“Why can’t we have more complex female characters?”
You all couldn’t even handle them:
Edit: If you think of more characters, you can add them by reblogging with their picture

Can you guess where it is?
i get so emotional every time i think about fanfic culture. it's just so beautiful that people are writing and anonymously posting these thousand-word stories about characters we all love and not even getting any money or public fame from it. it's literally just for the love of the game.
shout out to everyone who participates in fanfic culture, be it reading or writing fanfics. you are contributing to such a lovely thing <3

Thinking about Jax and Lee (Leroy) in relation to one another makes me feel real bittersweet.
Lee was the happily ever after Jax never got, and Jax was the cautionary tale Lee never had to become.
Like... Ough...
nooooo… stooooooooooppppp…..
Now that it’s been confirmed that Jax is canonically trans, looking back, I’d like to add to my previous theory.
So originally, I thought it was symbolism for how Jax is afraid of vulnerability and being judged for who he is underneath (and also possibly sa, go to this post for more details). And I still think that.
But now, I think it’s also symbolism for being trans. Jax has not accepted herself, and she wants to keep this part of her under wraps and away from eyes that could use this to hurt her.
Jax is obviously uncomfortable with how she feels about her gender, and that’s been hinted at throughout the show, especially in the Maid Dress Scene™ in Episode 5.
Jax doesn’t feel comfortable in her own skin, but it’s the skins she’s got, so she’s gotta cover up and hide to protect the most vulnerable part of herself.
“Oh Batman is abusive in comics” “how many times does a character need to be mischaracterized before it’s just their character”
I DON’T CAAAAARE
Batman being abusive to his kids is so fundamentally wrong and makes him a one dimensional character and I personally hate it.
“Oh the dark gritty character is dark and gritty and mean” hey how about the dark gritty character is dark and gritty because he has to be. He’s such a bleeding heart that he can’t let his enemies (and sometimes allies) know how much he loves and cares. He loves so much. He loves his city, he loves his kids. He’s full of so much love yet he can’t express it because he’s never been taught how. And maybe he’s harsh but it’s because he couldn’t imagine what he would do if he lost another kid.
Batman is a hero, not a villain and it’s a disservice to make him behave like one.

CAINE: Tortures the circus members and treats them as playthings
THE FANDOM: Aww he’s just being misunderstood he’s a lil baby uwu he needs a huggg
JAX: Pushes people away because of past trauma, accidentally causes his friends to abstract
THE FANDOM: Ew he’s such a horrible person, I hate him, he’s irredeemable
I’m gonna elaborate on what I mean by this:
I love Caine.
He is very flawed and doesn’t understand humans; he hurts them and feels no remorse for his actions until the very last second.
But he also tries his best, and he does eventually come to realize why what he’s doing is wrong. He redeems himself and becomes a good friend to the rest of the circus members.
This was not meant to throw shade onto Caine, but I see why that might have been interpreted that way, so I apologize.
Jax is a great, complicated character.
He’s a bully. He hurts others and pushes people away. His actions have lead to the abstractions of both of his friends.
But it’s also easy to understand why he acts that way. He’s constantly paranoid the people around him are going to hurt him because of how his parents (especially his mother) treated him in the past. He pushes them away before they can hurt him and before he can be abandoned by them. He hurts them first before they can hurt him.
Does this justify his actions? No, absolutely not. How Jax treats others is not excusable by his trauma.
Jax did make his friends abstract, but I highly doubt it was deliberate. Jax debates checking up on Ribbit multiple times in the flashback. He never ends up going through with it, but it’s unlikely that he would even consider going to them if he was purposefully trying to get her to abstract. And Jax his clearly distraught after he runs away when he finds out Kaufmo abstracted.
Jax being a bully is also not a good point on why he deserves to be hated. Jax has been a bully since episode one. He’s picked on all the characters (especially the girls) since the show began. Yet Jax has not gotten this amount of hate until recently.
I’ve also seen a lot of people upset with how much screen time Jax gets conspired to the other characters. This is understandable, but at the same time, it was important to the story for Jax to have gotten as much screen time as he did. His abstraction wouldn’t have been nearly as impactful (or even as relevant) had he had less screen time. The amount of time Jax got on screen was important to the flow and outcome of the story.
Jax also does have that brief moment of almost-redemption when he finally reaches out and accepts the hug from Pomni.
TL;DR: Jax is a complicated, flawed character who is very much not black-and-white. His past traumas are a huge factor as to why Jax acts the way he does, and while that does not make it excusable, it makes it more understandable. He gets a lot of hate compared to other characters with even more questionable decision-making, and personally I think that’s unfair.
Overall, I believe both characters are very much redeemable given the time and care.
Think whatever you want to, but this is my opinion.
