Our specially trained pediatric experts recognize that families are our partners, which is why we deliver family-centered care. There is a lot to parenting, and no one knows your kids like you do. Sometimes you need a quick tip, a new idea, and another approach. Our experts are here to answer your questions. The following experts have contributed to Ask the Experts sessions: Joan Bothner, MD Chief Medical Officer, Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO) Professor, Department of Pediatrics Associate Dean, Clinical Affairs at Children’s Hospital Colorado University of Colorado School of Medicine (UCSOM) Dr. Joan Bothner is the Chief Medical Officer for Children’s Hospital Colorado, consistently ranked one of the top children’s hospitals in the nation. In her role, Dr. Bothner oversees the medical staff, and she is intricately involved in strategic clinical program development, clinical operations, research operations, relationships with the UCSOM and its faculty as well as with community providers and partners, and she is responsible for the assurance of the delivery of high quality, effective and efficient patient care. Dr. Bothner joined Children’s Colorado in 1990 as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and as the Medical Director of the CHCO Emergency Department. Since joining Children’s, she has served as the Section Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine for the University of Colorado School of Medicine, the Medical Director of Ambulatory Services at CHCO, the Associate Medical Director of University Physicians, Inc., and as the Vice President of Physician Services for Ambulatory and Network Operations for CHCO, She assumed the role of Chief Medical Officer in 2007. After earning her medical degree and completing her pediatric residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston TX, Dr. Bothner discovered that pediatric emergency medicine was her true passion. After a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship in Akron, Ohio, she relocated to Colorado, and developed the emergency medicine program at CHCO. She has served on the Executive Committee for Pediatric Emergency Medicine for the American Academy of Pediatrics, as the Chair of the Mile High Regional Emergency Medicine and Trauma Advisory Council. She has numerous publications in the field of pediatric emergency medicine. As an emergency medicine physician who routinely interacted with hospital operations and executive administration, early in her career she developed a keen interest in understanding and balancing the interests and critical needs of the medical staff, faculty, and hospital administration. With the goal of alignment and achievement of mutual strategies and objectives, she has continued to focus her career within the institutions with which she is affiliated on that aim, as well as continuing to practice emergency medicine. Richard Boles, PhD Dr. Richard Boles is a pediatric psychologist with specialization in child behavior and nutrition. His overall program of study examines environmental influences on early childhood weight development. Building on a foundation of cognitive-behavioral clinical training, guided by evidence-based treatments, Dr. Boles has sought to understand how modifiable environmental factors impact child and parent behaviors related to healthy growth and development. He is currently funded by the NIH to develop and test obesity interventions for preschool aged children and their families. Dr. Boles also provides clinical care for weight management at Children's Hospital Colorado. Anna L. Bruckner, MD Dr. Anna L. Bruckner is Associate Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and practices pediatric dermatology at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She received her BA and MD from Northwestern University, and then completed residencies in Pediatrics and Dermatology at the University of Colorado, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Dermatology at the University of California San Francisco. She has been practicing pediatric dermatology since 2004 and served as the director of pediatric dermatology at Stanford University from 2004 to 2011. Dr. Bruckner is dedicated to improving the care of children with skin disease through outstanding patient care, teaching, and clinical research. Her academic interests include genetic skin disorders, particularly epidermolysis bullosa (EB), and educating pediatricians about skin disease. Melissa Buchholz, Psy.D Dr. Melissa Buchholz is a Senior Instructor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in the Harris Program for Child Development and Infant Mental Health. She is the state coordinator for the Healthy Steps for Young Children program, a home visitation program that operates out of pediatric primary care. Dr. Buchholz's research and clinical interests are in improving access to care for young children, integrating mental health into pediatric primary care settings, and building comprehensive systems of care for young children and their families. Dr. Buchholz works actively toward health promotion and prevention for young children, advocating at both state and local levels. Maya Bunik, MD MSPH, FABM, FAAP Dr. Maya Bunik is an Associate Professor at University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and medical director of primary care at Children’s Hospital Colorado. In 2006 she completed a two-year Primary Care Research Fellowship that included a Master of Science in Public Health. In terms of breastfeeding research, she led a CDC funded study using telephone support and culturally-enhanced scripted guidelines to support breastfeeding in low-income mothers. Her qualitative study on combination feeding in Latinas ‘los dos’ was cited in the Surgeon General’s Call to Action on Breastfeeding, January 2011. In addition, Dr. Bunik has been active in breastfeeding curriculum development and continues to run the breastfeeding curriculum for pediatrics residents in her home institution as well as the elective for 4th year medical students. She has received excellent feedback on her first book that came out this last fall, Breastfeeding Telephone Triage and Advice published by the American Academy of Pediatrics as a helpful resource for physician practices and anyone providing advice for breastfeeding. Currently, it is being distributed to over 100 US hospitals as part of their WHO Baby Friendly Health Initiative. Dr. Bunik has been an invited speaker at numerous conferences most recently in Washington,DC, Fairbanks,Alaska and Kentucky. Antonia Chiesa, MD Dr. Antonia Chiesa is currently an attending physician with the Kempe Child Protection Team at Children’s Hospital Colorado and has an academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics with the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She is board certified in Child Abuse Pediatrics. Claire Chiu Claire Chiu is a clinical dietitian working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children's Hospital Colorado. She works with the neonatal team to ensure the delivery of optimal nutrition to high-risk newborns. Claire previously worked with adult patients including expecting mothers and providing nutrition assessment and education on various chronic diseases. Susan Crane, Psy.D. Dr. Susan Crane is a licensed psychologist specializing in pediatric sleep medicine at the Children’s Hospital Colorado. In this role, Dr. Crane helps to train children/infants to sleep independently through the night; provides nightmare treatments; teaches children to tolerate CPAP [mask & air pressure to treat nighttime breathing problems]; treats insomnia; and helps to adjust circadian rhythm disorders [when the “internal clock” has people sleeping at undesired times]. Dr. Crane also has extensive experience providing play therapy and families counseling for children and families with trauma histories. Jeff Dolgan, PhD Jeff Dolgan, Ph.D, is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and has been at Children's Hospital Colorado since 1986. He currently serves as a therapist with the General Intensive Outpatient Program, providing treatment to teens and their parents in weekly groups. Dr. Dolgan collaborates with the G-IOP team. Dr. Dolgan is semi-retired but has been Chief of Psychology at Children's Hospital Colorado for approximately 20 years and Director of Psychology Internship Training. He served as Director of Extern Training until July 2012. Dr. Dolgan was Chair of the Board of Psychologist Examiners, Department of Regulatory Agencies for 8 years until 2007. He was Presidential Advisor on the Board of the Colorado Psychological Association. Dr. Dolgan was elected to the Medical Board of Children's Hospital Colorado for a third term in April 2013. He received an Outstanding Service Award from the Medical Board of Children's Hospital Colorado in 2008. Dr. Dolgan is a frequent media contributor for Children's Hospital Colorado and provides lay information on child/adolescent/parenting issues and many other topics. Dr. Dolgan received his B.A. degree from Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio and his M.A. and Ph.D from The Ohio State University. He completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Psychology at The University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dena Dunn, Psy.D Dr. Dunn is an Instructor in the Irving Harris Program for Infant Mental Health and Child Development in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She is a bilingual licensed clinical psychologist practicing at the Children’s Hospital Colorado. Her clinical and research interests focus on child development, early childhood mental health, and global health. She is also interested in integrating behavioral health services into medical settings, breastfeeding support, and Latino mental health. Dr. Dunn is the Director of Fussy Baby Latina, a branch of the Fussy Baby Network Colorado, providing support to families with fussy babies in the first year of life. Monica Federico, MD Dr. Federico has developed the expertise to consult on a pediatric program for high risk asthma over seven years in hospital and community settings working with patient with asthma and providers who care for asthma. She is a pediatric pulmonologist and she created an outpatient program for high risk asthma at Children’s Hospital Colorado 7 years ago. Dr. Federico has been director of the asthma program for 6 years. The outpatient asthma program started 7 years ago with 1 provider and 300 patients and has grown to 4 providers and over 3000 patients. The data from the program shows significant improvement in asthma control in patients seen two to three times in the clinic. They recently added further support including social work and nutrition and we are planning to further expand to case-management. Participation in this research project will inform the care of the patients with asthma at Children’s Colorado and the expansion of the asthma program. In 2005, Dr. Federico was asked to consult on a community-based program created to improve the care of children with asthma in 23 private pediatric offices in metro Denver. Through that program, they created a registry of patients, educated the providers, and evaluated the data. They found significant improvements in emergency department visits and hospitalizations across the clinics. Based upon this data, she designed a recall system for high-risk asthma and recently submitted a grant for an enhanced asthma care program. Janice Fordyce, MS, RD Janice works with the cystic fibrosis team within the Breathing Institute at Children's Hospital Colorado. She specializes in nutritional therapy within pulmonary disease, but also has a background in eating disorders, weight management, and diabetes care. Joe Grubenhoff, MD Dr. Joe Grubenhoff is a Colorado Native who received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Colorado College in 1997. He received his MD from St. Louis University in Missouri in 2002 and completed his general pediatrics residency (2005) and emergency medicine fellowship (2009) at the University of Colorado/Children’s Hospital of Colorado. Dr. Grubenhoff has worked in the Children's Hospital Colorado Emergency Department as an attending physician since 2009 and his research focuses on concussions in children. He is also the father of a 7 year old son and 9 year old daughter and enjoys road and mountain biking in his spare time Jennifer Hagman, M.D. Dr. Hagman is an associate professor of Psychiatry with the University of Colorado, School of Medicine. She is board certified in both Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and General Psychiatry. She has been the medical director of the Eating Disorder Program at Children’s Hospital Colorado since 1993 and has integrated evidence based clinical approaches and a comprehensive research component into the program, which is provides a family centered approach to parent supported nutrition and recovery. She is also the medical director of medical – psychiatric clinical services at Children’s Hospital Colorado (Psychiatric Emergency Service, Consultation Liaison Service, Medical Day Treatment and the Neuropsychiatric Special Care Unit). She is a past president of the Colorado Psychiatric Society, Colorado Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Society and Eating Disorder Professionals of Colorado. She is the chair of the CPS legislative committee and active in legislative issues related to access to care, mental health and the practice of medicine. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DFAPA) and a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the Academy of Eating Disorders (AED) and the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA). She has published many research articles and chapters and is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in children and adolescents. Ann Halbower, MD Dr. Ann Halbower is the Director of Pediatric Sleep Research at Children’s Hospital Colorado. A Professor of Pediatrics, she teaches pediatric sleep medicine internationally. Her research includes the effect of obstructive sleep apnea on the developing brain, the effect of Austism spectrum disorders on sleep, prevention measures for unexpected infant death, and the effect of sleep deprivation in doctors on medical errors. You can find her publications in Google or Pub Med. Michelle Henry, MPH, RD Michelle Henry is a clinical dietitian for Children's Hospital Colorado, primarily in the Digestive Health Institute. She has 7 years’ experiences as a pediatric dietitian and has special interests in food allergy and eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases. Douglas K. Novins, M.D. Dr. Douglas K. Novins is the Cannon Y. & Lyndia Harvey Chair in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Chair of the, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Children’s Hospital Colorado. His is also Professor of Psychiatry and Community & Behavioral Health at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Novins’ expertise is in the areas of adolescent substance-related problems and traumatic experiences, particularly among American Indian and Alaska Native youth. Orthopedics Team The Sports Medicine Program for Young Athletes is housed within Children’s Colorado's Orthopedics Institute, recognized as one of the top 10 pediatric orthopedic programs in the country by U.S. News and World Report. Its team includes several sports medicine specialists who are specially trained and qualified to care for young competitive athletes, as well as pediatric rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, orthopedic and orthopedic surgery specialists.Through the Sports Medicine Program for Young Athletes, children and teens also gain direct access to all of the pediatric experts and resources available through Children’s Colorado, including its Concussion Program. Daniel H. Reirden, M.D. Dr. Daniel H. Reirden is an Attending Physician in the Sections of Adolescent Medicine and Infectious Disease at Children's Hospital Colorado, and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Reirden received his Bachelor’s of Science degree from Fordham University and his M.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed a combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency program at the University of Connecticut and then pursued fellowship training in Adolescent Medicine at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Reirden is board certified in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and Adolescent Medicine. He is the medical director of the Children’s Hospital Colorado Youth and Young Adult HIV program. He is the Co-Principal Investigator of the Adolescent Trials Network at the University of Colorado, one of 14 sites in the nation that is focused on conducting research in primary and secondary prevention, therapeutic interventions and complications of HIV in youth between the ages of 12 and 25. Dr. Reirden is currently providing medical care to gender non-conforming and transgender children and youth from all over the Rocky Mountain Region. Dr. Reirden is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a Member of the American College of Physicians, a Member of the Society for Adolescent Medicine, and a credentialed HIV Specialist and member of The American Academy of HIV Medicine. Laura Retzer Laura Retzer is the Program Coordinator for Children’s Hospital Colorado’s Bikes for Life program. She has been working at Children’s Colorado for 2.5 years in the Children’s Health Advocacy Institute doing injury prevention and healthy kids programming. Molly Richards, MD Dr. Molly Richards is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and is a board certified pediatrician with a subspecialty in adolescent medicine. She has been practicing at Children’s Hospital Colorado for four years and has a specific interest in adolescent gynecology and contraception. Harley Rotbart, MD Dr. Rotbart is a Denver native and has been a pediatric specialist in Colorado for the past 30 years. Named to Best Doctors in America every year since 1996, he has more than 175 medical and scientific publications. No Regrets Parenting is his 3rd book for parents. Harley serves on the Advisory Boards of Parents Magazine and Parents.com. Schmitt is Medical Director of the After-Hours Call Center at Children’s Hospital Colorado that covers calls for over 400 pediatricians throughout Colorado and Wyoming, and has been a board-certified pediatrician for more 40 years. He is also Director of the Encopresis-Enuresis clinic at Children's Hospital Colorado. Dr. Schmitt is the creator of the first self-triage iPhone app and has written more than one-hundred articles for fellow pediatricians, as well as the Pediatric Telephone Protocols software used by over four-hundred-and-fifty hospitals nationwide. He is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Schmitt has received numerous awards for his work, including the American Academy of Pediatrics Education Award in 2004. He and his wife spend as much time as possible with their children and 8 grandchildren. Dwayne Smith Dwayne Smith is the Injury Prevention Manager in the Children’s Health Advocacy Institute at Children’s Hospital Colorado. In this role he serves as coordinator for Safe Kids Colorado, and for several other pediatric injury prevention initiatives. He has over 23 years of experience as a Health Educator, including the past 18 in a variety of injury prevention roles in the public and non-profit sectors. He is one of the nation’s original and longest serving Child Passenger Safety Technicians, and is credentialed as a Master Certified Health Education Specialist. Dwayne earned his B.S.Ed. and M.Ed. in Health Promotion & Behavior from the University of Georgia. Mindy Solomon, PhD Dr. Solomon is an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado. She is currently the Clinical Program Director for the Eating Disorders Program at Children’s Hospital Colorado and has specialized in child/adolescent and family assessment and treatment since 2000. Dr. Solomon is on the Board of Directors for the International Studies of Gifted Development and has ongoing collaboration with the Gifted Development Center in Denver. Dr. Solomon has experience and expertise in the areas of assessment of gifted abilities, gifted development, program development, multi-family group treatment, family-focused therapy for eating disorders, body image, motivation enhancement and cognitive-behavioral interventions. Research includes family correlates and outcomes in eating disorder treatment as well as novel treatments for adolescents with eating disorders. Ayelet Talmi, PhD Dr. Ayelet Talmi is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and serves as a Pediatric Psychologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Dr. Talmi is the Associate Director of the Irving Harris Program in Child Development and Infant Mental Health, a fellowship training program in early childhood mental health. Dr. Talmi is also the Program Director of Project CLIMB, an integrated mental health and behavioral services program that delivers services to over 2,500 children annually and trains pediatric primary care providers to better address the developmental and behavioral needs of children. Dr. Talmi’s primary clinical and research interests focus on infant-parent relationships, young children with special health care needs, service delivery systems for children and families, and integrating behavioral health services into pediatric primary care. Dr. Talmi is a Graduate Zero To Three Leaders for the 21st Century Solnit Fellow. In 2012, Dr. Talmi was honored with the Robert J. Harmon Memorial Lectureship. Dr. Talmi received her bachelor’s degree (psychology) from Binghamton University and her master’s and doctoral degrees (child clinical and developmental psychology) from the University of Denver. She completed a Developmental Psychobiology Research postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Colorado. Ashley Taubert-Dupey, RN Ashley Taubert-Dupey has been a burn nurse at Children’s Hospital Colorado for a year and a half. She obtained her nursing degree in Garden city Kansas and then received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Webster in Kansas City. She has been a burn nurse for 8 years with the first 6 years being at an adult/pediatric burn center at the university of Kansas medical center. James Todd, MD Dr. James Todd is a Professor at University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and the Director of Epidemiology, Clinical Outcomes and Clinical Microbiology at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Marianne Wamboldt, MD Dr. Marianne Wamboldt is the Vollbracht Family Professor of Stress and Anxiety Disorders in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, as well as the Medical Director of the Anxiety Disorders Program at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She is a board certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, with over 25 years of clinical, teaching and research experience. She recently stepped down form being Chair of Psychiatry at Childrens Colorado and Vice Chair for Child Psychiatry at the University of Colorado, after ten years of building the clinical, educational and research components of these two programs. Her interests have focused on the role of family relationships in medical (primarily asthma) and psychological outcomes for children and teens, behavioral genetics as a tool to understanding the co-morbidity of medical and psychiatric problems, and clinical interventions for children and adolescents with anxiety, mood, and/or pain disorders. She has authored over 62 scientific articles/chapters, edited two books, and been involved as principal investigator or co-investigator on over 30 grants. Her national involvements include President of the Board of Family Process; past Chair of the Committee on the Physically Ill Child, as well as member of the Program, Family and Prevention Committees, within the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; and member of the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry’s Committee on the Family. Her current interests include the study of yoga and mindfulness. Laura Watne, MS, RD Laura Watne is a clinical dietitian at Children’s Hospital Colorado in the Orthopedics Institute. She works with young athletes as well as with children who have muscular dystrophy and spina bifida. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and a Master’s degree in Human Nutrition and Exercise Science at Colorado State University. She has been a dietitian for 13 years and has worked at Children’s Hospital Colorado for over 3 years. Laura has special interest in helping young athletes who are struggling with disordered eating and body image issues. She has 3 young athletes of her own who range in age from elementary school to high school. Her family loves skiing and camping together in beautiful Colorado. Jason Williams, Psy.D. M.S.Ed. Dr. Jason Williams is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine and serves as the Director of Training at the Children’s Hospital Colorado. Dr. Williams is also involved in the Interprofessional Education program as the Coordinator of Evaluation and Technology. He has an interest in the use of technology both for teaching and for clinical outcomes. He enjoys working with children and families clinically where he focuses on people with impulse control disorders. Dr. Williams is the past President of the Colorado Psychological Association and the incoming Chair of the Association of Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Internship Centers (APPIC). Dr. Williams received his doctorate from the California School of Professional Psychology in Los Angeles, California and his Master in Education from the University of Southern California. He completed an internship and postdoctoral training program at the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. He worked at that institution for 12 years prior to returning home to Colorado. Sam Wang, MD Dr. Wang completed his general pediatric residency and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Children’s Hospital Colorado, and then his medical toxicology fellowship at Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center at Denver Health. He is currently an assistant professor of pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Colorado, where he practices Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology, and is also on faculty at the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center. Just Ask Children's: Bullying

Children of all ages often need guidance from adults when it comes to behavior, both at home and school. Here are a few suggestions to help your child: • Teach children how to navigate conflict with peers. Not everyone will get along all the time. One day someone might be their best friend, and the next day they don’t want to be friends at all. Kids should be prepared to handle these situations. • Help your child understand the difference between "humor" and "hostility". Children are inherently concrete, and they might not understand one person's "joke" is another person's hurt feelings. They need coaching on considering how their words and actions could be interpreted by others. • Determine if your child is being a bully by paying attention to the way he or she is treating others. • Set standards for how one is supposed to act and how they should expect to be treated—both at home and school. These standards should be as high, if not higher, at home. • Encourage and praise sibling cooperation and collaboration. Do not tolerate aggression between siblings. • If your child says something inappropriate, explain how it could become problematic. Talk about ways to say things differently. Ask children “how would you like to say that in a nicer way?” • Cast a wide net. Know your child’s friends and their parents and connect with teachers and counselors frequently.
