hate how trigon is now so connected to christianity’s version of evil… the original backstory where he’s a being created from an alternate dimension’s expulsion of their impurities is such an interesting concept, idk why they would scrap it
In my ideal world, trigon’s origins would be a mashup of n52 where he’s essentially his own father + the original ntt run where he is the product of Azarath’s own doing + my own flavor that he was just a mass of Azarath’s dark energy that gained conciousness due to their magic because frankly, I disliked him having parents for the same reasons I disliked the sons of trigon arc. I just feel like it’s more impactful for trigon & raven to essentially be a species of two, which is also a basis for why he’s so obsessed with her & why she is so especially important to his plans
Also, I feel like Trigon & Raven’s association with being described as “demons” kind of doesn’t feel right since they feel more alien-adjascent to me. Again, in my ideal world, they’d be classified as eldritch beings or some other thing entirely, “demon / demoness” just fuels the christian themes which I’m not really a fan of
Yeah, I REALLY agree. I honestly think that the only reason his original backstory was scrapped was laziness. It's not like with some other things that were changed about Raven that are influenced by an adaptation or whatever, I think it was literally just that it would be just the slightest bit harder to introduce Trigon to new readers as an other dimensional entity so they just went "whatever he's from Hell", not caring that that makes him so much less interesting and also doesn't really make sense for him. Like, Trigon's whole thing is that he thinks he's the most supreme being in the universe/multiverse, there's no way he's cooperating at all with the other Hell Lords that already exist in established DC canon.
I think the great thing about his New 52 backstory is it's actually pretty easy to mash it together with his original backstory. Like, Azarath purges their evil -> it becomes some kind of entity that impregnates a random woman -> that woman gives birth to Trigon. I mean that was already basically his original backstory, the New 52 version just made him even more his own father (ignoring the Heart of Darkness stuff because I think it's stupid and not as good as the Azarath backstory).
I've never really thought of Trigon technically having a mom as messing with him and Raven being the only two members of their species because Trigon's mom wasn't whatever Trigon is at all. We don't really know what she was other than one of the last members of a dying alien race. Of course, Trigon kills her as soon as he's born, so there's no one left alive related to him other than Raven at any rate. I think the reason he's obsessed with her but didn't care about his mom at all is because his mom wasn't anything like him, but Raven is.
Raven and Trigon are technically aliens but I've never minded them being called demons. It really shouldn't be an issue, the word demon in general isn't specifically tied to Christian demons. Most cultures have legends about demons. I think that yeah, they're probably some kind of eldritch beings, but demon is the best word to describe them. It really shouldn't be a problem. The problem is that DC doesn't care about Raven's lore at all right now.
No but I seriously can't even fathom how painful Cassandra's existence has to be.
Like, we explore exactly how horrible witnessing death is for Cassandra, she reads the pain and the understanding and the regret on a dying body, she experiences death along with its victim on real time, she is the one human being who will never get desensitized to seeing a person dying, it is even worse for her than for anyone else, and she is surrounded by death
Her entire dedicated rogue's gallery (David Cain, Shiva, the Mad Dog, the Unburied, etc) makes a point of killing any and all by-standers and she always has to see it
Imagine the most traumatic death you have ever seen or heard about, imagine the grief or the disgust you felt when you first came across it, imagine experiencing that at the same time you experience the pain of the dying person and then imagine reliving that memory two, three, ten, twenty times every night and it's always like the first time and you never get used to it, and you'd be imagining a normal Tuesday for Cassandra as Batgirl
It's agonizing, my legs shake just thinking about it, I can't even picture getting up from my bed every morning with that curse over my head. And you're telling me Cassandra, this normal human without powers and with a support network that is lackluster on a good day, not only gets up every morning but lives with it? That she can manage a semblance of normality? How much willpower does it take? I am truly floored by how amazing Cassandra is.
I love how through Batgirl (2000) we just see Cass learn to be a semi-functioning "normal" girl and how she slowly goes from a life centred around justice and violence to a girl with so much wonder in her heart
Like girl starts out only knowing that she can be one thing: A good fighter. So obviously, to her, her own life outside of that means nothing if its non existent.
And at the same time, she doesn't really know what being a "regular person" means. She's had 2 identities: Weapon and Batgirl. In between both she was just surviving and it probably sucked rlly bad. She used to not picture a life outside of Cain, and now she cant picture a life outside of Batgirl. She literally has met like a total of 30 ppl in her life and talked to like 4.
But even with her very limited idea of normal social interactions she is unafraid of trying to show ppl love. She sees through their body language that the opposite of pain is love. But that kind of love requires an interaction outside of fighting.
She can't understand english much at the beginning but her initial drive to learn is not to be a better detective or batgirl related, its her love for people. For them to be happy. Its like a way of being useful.
But when others treat her in the same way, when others show her affection, she wants so bad to experience those connections over and over again. Mutual loving relationships are a new experience to her and she can't get enough of it.
She needs help on a case so what does she do? She breaks into Stephanie's room after meeting her like a single time because who knocks anyways?
wdym its not normal to knock ppl out when they're annoying? Like its convenient so y not?
She quickly makes her first friends but doesn't really know how to act or communicate but still manages to joke around in her own way. But they're happy, and she's happy, so it works.
She even watches crime shows and reality tv like guides on how to interact with people on missions and irl.
But gradually, all these small interactions let her become a person, for her to share small things about herself with others. Relationships let her be someone. Sharing thoughts, having conversations, working together, and anything that involves the small human pleasure of company become things she looks forward to.
And little by little, she starts doing things for herself. Like bro runs around Gotham, night into morning, holding onto a rose because its something thats hers and its pretty but she doesn't even know how plants work, but she's got the spirit. (yes ik that the rose is a randomly placed metaphor for cass having a bad work life balance but its so cute)
She starts going outside as a normal person instead of only for missions. She does normal girl things like going to restaurants but kind of not really cause wtf is a balanced diet.
Being able to share something about herself with someone and to sit in a mutual understanding of each other becomes easy. She lets herself be open to change and finds herself looking forward to living.
Wanting something for herself and being her own person is such a foreign concept to how she was raised but she loves it.
She experiments with everything to see what feels right. She starts flirting with boys, going to parties, dressing up in different styles of fashion. She wants to experience everything that girls do
She also learns that being a girl is different from what the other bats experience
Which sucks especially when she can read people's body language. As batgirl, in her scary ass outfit she was only terrifying and strong. But as a normal girl, people sometimes objectify her which has to be the oddest experience when u could kill someone with the blink of an eye.
Even her new father and brother see her differently than she sees them. Theres a weird social thing that comes with "girlness" that she doesn't understand, where girl things are supposed to be weak and have to be protected. But logically, shes like, yall gotta be protected from me be so forreal.
She dont gaf. Shes got bigger things to be ashamed about and being a girl is not one of them.
As she experiences the downsides of girlhood, she learns of the social expectations that come along. And instead of playing along blindly, she uses them to mess with ppl (and bruce). Cass understands more than anyone that social expectations and behaviours are just created performances that bring ppl together. So she chooses the ones she likes and completely rejects what she doesn't like.
and in the end she picks girly things like bold lipstick, fancy dresses, fashion, because she loves pretty things not because its whats expected. Social norms are like toys she can play with and put aside when they aren't fun.
Like she'll still get into a bar fight after eating the entire menu cause she can. Anyways ted talk over

i don't know if i am the best person to ask, i stopped reading batgirl 2000 somewhere in the middle of the cruise arc which is like, issue 40 or something :( but i will try!! for you mutual <3
ok so ah. i will start off with a hot take (maybe? idk if it's still a hot take). i honestly don't think cass is bruce's favorite 😭 in the sense that, she's not the one he's biased about. i mean remember when bruce found out she'd killed? and he was so deep in denial about it bc if he had to accept that she killed someone, then, well. yeah. he had a whole crisis about it.
but when i say that cass is her father's daughter (bruce not david) it's bc they're sooo alike. they know each other so well bc they're so alike. what really struck me in puckett's batgirl is that it's often bruce who enables cass' unhealthy behaviors, because they're his own. im rereading #23 right now (i wanted to check about bruce's reaction to cass killing) and he's literally the one who manages to explain cass' thinking & how she plans to deal with shiva. of course there's parts that are not entirely true and are probably projection instead, and babs is there to call out his analysis into question. but it's also true that a LOT of it is accurate & rings true for cass
and that's why i lowkey hate it when people say "cass should be batman" and then follow it up with "bc she's the best fighter among all of them!" like, no, that's honestly irrelevant. cass should be batman because she of all people understands the ideals & justice that the mantle stands for. like bruce says, she understands "the mission". cass should be batman because it's a believable thing for her to want (unlike dick, & correct me if im wrong but also unlike tim)
also, the fact that she knew batman before bruce wayne. she didn't even know who batman was before bruce wayne: murderer! her connection was forged to batman first. idk. i think there's a sort of poetry in that too 🫡
Random vocabulary lesson, because I'm tired of seeing people fuck this up.
"Invincible" means you never lose. "Invulnerable" means you're never hurt. "Immortal" means you never die. They are not synonyms; they are just similar concepts that often, but not always, go together.
You can be invincible and die falling down the stairs. Alexander the Great was invincible. He died of disease (or maybe poison).
And yes, that does mean everyone was using the [TITLE CARD] meme wrong, like, four years ago. Ya know what, I still see it, I can bitch about it if I want.
Debbie might have cried over Nolan in the season 1 finale. But the way they made her lose it is such an important thing for the writers to show. She's sad, she's devastated, and she's also angry.
This is a woman has repressed such immense sadness and anger. She held herself together and yet the moment she broke, her son immediately witnessed her breakdown.
The way she immediately turned away from Mark when it sunk to her that he's really there. In the flesh. It breaks my heart, because she doesn't want him to see her that way.
She didn't even want him to be near her at first. She could barely speak at all that she had to hold her hand out to stop him. And even though she did that, she let her other hand stay on her face to keep the tears covered from him.
And Mark sees her. He's sad too. And he knows that his mom is tired as well. He knows she needs him.
I love how much he loves his mom and that he knows her enough to understand what she needs.
He didn't stay standing up then put a comforting hand on her shoulder. He kneeled at her side and waited for her.
Debbie didn't need space.
Debbie didn't need words of reassurance.
She just needed someone to be with her, to be held and given a space where she can just be.
