I re-watched the Ice Age movies, some of them at least, mostly the last ones I didn't remember well, and I just realized how little development Diego actually has ???
I'm gonna ramble a little because I am mad about this, Diego was my favorite growing up and I'm sad he didn't have many moments, and I'm putting it under the cut cause it's probably gonna get long
Now I'm not the best at analyzing characters and stuff so it's just my perspective but I feel like the others had so much more sub plot material than Diego
The first movie is great, Manny is grieving his dead family and learning to not let his past dictate his decisions by returning the baby to the humans despite his grudge. Sid is, uh, being Sid, he's been abandonned by his family and trying to get the baby back to his own family, also trying to form a bond with Manny to not be alone. Diego is learning what it is like to be part of a herd that looks after each other, going as far as betraying his clan because he realized how badly he was treated in his clan, how they were all treated really, and realized he didn't want that life anymore and that he would be better with the others, and the three of them become a found family in the end.
In the second movie Manny is dealing with the thought of being the last of his kind after the loss of his family and then the fear of "betraying" his former family if he gets with Ellie, he'll eventually realize that it's okay for him to start a new life. Sid is looking for recognition and respect, to be estimated among the herd as an important member, something even his family never did as they left him behind, and he will eventually get that. And then Diego is scared of water. That's it that's his sub plot. He's a tiger so he's scared of water and it get resolved in the end after one talk with Sid. I feel like he could have gotten more, like they could have gone deeper, for example why was he so reticent to admit he has fears ? Is it just pride or was it because his old clan viewed fear as weakness ? Did he think that if he was perceived as weak because of his fear then the herd wouldn't have wanted him anymore ? I feel like they just gave him that fear because "he's a cat so he hates water" and it's a missed opportunity to explore his trauma in my opinion.
In the third movie Manny is gonna have a kid with Ellie so he is very protective and focused on that, he is rebuilding his life and healing from the loss. Sid would like his own family too and so he adopts the eggs and then tries to raise the tyrannosaurus, refusing to abandon them but eventually realizing that they belong with their real mother. Diego, at the beginning, wants to leave because he doesn't feel at his place anymore with the whole baby thing, plus he feels his predator abilities are degrading, but then Sid is in danger so he gets back with the others to save him and his whole leaving thing doesn't really get addressed ? He just stays and all is fine ? No talk no nothing ? My dude was being insecure as hell about both his belonging to the group and his capacities as a tiger (his whole identity basically) and it just doesn't go deeper than that.
In the fourth movie, Manny is being overprotective of his daughter, which again is logical and a result of having lost his previous family, and is looking to get back to her and his wife, eventually realizing in the end that his daughter is growing up and capable of defending herself and starts to give her more independence. Sid is once again abandonned by his family but this time he has his grandma, he's wondering if he really is that bad and only makes mistakes, and in the end he kinda saves the day with the grandma and her whale. Diego gets a really quick love story, litteraly "hey do you wanna join our herd ?" "No" "we would treat you better" "yeah okay I'm convinced", the end. They could have bonded over so much more ?? For example how both him and Shira left their clan ? What made her leave and what made him leave ? Get some backstory idk ? Realize they are more similar than they thought at the beginning ?? Idk just BOND ?? they end up together and it feels forced, like they end up a couple because they are both tigers idk, it's a very missed opportunity to explore their characters like they did with Ellie in the second movie.
In the fifth movie Manny is once again overprotecting his daughter and having trouble letting her live her life because he doesn't want to let go and lose her, once again a trauma response, and in the end he sees that she grew up and he needs to let her take her independence and it doesn't mean losing her, just letting her be happy. Sid has his love story, he is finally accepted and liked for who he is despite his flaws but sadly has to leave Brooke behind, only for her to find him again and they can be happy together. And Diego is there. That's it he's litteraly just there, him and Shira add nothing to the plot, sometimes they go "we kinda wanna have kids :/" and they don't even have one in the end. Scrat has more impact on the plot than Diego.
So yeah Diego just progressively gets forgotten and it's so sad because there were so many opportunities with him ? The simple fact he is the only predator in a herd of preys, how did he adapt to that ? Did he feel out of place ? Did he start feeling bad for eating meat ? For being a predator as a whole ? Was he ever scared he would turn on them if he was hungry enough ? Did he ever have doubt regarding their trust towards him because he could have very well attacked them at any moment ? Did he have to fight his instincts at some point and did they help him with that ? Did he try to become vegetarian as proof he wouldn't hunt them ? If so did he suffer from malnutrition ? Did they see it ? What did they do about that ? Just, in general, how did they make the cohabitation work for both parties ?
All the trauma from his clan too ! Did he ever feel like the herd's caring was conditional too ? That if he wasn't useful they would leave him behind ? His former leader threatened to kill him multiple times if he didn't complete his task after all, and he wasn't surprised by that so it might have been an habit for him. Did he ever fear he would get hurt for failing something ? Punished for having misbehaved ? Looked down upon for talking about his feelings or fears regarding the water, for example ? The others all got a chance to heal from their trauma, why didn't he ???
Another thing I am pissed about is his nocturnal vision, it got used one single time in the first movie and then never again when it is such a cool and USEFUL ability that could have came in handy multiple times, especially during the fourth movie
There are just so many things that could have been explored with Diego, so much character development, but he got none of that and kinda became a side character, not totally background but definitely not as important as Manny or even Sid, when it originally was the three of them as main characters but now it feels like Manny is the main, Sid is the side-kick/comic relief, and Diego is there to sometimes get them out of troubles and that's it
So anyway I love Diego and I am mad with how they treated his character when he could have had more
It's interesting how the trope that seems to connect the Traitor Trio's lieutenants is their outstanding durability. Hisagi has got a bankai that makes him immortal as long as his opponent is alive. Most of Kira's body is practically dead, but he is being kept sentient and operational by some wacky zombie tech. Hinamori made it through two "should have died from that" events and ended up in a surprisingly decent shape, and I'm suspecting at this point that she will also receive some explicitly immortality-themed powers if Bleach is ever continued
The way so many in the fandom hate Momo honestly says a lot about how victims of abuse are treated in real life—and it makes me SO angry. Kubo wrote her in such a very realistic way, and that’s exactly what people can’t handle!!!
I think people wanted the typical shonen reaction: a moment of shock, then anger, then a sudden power-up like we see with male characters all the time. But that’s not what happens here. Momo doesn’t bounce immediately back—she suffers.
Aizen manipulated her so deeply that even someone as detached and cruel as him thought killing her would be a mercy. That says everything about the extent of the damage.
Trauma doesn’t just turn into strength overnight. Or sometimes it never turns into strength.
So if your response is to hate her for it, you’re not proving she’s weak—you’re proving exactly how little you understand about abuse and that you’re VERY fortunate, unlike many other people, that you don’t get it !!!!!!!!!!!
One of the few things I genuinely appreciate about post-series ATLA media is the symbolisms surrounding Maiko, especially the narrative choices in the ATLA comics involving Mai and Zuko, and what those details suggest about the progression of their relationship.
In the final panel of the Rebound comic, Mai is shown holding Zuko’s face on a picture of them, surrounded by a rose and fire lilies. Roses traditionally symbolize devotion, enduring love, and passion, while fire lilies symbolize fiery passion and purity.
I think the flowers reflect the emotional state of Mai and Zuko’s relationship during that period: intense, unresolved, and still deeply emotional despite the breakup.
Even though Mai was the one who ended the relationship, Rebound makes it clear that her feelings for Zuko never truly disappeared even while she was dating someone else. Smoke and shadow reinforces that the longing between them is mutual rather than one-sided.
Neither of them has emotionally moved on, which is why I don’t interpret the flowers in Rebound as symbols of closure. Instead, they symbolize a love that still exists beneath the pain and separation.
In the Ashes of the Academy comic, however, the symbolism noticeably shifts. Mai is shown holding a daisy while standing beside Zuko. Daisies are commonly associated with spring and are usually among the first flowers to bloom during the season.
Daisies symbolize new beginnings, innocence, youth, hope, and loyal love. Unlike the emotionally intense symbolism in Rebound, daisies carry a much softer and calmer meaning.
Ashes also includes cicada beetles, both insects commonly associated with emergence and renewal during spring and because of that, I think Ashes is very likely meant to take place during spring as well. That seasonal framing strengthens the symbolism of renewal surrounding both Mai and Zuko.
What makes this especially compelling to me is the progression across the comics themselves. Rebound focuses on unresolved passion and longing, while Ashes introduces symbolism tied to healing, loyalty, and renewal.
Even though the comics never directly state the status of Mai and Zuko’s relationship, the daisy panel feels like a subtle indication that this arc may represent the beginning of reconciliation between them :)
Now of course, symbolisms are subjective and interpretations will always vary depending on the reader, but as a Maiko fan who loves analyzing their relationship and dynamic, I genuinely believe that the flowers in these panels were chosen with intentional symbolic meaning tied to the progression of their story.
Going back to the cicada beetles, another piece of symbolism I really like surrounding Mai in the comics is the recurring metaphor of cicada beetles, specifically cicadas, because they are often associated with personal change, rebirth, transformation, and emergence.
Mai spending years “underground” before finally emerging feels like a strong metaphor for who she was before The Boiling Rock. For most of her life, she existed in an environment where she was emotionally repressed, politically indoctrinated, and discouraged from expressing individuality or personal opinion under both Fire Nation culture and her family’s expectations. When she betrays Azula at The Boiling Rock, that moment feels symbolic of emergence itself.
Like a cicada shedding its skin and coming into the light for the first time, Mai steps out of the emotional numbness and silence she had been trapped in for years. She allows herself to become vulnerable in a way she never had before, choosing LOVE OVER FEAR.
That’s why I think the recurring spring symbolism in Ashes matters so much. Ashes tells us that Mai’s arc is about personal growth and becoming more outspoken about her beliefs. The imagery of cicadas emerging during spring, alongside the daisy symbolism of renewal and new beginnings, makes both Zuko’s and especially Mai’s character arcs feel less like a return to who they used to be, and more like a transformation into entirely new people.
Been thinking about this for awhile with my reading of Jed MacKay, Adj X-Men run. I'm honestly down for a Kwannon Psylocke lead main X-Men team for a future run. I feel like she has in story proven that's she's very capable of handing things and keeping a cool head and seeing the big picture of things. It could be very interesting to see how she leads a X-Men team in a post Krakoa world and having seen Age of Revelation and what she became what she hates most in that timeline. Plus it could be interesting to see how she differs from and/or is similar with the likes of Cyclops, Jean, Emma, Magneto, Storm, Wolverine, Xavier, and Rogue X-Men lead teams in terms of how they operate, view the world, and team structure/members. Without doubt though, I would love to see Monet as her 2nd in command since for the short they were on Uncanny Avengers, they were a fun duo team and extremely beautiful. I think Kwannon Psylocke lead X-Men team run has a lot of potential to be very good and fun if done right.
Is Fate/strange Fake worth watching? I think so, especially if you're a Fate series fan. This might be the Fate anime with my favorite art style. And it has amazing animation, too. Just be aware that this series isn't finished yet.
Gajeel Redfox being CANONICALLY interested on whatever Levy has to say and talk about her books... oh my godddd. just found this sweet illustration by mashima on his twitter and i'm so happy

thinking about how in the 15 years since Mai and Zuko broke up since the Promise, not a single new love interest was introduced for Zuko.
15 years of comics and almost every single one is about Zuko pining, unrelentingly, for Mai. Zuko never being able to move on from their breakup. Zuko trying to win Mai back. Zuko changing and becoming a better person for Mai and the fire nation.
even when Mai dated another guy. Even when Mai’s not ready yet for a relationship, he’s waiting for her. He’s yearning.
say what you will about the comics, but this was so peak. Better than any fanfiction.
And people will read this and claim that Zuko ends up marrying someone else. Sure Jan
