was a key player in keeping poverty struck families fed for a low price, before he ever came out with the canned pasta line. He would jar his sauce in milk bottles and provide bags of dry noodles for families in Cleveland, Ohio’s Little Italy sector. It was during the Depression, and pasta could be made in large portions at a low cost. This was the start of his venture.
After years of success, he eventually opened his canning facility, opened his restaurant “Il Giardino d’Italia” in New York, and helped feed the Allies during the war. Everyone always glazes over this part of his life, especially the Cleveland part. He lived here. He DIED here. He’s BURIED HERE. My mother took care of him at the nursing home she worked for in her early 20′s when he was ailing and spoke of nothing but the kindness he and his family radiated when they were there. Chef Boiardi was an immigrant with a dream and was always there to help those in need, because he knew what it was like to be in that position. Never let that go.
