As someone around for 9-11 and the "NEVER FORGET NUMBER #1 GREATEST TRAGEDY EVER IN HISTURY" response to it I am in thrilled and invigorated by the fact that younger people just make amogus memes and TikTok nonsense about it. A huge chunk of America cared more about it than any entire genocide and thought you would cry learning about it. They hoped it'd make every generation patriotically angry forever and ever and want to join the military. Instead you Photoshop the towers into squidwards house and shit. Never stop lol
I’m physically unable to take 9/11 seriously, entirely because my grade 9 english teacher was bizarrely obsessed with it. We basically had an entire unit on 9/11. We watched that documentary from those students that were doing a documentary of firefighters and wound up getting the only footage of the first plane hitting. We did a novel study of a book about some kid being in one of the towers for take your kid to work day and him and his dad squeezing past the wreckage of the plane to escape in time. We watched that Nic Cage movie of him being a firefighter during 9/11 that gets stuck in an elevator shaft when the place collapses. I am dead fucking serious, we had to make up fictional people that died in the attack, write an obituary for our 9/11sona’s, and then write and deliver a eulogy as their grief-stricken parent. At one point in the unit the teacher clarified that she hadn’t personally lost anyone to the attack, nor was she anywhere near New York when it happened. She never bothered to ask if any of us had actually lost someone in the attack, which kind of seems like a thing you should do before making us invent fictional victims to give eulogies for. The unit began with her demanding to know where we all were on the day of the attack and what we remembered, and she started crying when we told her that 1. we were two years old at the time and couldn’t remember shit fuck, the closest thing was one of the older kids kind of thought they remembered being very confused at adults freaking out over the TV but that could have been literally anything, and so this meant that 2. we were the last class she would ever teach that could possibly remember 9/11. Probably didn’t help that someone pointed out that we were the class born in 1999, so in two years she’d have students that hadn’t even been born during 9/11. That may have contributed to the teacher crying over the whole thing.
We’re Canadian.
That last sentence KILLED me. Jesus fuck.

Learning that certain things that you thought were widely accepted at the time actually had a lot of pushback kind of shakes up your perception of the world a little.
Like for example when a lot of people in the 1400s and 1500s read the Malleus Maleficarum, basically the book that set off the trend of witch trials in Europe, they knew it was bad and even called it unethical. And before 1400 most people in Europe didn’t even believe that witches existed. Because most Christians before the 1400s didn’t even believe that magic existed. Because “magic” was thought to come from pagan gods, and, you will note, most monotheists don’t believe that other gods exist. So witches weren’t even something that people thought about.
And when Christopher Columbus was off committing crimes against humanity a bunch of people were like “Hey, this guy is committing crimes against humanity. Someone stop him.” And eventually they did, even if they did stop him far too late. He was fired from his position as governor. He was arrested and banished from Spain. And there were people, both native South Americans and Spaniards, who actively opposed the colonization efforts while they were happening.
The book How to Plan a Crusade goes into detail about how much propaganda and recruiting efforts were needed for each crusade because people didn’t just abandon their lives and ride off into the desert without incentive or convincing, and even then plenty of people thought it was a waste of manpower or (often rightfully!) considered crusaders to be bandits not to be trusted.
When I was growing up in Virginia it was heavily implied that the abolitionist movement was a fringe thing in some Northern states up until just before the Civil war, but no. Apparently it was so large that when Jefferson bought the Louisiana territories there was a push by abolitionist lawmakers to immediately end slavery and provide all freedmen the means to found their own communities in the new territories as a form of reparations, since one of the southern arguments for the continuation of slavery was basically “Well, we’ve treated them so poorly that if we freed them then the damage we did to race relations is so great that coexistence is impossible.”
there have always been, in past times as today, a range of people in every society, some of whom were even then fighting for a more just and compassionate accord with their fellow man and some of whom let their greeds and hatreds rule them to the worst allowable excesses. the goal of classics and history education is to teach you enough context to discern between the two, not only in the past but in the present

Had a bit of a rant this morning. Gender is a construct and biology is a joke. Trans lives matter.
“You don’t care what my biology is or what gender I am. You care that I’m not performing femininity to your standards.”
That’s a fantastic way of putting it. It reminds me of that 2016 news story from 2016 of a woman, assigned female at birth, who was forced out of a women’s restroom by 3 male cops. She didn’t present as feminine in her baggy Men’s section clothes, short hair, and backwards baseball cap and that was enough “proof” to call the cops and drag her off.
This is why TERF ideology is so self-destructive. TERF’s claim they’re “pro-women, pro-female empowerment, pro-keeping women safe” but put into practice, it harms AFAB women as well as trans women. When women are told “you should conform more to patriarchal beauty standards or you deserve harassment”, forced to present their ID (containing their home address) to “prove” their gender, when the women’s restroom fills with male cops to drag out someone for being suspiciously androgynous.
That isn’t Feminist at all! It’s an anti-woman stance.
Excluding Transgender Women from Female Empowerment is Counter-Intuitive to the Cause! Trans Women are Women! Policing Gender Expression is Regressive!
Yeah. I listened to a self-identified Black butch lesbian talk about how a white woman called the police on her for being in the bathroom and the white male officer asked to feel her chest to “prove” she was a woman.
The Black butch - cis - lesbian was giving this talk at an anti-bathroom bill rally by the way. She was revealing this horrible story to the audience to make them understand what transphobia really is, and really does. And yes it is related to racism.
Seriously. FUCK. TERFS.

And she's mega dead.
Faramir said fuck your storyline
‘i did not even want him’ well there’s a faramir mood
this is SUCH a writing mood omg
Strider did this to him too, wayyyyy back when. Just showed up there in Bree, smoking in the corner. Refused to leave or let the story go on without him.
Maybe it’s a Númenorean thing. XD
@lorata with some excellent Tolkien commentary over here
I love that this is a universal experience among writers.

It’s important that the ponies were all safe tho.
This is literally the best post I have ever seen on tumblr.
It’s good to know that characters act of their own accord in everyone’s minds, even JR Goddamn Tolkien.
ponies in lotr have plot armour because we were all traumatized by the MULTIPLE tpk’s for ponies in the hobbit
me seeing a picture of a little bat: aww :) its Bruce Wayne :))
Bruce Wayne: please shut the fuck up I fucking hate bats they scare me so fucking bad stop
Bruce fights manbat looking cool as a cucumber on the outside, secretly having a panic attack on the ìnside
Batman has to do some sort of glad-handing event for the JL and they organizers brought in those people who bring animals from the zoo and ‘Oh Batman, if you would be so kinda as to hold this Flying Fox bat for us so we can take a promo picture, the children would love it!’
Batman stands there sweating bullets while the kiddos ooo and aahhhh
I found some time. Batman for the photos looking all types of cool, calm, and collected…
Batman after he gets home from leaving as soon as they took the bat back…

Betting I’ve reblogged this before. Betting I’ll reblog it when it turns up again.
In addition to the print terminology stuff: the visual shorthand icons and ad graphics for something about writing are still often pen-nibs, fountain pens and typewriters…
…while graphics of a monitor, keyboard and mouse remain visual shorthand for computing…
…even though most writers now use monitor / keyboard / mouse or even laptop / touchpad.
In addition, headers for “this blog / website is about writing” are often in one of the many imitation typewriter fonts complete with smudges, or just Courier.
The start and end call icons on most / all smartphones is still the handset of a classic desk telephone, and sometimes the open-app icon is a complete phone.
The term “hang up” for “end the call” refers to something even older - one of these…
And of course the Save icon is indeed a 3½ inch floppy disc.
Why it wasn’t a 5¼ floppy is a mystery. The icon version is just as distinctive.
Also, why various OP updates never changed “Save” to the graphic of a CD / DVD or flash drive is another mystery, and nowadays a Save icon should probably be a cartoon cloud.
Graphics and terminology are funny things.
reblogging this again for EVEN MORE information.
I’m mostly entertained by the guy who thinks you need to know that “case” means “box” in French as though that’s not what it means in English.

Floating in on the wind, yet again, the sound of It’s Raining, It’s Pouring being sung by a child on the creepiest siren in Britain.
tl;dr this woman was hearing creepy phantom nursery rhymes every night and it turned out to be a local industrial building’s alarm system, being triggered by spiders on the motion detectors
which is all well and good but “we investigated the creepy nursery rhymes, and it turns out it’s spiders” is one hell of a true statement
