these think pieces about Hudson’s flat acting are racist, that is something we can agree on, but they fundamentally misunderstand and misrepresent acting as a craft
this whole industry praises big and loud acting choices, method acting that is often not safe for the actors nor the people around them, when that is not the end all be all of great acting
we praise Connor for his dedication to learning the russian monologue so convincingly, and while it is impressive what he managed to do with so little time and do it so well, i feel like it was a must for the character (his other choices of fleshing Ilya out his nervous ticks, his physicality, the way his eyes track others in specific moments are often quite ignored and overlooked for these more obvious and louder choices)
so for critics and journalists to shit on Hudson for his approach when his character is quite different to Ilya and the quieter, more introverted one is certainly “a choice”
Hudson understands his character to the core, he knows his interior so well that he can inhabit Shane so faithfully i forget its Hudson.. the more i rewatch the more i am drawn to Shane because of all these choices
what draws you in with Shane is his all the micro expressions, his eyes, the way he is relatable and flawed and how he expresses himself; Hudson’s choice to portray Shane’s autism and how that would affect him in so many different ways - when sometimes even Jacob was not sure of said choices at first - only shows you how incredibly dedicated and talented he actually is
this show would not work if Shane was not a character that we all could fall in love with, he is the anchor of the show, the plot is revolves around him, he is the one we need to fall in love with first
it is not easy to play a character like Shane and to do it so well that you feel like this character could be out in the world right now and you are just seeing snippets of his life
we praise big bold and loud acting choices cause they are harder to ignore but a lot of the times actors making those actually reminds the audience that this is an actor making an informed decision to act a scene a certain way not a character behaving a certain way
anyone who sees autistic introverted Shane Hollander and says Hudson’s acting is flat and uninspired is a racist trying to minimise the sheer fucking talent Hudson possesses and has honed for years now
