Understanding The Spectrum

I hear alot of people misinterpreting or misusing the term ‘autism spectrum’. So for Autism Acceptance week, I decided to make a comic to help explain the term and how it affects things. Archie is one of the reasons I became so interested/knowledgeable in autism (I like to go all out in research when I write characters for comics n such) so he’s the one presenting everything! after the huge amazing response I got from my ace!Jiang Cheng comic - all of the ace people saying how amazing it felt to be acknowledged, and all of the people who came to me saying that they hadn’t realised they were ace until they read the comic - I decided I wanted to make something for ace awareness week. it’s not quite as pretty or feelsy as the other comic, but there are so many people even within the LGBT+ community who just… genuinely do not understand asexuality, I figured even something basic would help :)

People like to identify with labels because it makes it easier to find terminology to explain what we’re experiencing, and it opens us up to a world where we’re not the only ones who feel this way. It’s not a way to be special, it’s a way to understand and belong.

This week I learned that 2/3 of American teens don't even know that 6 million Jews were murdered in the holocaust.

This is so shocking to me, as this might be one of the biggest events in human history.

I wanted to share my photos from my trip to Poland, where there used to live the biggest Jewish community, a community that today is nonexistent.

The 'grave' of the famous teacher Janusz Korczak, who said he prefers to die with his orphanage children when given a chance to escape the death camp:

As part of a ceremony we did, we created a small monument with peace and remembrance in our minds. Mine is a growing tree with roots, to show how we grow using our history as guidance:

Today we have names of 3 million Jews who died in the holocaust, documented by friends and families. The other 3 million are unknown, because there was no one to remember them- their entire family and friends circle died with them.

I have my own family story, and my own grandfather is a holocaust survivor. It's hard to find Jewish people who don't have a holocaust story to tell because every single Jewish person has some connection to a descendant of a holocaust survivor, or is himself a descendant of a holocaust survivor.

There are 6 million Jewish people living in Israel today. Around 75 years after the holocaust. You do the math.

Please, remember this event. Please, don't downplay it. This is not another illuminati conspiracy. This is history, it has evidence, and if we don't learn from it we will get there again in no time.

So one thing that can be helpful for people who are trying to figure out their sexuality is to hear how other people figured out theirs. I can’t tell you the number of times I searched “how do you know if you’re _____” when I was really confused about my orientation.

So here are a few signs that let me know I was probably hella asexual (other aces please add on! Let’s make a master list!)

Didn’t realize sexual attraction was real until I was in college

Thought “sexual orientation” meant “who you want to date/kiss/have crushes on” and had nothing really to do with “who you’re sexually attracted to”

Often forget that people have sexual irl and can’t really imagine anyone I know having or wanting sex (sex in general just feels like a hypothetical concept)

Struggle to understand what sexual attraction really is and still sometimes don’t quite believe that people experience it irl

Didn’t get why teaching abstinence in schools would be so unrealistic (are teens really gonna have sex? like.. why would they even want to?)

Never quite got the concept of the “hormonal teenager”

Thought of sex as something I would have to eventually “deal with” rather than something I was looking forward to

Could never relate with videos talking about “how I knew I was gay/bi/pans etc.” because those stories usually involved people saying stuff like “I found myself imagining what it would be like to kiss/have sex with so and so” and that was never my experience

Felt relieved when I realized that sex was optional rather than a life requirement

None of my ideas of an ideal relationship ever involved sex

Any sexual fantasies I had never involved me as a participant

Always felt slightly disingenuous identifying as other orientations

another important thing about solidarity within queer communities is that so many of us will identify with different labels (especially when we are young/still figuring out that we aren’t straight & cis to begin with) before figuring out how we identify longterm. E.g. gay people who start out identifying as bi, trans men who initially identify as butch lesbians, asexuals who at first identify as bisexual (because hey, that’s technically being equally attracted to multiple genders), and so on. In fact, most queer people, at one time or another, identified as cishet. So we of all people should be aware that figuring out our identities takes time, and is a winding path. 

And this is why solidarity in our communities is so important. And why gatekeeping is so dangerous. Because not only is each part of our community a longterm home, sanctuary, and support system for people of a certain identity, we also provide a path and an unofficial Welcoming Committee to new members of the wider LGBTQA+ community (especially young queer people, for whom a supportive welcoming is so important). And in turn, many of the people who find their way to us will be coming from a different part of the rainbow path. This is also why bigotry is so so damaging when it comes from within our communities, and why we each of us have a responsibility to examine our prejudices and acknowledge that being queer doesn’t automatically give us a pass–we are just as capable of bigotry as anyone on the outside, and in a unique position to do harm from within. Fight transphobia, fight aphobia, fight biphobia, fight racism and ableism and discrimination wherever you see it in our communities. And more than that, celebrate ALL the colors on our flags, and all of the diverse communities they represent. Solidarity makes us so much more powerful, as a community and as individuals. So I’d like to start by saying:

just a friendly reminder that this type of rhetoric is misleading, (in my opinion, slightly antisemitic) and not the way to go about fighting religious homophobes.

religious jews still follow these laws. we dont wear clothes that have a blend of wool & linen (laws of shatnez). fresh produce in israel follows all of the agricultural laws outlined in the torah. as for some of the other laws i always see referenced: we don’t eat shellfish or pork or anything prohibited by the torah. clean-shaven men will only ever use electric razors never blades. we don’t work on the sabbath, we observe the sanctioned holy days, we believe in, love and fear God and obey God’s commandments.

personally, i find the rhetoric harmful and insulting for three reasons. one, it only works on the (very christian) premise that the torah is outdated, and that ~nobody in their right mind~ would follow those laws anymore. two, it tends to ignore the fact that lgbtq+ orthodox jews exist and have to live through the struggle of being lgbtq+ and observant, despite community backlash, severe judgement and institutionalised homophobia. and three, it gives homophobia-masked-as-religious-observance some sort of legitimacy because yeah, the rest of those laws are kept in varying degrees by millions of people.

don’t fight homophobes by saying ‘look at all of these other ridiculous laws’ – those laws matter to a lot of people, including me, a jewish lesbian. instead, say ‘do not stand idly by your fellow’s blood (leviticus 19:16)’, ‘whoever humiliates another in public forfeits their place in the World to Come (avot 3:11), ‘one shall not say to a person words that hurt them or cause them pain against which they cannot stand (sefer hachinuch, mitzvah 338)’, ‘do not do to others that which you would not wish them to do to you. this is the whole Torah; the rest is commentary (gemara shabbat 31a)’, and what is perhaps one of my favorite verses in tanach, ‘to what is good and just is more preferable to God than sacrifice (proverbs 21:3)’.

oh, and here’s a good starting point for educating your religious friends and family members.
