Reconnect with Nature
Fall is one of my favorite seasons. The rich colors of nature are a delight for the eyes. Pumpkins are in season, weather is cooling down and the sun starts to set earlier in favor of the night, leading the way to Halloween. Now I can add an even more special event to this wonderful season: my wedding anniversary. On October 18, 2020, my husband and I celebrated our first anniversary.
We decided to take a trip to the province of Namur in Belgium. Probably few of you have heard of it. Belgium is my home country and I never really liked it or took the time to visit it. Let me tell you something: you can find beauty everywhere. These three days made me rediscover places I had visited as a child and whose beauty I had forgotten. Sometimes, you’re blind to the gems surrounding you or maybe you don’t take the time to look. Grass may be greener on the other side but if you take one minute to open your eyes, you may find wonders just outside your doorstep.
Reconnect with nature — this sentence never made so much sense to me than during this trip. Whether you like it or not, you are part of nature. And when you are an anxious person like me, it is very important for your health that you don’t spend every day confined between your concrete walls. Did you know that water in motion produce negative ions that increase serotonin levels, which boost our mood and energy and reduce stress? The simple sight of nature can help you cope with pain, anger and fear. This also contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure and heart rate. Isn’t it awesome?
I’m not going to explain the benefits of Mother Earth in further details, as many people already wrote better articles about it; I just wanted the post to be a little reminder for when you feel overwhelmed. You don’t need much; just take a walk in nature. You will feel better.
Without further ado, I will let you catch a glimpse of my vacation. If you’re reading this during your work hours and you don’t have the opportunity to go for a stroll right away maybe it will help you escape reality from your cubicle.

Withered
I’m dying a bit everyday That I spent away
From the land of my dreams From the goals I’m trying to reach
I feel trapped in a cage Everyone is expecting things from me That I can’t give
No one cares what I’m going through As long as I’m the image they hold on to
Sometimes I wish I was free Free of the noises surrounding me Free to do whatever pleases me Without being judged by people who don’t know me
I’m not being dramatic I’m very aware that I’m lucky But sometimes not enough to be happy
The little girl inside is screaming and crying She doesn’t want to give up But doesn’t know how to keep up
Maybe the future is worth the wait And I will end up at the right place
Jay Cummings
Fake Portrait N°1.
Jay Cummings was sitting on his porch, a beer in his right hand. He was gazing out at the vast emptiness in front of him: the field he had plowed his entire life. He was terrified just thinking of abandoning it. The farm once belonged to his father, and despite his desire for greatness, which was urging him as a teenager, he had come to his senses and taken over the family business.
Yes, he had dreamed of going to the big city, stars in his eyes, no career plan in sight, just the pure taste of adventure. Leaving Ashland was something he had wished for. But now that he would have to leave it, he wasn’t so sure anymore. That’s all he had ever known.
What would become of him? It was not a question he allowed to ask himself. He had never been the weak kind. The so awaited adventure was scaring him though. The crisis had never hit Ashland so badly. This disease was spreading like the plague. He thought this kind of things only happened in movies although he was not really a movie buff and hadn’t watched a lot of them throughout his life.
At this exact moment, sipping what might be his last drink, he was praying he would live long enough to tell his future kids. That was just a hope he had while the world was coming to an end.

HOW FOOD IS RULING MY LIFE.
SPOILER ALERT!!! SUPER FOOD SPOTS AROUND THE WORLD IF YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO READ MORE THAN 3 SENTENCES. Or you can jump right away to the cool tips but that would make me sad. Not that you care, of course.
Food is part of every human being’s life. But is it that big of a deal for everyone as it is for me? I don’t know if I would call myself a “foodie” but I sure have a passionate relationship with food. When I’m hungry, my brain does not function very well. I can’t think clearly, I’m not efficient but most of all, I’m in such a bad mood. Until I eat, I can’t be asked anything. My attitude tends to frighten those around me. I’m just kidding (not that much). I have no control over my tummy! My brain is not in charge here, hence the article’s title. I don’t know if some of you can relate. I hope so…
The same applies in the morning. Until I have had my cup of coffee and had enjoyed my favorite meal of the day: breakfast; I’m not here for anyone.
As Kitty Forman would say: “Honey, this is breakfast. Don’t ask me things.”
Speaking of which, brekkie is truly different in every country but I like them all, I mean, for those I’ve tried. By the way, the guy who invented the “all day breakfast” thing is my hero. Those places are heaven on earth. I’ve got some favorite spots around the world that I’m going to share with you. First of all, Bakers & Roasters in Amsterdam, let me tell you their pancakes with bacon and bananas are to die for and so is their coffee. Then, if you are in L.A., be sure to stop by Blu Jam Café. Your mouth will thank you for their crunchy French toast. Morning Glory’s Soufflé Pancakes in San Diego is also worth a try. The pink atmosphere, the food and the cocktails will bring joy to your Saturday Brunch outing. And finally, I like to go to IHOP. Yes, I do. Their pancakes and burgers won’t disappoint you. It’s the kind of place you find pretty much everywhere on the road and it fulfills my American road trips fantasies, Road 66, diner style and whatnot.
I kind of plan my vacations around food spots. I don’t “kind” of do it, actually. I do it compulsively. My itineraries are based on breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. I love to try everything local as long as it is not too weird. I do have my limits.
Food is culturally interesting. You can learn a lot by breaking bread with locals. For example, in the south of France, from my experience, you will start with some salad. Main course will always be accompanied by some fresh “baguette” and there will always be a cheese board and some wine to finish up your meal.
When someone invites you over in Italy, be sure to free up your afternoon because you might spend a few hours at his or her table. Italians always cook the most delicious feast! Fresh homemade pasta will certainly be on the menu.
My darling Australian friends, I often think of you. Cheese and crackers fill your appetizer’s table. Your Sunday roast with gravy and tender vegetables reminds me of a fall day when I curl up on the couch watching a movie with my beloved. You also have weird food habits. First Vegemite and then vegemite pizza? Really? What the hell Ossie people?
Wandering the streets in Bangkok and eating off the sidewalk is an authentic and very suspenseful adventure. Thai Street food is like a box of chocolates you never know what you’re gonna get nor if your stomach will get through it.
If I had to rank my favorite food in the world this would be my top 6:
Pizza
Burgers and fries
Dumplings
Pancakes with bacon and gallons of maple syrup of course
Avocado on toast with poached eggs
Pasta of any kind
Yes, six is a weird number for a ranking but I couldn’t bring myself to delete an item from this list. It also makes me feel unique in a way. Anyway. For your taste buds, I am going to share my top 3 best places in the world for every element above.
Best Pizze
Via Napoli, Sydney (La vera pizza napoletana)
Di Fara Pizza, Brooklyn (New York Style)
Pizza d’Asporto, Yarraville Melbourne
Best Burgers
In-N-Out Burger
Whataburger
Shake Shack
Best Dumplings
Yank Sing, San Francisco
Jade Restaurant, Austin
Hutong Dumpling Bar, Melbourne
Best Pancakes
Bakers & Roasters, Amsterdam
Morning Glory, San Diego
IHOP
Best Pasta
My grandpa’s pasta. Italian roots oblige. Actually, I have never eaten amazing pasta except in Italy but pasta’s always better at home, especially when you have family recipes from your great grandparents.
Pasta al Cinghiale, Il Boschetto Calvi dell'Umbria
Pastificio Guerra, Roma
What are your top 6 favorite foods in the world? I’m curious. I love discovering new places. Maybe this will help me choose my next destination!
If you’d like me to share more, I’d be happy to. Name your destination in the comments and maybe I’ll have a suggestion. I’ve visited more countries than I’ve shared in this article so don’t hesitate!
THE KEY TO GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER: STOP SCROLLING YOUR LIFE OUT.
If you’re like me, you are very concerned about what people think about you. You don’t handle conflicts very well and you want to be liked even if it means not speaking your mind.
You suffer in silence and you ponder every minute you’ve interacted with someone. You relive the situation on a loop with different outcomes and different scenarios. Rare are people who can say exactly what they mean at the right moment. Most of the time, they tell themselves “I should have done this or I should have said that”. But even knowing that you don’t have control over what happened, you can’t help it. Not being able to speak right away creates feelings of anger and anxiety so you might as well let it go.
And you know what? I’m going to share something on this subject: Often, the dude you’ve chatted with doesn’t even remember the conversation and doesn’t care at all! I tell you this to release you from your internal struggles. We care too much about people’s opinion while they only care about themselves.
Last night, I went to a birthday party and I told someone about a project of mine. When I came home, I started thinking that it was too soon to talk about it because I didn’t know if my project would work and I didn’t want the person to think I was bragging about it. What if the project doesn’t even come to life? I realize writing that, how twisted it is. I got all worked up about it. A few days later, I ran into this man again only to realize he already forgot what I told him. He kept rattling on stuff I already told him I was not interested in anymore as I was switching careers.
I analyzed the situation and came to the following conclusions:
No one actually gives a shit if it doesn’t involve him or her in some way. It doesn’t mean they don’t care about you but they’re more preoccupied with what is bugging them. You probably already know this if you went to business school. When I took marketing classes, they taught me that we should not worry about selling a product but rather try to make a friend. And it implies to let the client talk 99% of the meeting. It is basically the same in life. Either that or I just have bad friends...
Why do I act like that? I figured I get this teeny tiny neurosis because I come from a small town where everyone is judgy and scan people from head to toe. It is probably out of boredom though.
I also ruminated this quote: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” I don’t want to be judged because no one really knows me but on the other hand, I judge people on insignificant details. So, I try not to do that anymore. You never know what individuals are going through. You are not in their shoes, although, you can always try to understand and learn something from their experience. Maybe by doing so, I will be able to let go of my anticipatory fear of hypercritical human beings. I’ll be able to tell myself that he or she is like me, open-minded about whatever others are dealing with. I don’t know if it makes sense but I think by starting right there, we’re on the right track.
Even if I don’t have the key to stop caring about what people think or to stop comparing myself to others, I’m not going to let my past and background determine who I am and the choices I make. I would love not to give a fuck, seriously. But let me tell you something, I feel much better if I’m not scrolling Instagram looking at others’ life. Which, most of the time, ask them more special effects than a Star Wars movie (oopsie, judgy I am).
I also used to scroll down pictures of old high school acquaintances. It doesn’t make you feel good about yourself believe me! So one day, I quit it all. I deleted my Instagram app. Instead of being interested in other people’s life I started being more interested by what I was doing with mine and got my shit together. Bold move dude!
Since then, as being present on different social media is kind of mandatory, I created a new account with some improvements. I don’t follow people from my past anymore, only from my present. You should try it. It’s liberating. I also set a 5-minute daily reminder on Instagram and Facebook to not exceed the dose of social media I want to inject myself.
From what you have read in the last paragraphs, the application of these little things in your daily routine will surely free you from being constantly caught up in this torment. You’ll have more time for yourself and a clearer mind to expand your creativity.
So chill out, my friends.
Don’t trust it, don’t listen to it and don’t rely on what your thoughts are telling you. Trust me; my consciousness is speaking right now and it knows better. Well, I hope so...
Hire Me.
Have you ever noticed how untrue a resume or cover letter can be? Smile if you never lied on your resume or cover letter! Who looks happy now, huh?
Why do we do that? Why can’t we stay true to ourselves? Why do we need to obey the rules and be the person someone else wants us to be? Why do we need to comply and to abide by the rules to get a job? Isn’t someone hiring you because you stand out? So why are they all looking for the same clichéd skills?
I feel employers have really high expectations regarding future team members. I totally understand their motives though. I would also want the best candidates for my company.
But when I read a job offer, I go from being enthusiastic to feeling like shit and to not applying. I get the impression they’re looking for at least two different people, but they can only afford one of them.
I’m not even mentioning this computer program that scans your resume and save your profile only if you have keywords listed in the job posting. Quite skeptic about this one! Top Resume offered me to run my resume through this ATS scan and what stood out were my motion design skills, which I barely have. My resume title is “Video Producer” and it wasn’t even mentioned. It’s not trustworthy at all! I wonder how many times my resume has been rejected even before someone read it because the layout didn’t match a computer program.
I find it hard to meet the requirements there are in my profession. So what do I do? Do I tell myself I’m not good enough and give up? No I don’t, instead, I lie. But, once I will have sold my soul, will I be able to live up to the expectations?
To all the employers out there, wouldn’t you like to hear the truth for once?Wouldn’t you like to interview a candidate who might not fulfill your every dream but who’s honest?
So I had this idea to write a real cover letter.
I realize it might not be the perfect time to criticize the job market but why not? I know we all do our best considering the circumstances but I’m on the market and I wonder all these questions so I bet I’m not the only one.
I gathered some common skills I found in job advertisements I applied for and answered each one truthfully.
So here it goes,
Dear X team,
I am reaching out because I just read your job description for X on LinkedIn and I felt very excited and highly qualified for the position!
Also, let’s not kid ourselves I need the money.
I might not be your ideal match for the job (you have really high expectations, which I understand. I am a perfectionist myself and I’m not saying that to brag. Actually, quite the contrary, it can really slow me down sometimes) but I will work my ass off because I like winning and I’m a bad loser. If you’re worth it, I won’t let you down; I’m a very loyal person (my astrological sign is cancer just so you know who you’re dealing with).
You’re looking for someone with good communication skills. What does that mean? I always feel it’s a big deal, but really, if I can speak clearly and simply is that okay?
As far as being a team player, I’m used to it since I’ve worked on numerous short films and dealt with many departments. I’m not really a people person though. Assholes are everywhere but I’ll never engage in office gossips and I will always be respectful of everyone’s work. I thought it was worth mentioning. I’m quite an introvert but once you get to know me I’m really fun.
As a video producer, I work well in a fast-paced environment but I would love not to make a burnout. If it is so fast-paced, I suggest we do some planning and “to do lists” otherwise I might get completely stressed out.
I am a very organized person. I need to get things done ahead of schedule. That being said, that statement only works when I have a deadline otherwise my procrastination monkey (ref. Tim Urban) might take the lead.
You need a problem-solver. Well, I can tell you from experience that when you erase the entire content of a SD card, believe me, it’s the kind of mistake that lead you to the very resourceful person inside of you.
Your place seems really cool and all and I would really love to impress you by knowing a lot about your business and your work culture but I can’t really tell since I’ve never been to your offices. Maybe you could invite me over for an interview so I can make a better idea for myself and see if I can fit!
Thank you for taking the time to read my verbal diarrheoa. I hope it will catch your attention even in a bad way.
Best,
Charlotte
My article is supposed to be humorous. I don’t say every job have the same requirements. It is mostly referring to video producing jobs and only from a hundred of ads I have read and applied for.
I wanted to write that article because it is overwhelming trying to fit into the mold and to follow all the rules society expects you to follow. You’re not alone so don’t give up!
Most importantly, do something you love! Regardless if you succeed or not, at least, you’ll be happy.
P.S.: If someone needs help to write a cover letter, for your sake and the one of your future employer, I suggest you seek advice elsewhere.
Cheers, my friends!
Note on the picture: Me and 6 words that honestly describe me. But can you really tell who you’re dealing with from some social media pictures and a few words on a resume? I’ll leave you to that...
The Day I Found Out Video Stores Were Not Dead.
I was wandering around Austin, Texas when I saw it: a video store. Located on Airport Blvd, it was waiting for me. I was overcome with euphoria and nostalgia. I felt like a kid at Toys “R” Us.
I entered and there I was, transported back to the nineties, early 2000’s; where “Clerks” meets “Be Kind Rewind”. Joy. Happiness. The employee at the counter was the exact image I was picturing myself of someone working at a video store. He was a perfect cliché of the movie geek with a twist of a Gus Van Sant character. I wondered if they hired him by coincidence or if it was purely deliberate. I passed him and I started noticing every detail of the place from the old movie posters hanging on the wall, to every genre duly organized in sections. “Lord of the Rings” was playing on an old CRT television, full of chromatic aberrations, which was giving a green and purple complexion to Gandalf and Frodo.
I walked every aisle of the store to find some hidden gems here and there. There even was a section on Vampires, my favorite horror movies.
Then, I walked up the stairs, because, yes, there is a second floor where every movie is sorted by famous directors’ names and I strolled to the rich foreign films area filled with titles I’ve never even heard of. It was really a blast for a film buff like me. I sure have some knowledge but, still, they were able to surprise me.
I lost track of time but my rumbling tummy reminded me that it was time to go. I spent one hour and a half in this magical place without even realizing it.
Did I end up renting a DVD? Sure thing, I even rented three of them. My first pick was an animated series from the nineties created by Al Jean and Mike Reiss (best known from their work on “the Simpsons”) called “The Critic”. It follows Jay Sherman, a New York film critic, who dislikes almost every movie he is reviewing. Quite funny, an underrated cartoon that went under the radar.
Then “Eyes of Laura Mars”, a thriller from the seventies written by John Carpenter, a bit sluggish for my taste but it will meet De Palma’s fan club expectations (even if it’s not directed by De Palma).
And lastly: “Jaws”. It seemed an obvious choice for a movie night. I had the perfect trio. I always like having a comedy on hand to brighten the mood after I watched a horror movie.
That done, I ended up paying quite a bunch of money though totally worth it. I’ve been missing this experience and adventure a lot since streaming platforms have come to light. I understand that for the same price as a Netflix subscription you only get three DVD’s and you gotta move your ass and drive but to get things straight, if I told you I had two tickets for a baseball game would you chose to watch it on your TV screen? Maybe… but it wouldn’t bring the same thing.
Video stores remind me of my childhood when, every weekend, I went out with my parents to pick and discovered some amazing movies I will never forget. It’s like going to the movies, it’s a whole ceremonial, buying your tickets, eating your bucket of popcorn and drinking Coke while enjoying the first minutes of legendary jingles from movie Majors, being completely caught in this big rectangle, surrounded by nothing else but this dark room (and, sometimes, annoying chewing noises). Online streaming on my couch will never bring that same sentiment. Even if I enjoy it too, it is not thrilling. I also noticed that, most of the time, when watching Netflix and whatnot, I end up tired of scrolling and I always select something out of spite.
Well, anyway, on my way back home, I noticed at the corner of the street, a little donut shop called “Mrs. Johnson’s Bakery”. Homemade donuts, everyday, since 1948. The perfect time to stop by is at the opening, seven thirty p.m. (yes, it’s quite peculiar), when the donuts are warm and soft. I bought a few of them and I was packed for the perfect evening!
How to Deal with Anxiety.
This title may not seem news to you but I am going to share my story and how I dealt with it and I hope it can help you along the way.
If you read until the end you’ll find out why I chose this picture and also some dope advice.
In January 2018, I started having panic attacks. Actually, I remember the exact date, January 20th 2018. The night before, I went out with some friends and I drank a lot, which had not happened for a long time, and it totally triggered my anxiety.
I have always been an anxious person. It started out when I was a kid. At the time, I just didn’t put the words “panic attacks” on it. My parents are probably the less anxious people on the planet, so, except telling me that everything was going to be okay, they didn’t have any other solution in mind.
My anxiety went away eventually because I am a resourceful person and I was always able to find the source of the problem and fix it.
But in 2018, for the first time, I couldn’t. For a control freak like me, I felt overwhelmed and completely lost. I had it all, the puking, my whole body shaking, tiredness, depression, etc... I went through some dark times my friends, I can tell you that.
It kept going for two months before I got my shit together and decided to go and see a shrink. News flash! I had what they call an “identity crisis”.
Meaning: I didn’t know who I was anymore and I was having trouble “finding myself”. It was so weird for me to hear that because I was always so sure about everything. I always knew what I wanted and suddenly, I didn’t anymore.
Your question: How did that happened?
In a few words, I was in my first real relationship (I’m still in this relationship and I’m happily married). In our first years, my boyfriend and I were spending all of our time together, we were working together and as we didn’t have a lot of money, we didn’t go out much or do a lot of extra activities. I was in fusional relationship that led me to the loss of my own person.
During my therapy sessions, I learned that having a healthy relationship means there has to be 3 people in it: your beloved, yourself and the couple. You have to take time for yourself. Don’t forget that.
Then, career wise, I was struggling as a freelance camera operator, working on dull projects and I wasn’t sure I wanted to pursue a career in the movie industry anymore. I thought maybe the job didn’t suit me anymore, which also led to my identity crisis. But I didn’t know what else to do…
I am still having trouble finding myself but I’m working on it and I’m getting better at it. There’s nothing a few therapy sessions and a good book can’t fix!
Now that you know the story, more or less, I have some advice I want to share with you. Maybe you didn’t even bother to read until the interesting part. Shame! Just kidding. I would have stopped reading too.
Well, hopefully, some of you did stick with me and it might help you on your way to recovery.
First of all, talk to someone. No matter what your folks or friends or whoever thinks. It is normal to get help. If psychiatrists exist, there’s a reason to it!
You are not fucking crazy believe me! Your mind has just a weird way of showing it. It is worth it! It might not even be a therapist. Open up to someone, they could give you an outside opinion on what you’re going through. Sometimes you’re to close to the problem to see the big picture. You need a camera assistant to help you focus (sorry, terrible camera joke).
For example, my shrink told me there is no such thing as certainty. Life is change. Let it go. Worries tend to shrink when you walk towards them.
Then, I would strongly recommend that book “The Anxiety Solution: A Quieter Mind, a Calmer You.” which helped me a lot. I do not earn anything advertising it. It just really helped me.
Some of the following advice comes from this book.
· Quit drinking alcohol (I didn’t say forever), I assure you it helps.
· A rested you is a calmer you.
Most of the time, when I get panic attacks symptoms (yes, it still happens sometimes but I stop it right there!), I ask myself: Am I tired? If the answer is yes, I know the problem is solved.
· Quit junk food and sugar (not forever, and I know a good burger can cheer you up).
It may seem easier said than done. I am a junk food lover so I feel you my friend but if you eat healthy and early in the evening, you’ll soon notice the difference. You’ll find that an early digestion will help you sleep better, and therefore, you know the rest.
· Take a walk. Reconnect with nature.
When I have trouble sleeping, I think of a sunflower gently swept by the wind and it has a calming effect on me. It doesn’t have to be a sunflower; it just has a special meaning for me.
I won’t go into the meditation part because it is a whole other level. And if you’re like me, you’ll probably find it overwhelming at first but it is worth it too.
Last but not least, a therapist once told me this: When you’re having a panic attack, what should settle you down is that your body can’t keep up with the pace. At some point, when you will reach the apex of your panic attack, the only way back is to go down. So even if your mind can’t stop it, your body will. It has enlightened me!
You are strong. You are whole. No matter what you think; it’s in there. Remember, it is just thoughts!
And breathe my friends, breathe…
There is an app, it’s free, it’s called “Oak”; you have meditation but also breathing exercises to calm the fuck down!
So cheer up my friends!
No matter what happens you’ll handle it!
If you have any question, I’m here to help.
We should take action on a daily basis, not only when something is brought to our attention.

You and I will stand proud, On the ruins of our past, The foundations of our future And the happiness of our present.
Charlotte Burion
Inner Dialogue for when you feel swamped.
I have this great sadness in me.
I can only focus on the annoying details; giving the ones who hurt me the power to hurt me even more.
The closest to you are often the ones who can’t be happy for you.
Hatred and jealousy, those words should be banned from anyone’s vocabulary.
Sometimes, it’s hard to always be torn between these two words because you have no choice but to mingle with these people.
You might think: “No one should let people like this darken one’s life. Shut them out, shut them out.”
But, I can’t…
I keep this anger and nourish it with resentment.
But, I shouldn’t.
I should feel sorry for them.
Because, I am the light and they are the darkness.
While they are trying to drag me down, I keep going.
And, someday, they will be so far behind; they will fade away,
As the memories their presence holds.
They’ll fade away.
I will realize, it was inside of me the whole time,
The good moments;
Shining through the darkness,
Shining through the disappointments.
And you and I will stand,
So proud,
On the ruins of our past,
The foundations of our future
And the happiness of our present.
