I've seen a bunch of "fandom etiquette" posts on my dash today and I'm going to say something that is maybe going to be unpopular but;
The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.
And I am not going to mince words here:
A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.
That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.
"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.
So much of "fandom etiquette" seems to be about insulating creatives from Feeling Bad and hostility to any kind of negative feedback is a pretty big contributor to why bigotry festers in these spaces.
#imo the potluck analogy applies- it would be rude to critique someone's icing technique at a potluck bc it wasn't as good as at the bakery #but if they had decorated their cupcakes w hate symbols it wouldn't be rude to tell them that's gross and gtfo #in fact it would be inappropriate to NOT say anything in that situation #or to complain that another guest who did point it out was 'ruining everyone's potluck' #and pointing out racism in fan works is 100% the second thing not the first! (via destructions-daughter)
There's also a tendency to conflate anyone who critiques general trends with bad faith randos. Like, there is fandom behavior that is 100% racist and should be talked about, but there are also trends of racist/sexist/ableist preferences.
If I say "I am uncomfortable with fandom's tendency to write trans men as feminine and submissive" I do not mean "I think every person who writes feminine submissive trans men should be chased with pitchforks". I don't even mean "any cis-person who writes feminine or submissive trans men should be chased with pitchforks". I mean "I would like writers to seriously think about why this is so common, why they write that, and if it fairly and genuinely engages with what it means to be a trans man, or if they just think it's hot when submissive people have vaginas and didn't want to write omegaverse of m/f".
Similarly, when people say "fandom is systemically less interested in black characters, less willing to give flat black characters rich fanon than flat white characters, and less interested in black characters in ships", the response is not to explain why you, personally, just happen to like popular white guy in that fanon. Your job is to look at yourself and ask if you tend to "just happen to be more interested" in the popular white guy across fandoms, be honest, and start unpacking that. Sometimes it's easier to love the flat character who's already getting 10,000 fics with headcanons and art and meta.
If somebody says "I wish there were more gluten free options at the potluck. I hate always showing up and not finding anything I can eat*", they are not asking you to throw your cake in the trash and weep. They do not want to hear your long speech about how actually this is your grandmother's recipe, and you've tried it with rice flour actually, but it just didn't work. You think about what you can do, and you listen to how they feel.
*The metaphor here not being that you can't read fic that isn't "good rep". The metaphor here is that it can be isolating to be in spaces where nobody is trying to make sure people like you are welcome.
idk why people are still trying to do "hear me out"s on tumblr
you could talk about wanting to fuck the space needle on here and people would still call you a poser for insisting on fucking "conventionally attractive architecture" as if that's a coherent, easily-recognizable category
I want to fuck Antoni Gaudi's unbuilt Hotel Attraction skyscraper design
"hear me out" and it's a picture of the most fuckable building you've ever seen. c'mon now.
āhear me outā and itās the fucking dildopolis
absolutely boggles my mind how so many social media sites do NOT want you scrolling without an account. can't even click on an instagram profile while not being logged in without it blocking you. even if you put it in the url, it only lets you scroll like twice before it prompts you to log in. fucking youtube won't let me watch videos on my phone anymore because i use firefox focus and don't want to log in every time i wanna watch a video so it's instead flagged me as a bot. i also think social media sites are drastically overestimating how badly i "need" to use their sites. if you won't let me browse someone's profile or watch a damn video on the Browsing Profiles and Watching Videos social media sites then i will simply leave. the power of chucking your phone into the metaphorical ocean. i hope i hurt their metrics every time i close out of a tab <3
Meanwhile this was what various medical professionals in that reddit thread had to say about it.
They do not, in fact, love it.
The proof that chiropractic is an utterly failed medical profession is not that adjustments can cause harm, but that the profession has responded by ignoring and denying the harm, rather than studying it.
All medical treatments (other than complete placebos) have some risk of harm, but for real treatments given by real professionals, the harms are tracked, measured and warned about. If the harms are too severe, the treatment is no longer used.
One of my colleagues was a chiropractor. After a while he began to suspect that a lot of his patients actually just had muscle tears, not spinal issues. He bought an ultrasound machine, learned how to use it and how to read ultrasound, and found that to be the case. Between that and the constant pressure from management to get customers (because lbr, they're not patients, they're customers), he got sick and tired of it and bailed to become a sonographer full time.
And before people pipe up with "but my chiro is good, they have me do exercises and so on!" that's just regular ass physiotherapy. See a physiotherapist. A lot of people who sing the praises of chiros because they saved them from chronic pain would have gotten the same benefits from seeing an actual licensed physio, who can prescribe the same or even better exercises because they have an actual fucking education.
The amount of fucking charts I've seen where a patient went to a chiropractor and now needs a surgery is fucking insane. All I do is medical charts, day in and day out doing medical code. I've gone over hundreds of patients whole year of appointments. Unless the chiropractor is also a physical therapist, that patient is going to get worse and need surgery with very few exceptions. It doesn't matter when they mention seeing a chiropractor, by the end of the year they need surgery for issues that started after *shock and awe* a chiropractor appointment! I've seen patients needing multiple surgeries to be functional after chiropractors. I've seen patients lose their ability to walk because of chiropractors. And all the way up till they need surgery, through the issues piling up and needing more pain meds, the patients insist it's helping because the want so badly for it to be helping. I wish it did
tumblr user who listens to bands like the beatles, chooses kindness, considers themselves to be anti-war, fights for the liberation of marginalised groups, advocates community resources and free services etc. youāre not a punk. youāre a hippie. and thatās okay.
I was unironically telling one of my best friends a week or so ago that more people need to like the idea of being hippie instead of mislabeling themselves as punk. Radical kindness is a hippie thing, not a punk one! Plus, if the hope is to be subversive and push against conservatism, as someone else said, your average conservative will be probably more offended by a hippie than a punk
That last point is an interesting one to bring up, because thereās been a wave of conservatives trying to reclaim punk for themselves, and a lot of people online have mocked this development as a paradox because āitās impossible to be conservative and punkā but the problem is⦠punk is specifically an anti-establishment movement. Bigots usually (if not always) view themselves as the victims of targeted attacks on their freedom of speech or their right to live comfortably, which can easily breed anti-establishment sentiments, hence why Nazi punks have existed since the beginning of the punk movement itself. You donāt know which establishment a punk is against, and it might not be the same one as yours.
Hippies, on the other hand, are everything that conservatives hate. A movement that was built on body autonomy, sexual freedom, anti-war and total liberation is exactly what conservatives are shitting their pants over. Punks are easier for conservatives to hijack and claim, but a conservative wouldnāt touch a hippie with a barge pole.
This isnāt to undermine the punk movement as a whole, I just think itās important for people to take off their rose-coloured glasses when it comes to a single music subculture and not treat it like the be all and end all of political activism, especially when it can lead to unknowingly sharing spaces with extremely dangerous bigots.
Stop volunteering to be the village sacrifice we all know you're not a virgin. The dragon probably wouldn't even be into you.
Untie yourself from that altar right now.
Look. I didn't want to say anything because it's kind of a touchy subject, but the dragon doesn't actually take these "brides" back to its lair full of riches and add them to a harem. Okay? It's a big fucking lizard with a brain the size of an orange, it just roasts and eats them.
That's why we always pick the most useless airhead to sacrifice come harvest season.
Now come on, get those chains off. Where did you even get these? Oh you made them? See that's the kind of craftsmanship the village needs you for. We'll have a big orgy after the ritual and if you want a bunch of us will dress up as dragons and take turns having a go at you. It'll be nice, you'll see.
Yes, yes, I know, not the same. Well not all dreams are attainable, in the end.
You think robots canāt get pregnant? Well explain vending machines, you dumb ass.
I feel like a 3d printer is a better analogy because it actually builds the thing inside it but yeah
3d printers are viviparous, vending machines are hosts for parasitoid doctors pepper that oviposit their eggs inside them
if a vending machine drops its drink and it explodes, it's ovoviviparous

okay Iāll say it nicer:
australia was colonised according to the myth of terra nullius (or empty land). ever since the very early days of colonialism, the land has been framed as something untameable and unliveable. this has justified acts of violence against the first peoples here, in that they are seen as non-people. it has justified the destruction of sacred land in the goal of making australia look more european. (an example: our capital city contains a man-made lake that is now nothing better than a fetid carp pond. itās disgusting and unnatural). basically, the idea of ātaming australiaā has justified endless harm
āeverything in australia is weird and dangerousā is not just some silly meme phrase, it is something that arcs back to the very beginning of white settlers laying claim to āaustraliaā. and personally I am very sick of seeing it thrown around like it means nothing
Can't wait for people to stop joking about how all the wildlife in australia is scary and deadly...
Yeah and like... I think there is space to talk about the ways Australia is relatively unique or at least different to other places: our snakes and spiders are more dangerous than anyone else's, but our native bees and 'bears' are safer. You might die of sunstroke but you won't die in a blizzard, earthquake, or tornado.
Australia is not especially dangerous, or unfriendly, it's just 'different', but then the question is different to what. Why should deadly earthquakes and forests full of murderous bears be seen as more normal? Why is a desert any more weird or scary than a bog or tundra? Why are cold damp places seen as the only form of natural beauty, why do people see warm dry places as dead when they are full of life, and see warm damp places as full of TOO MUCH life somehow? Why, even in Australia, do we use the aesthetics of red October leaves and Christmas snow, and not celebrations of the beautiful seasonal changes we actually see all around us? Why are white Australians so actively hostile to engaging and connecting with the local cultures that have been celebrating and working with the place we live for thousands of years, and even after hundreds of years still see our home as Strange?
Historians are looking into the possibility that the first Australians practised forms of agriculture and aquaculture, writes Cathy Pryor.
Yes, let's definitely have a conversation about why the European colonists were invested in the belief that the indigenous people didn't cultivate the land.
YEAH, THAT TOO. It's important to remember that the way Indigenous Australians were and are treated would be just as unjustified if they were all hunter gatherers. But they were not, and that lie has been spread for a reason.
Also I read through the replies and people point out that exactly the same sort of exotification into a Dangerous Alien Landscape Which Must Be Tamed happens with Africa, Asia, The Middle East etc. Even like... Scotland and Italy, back in the day. And for similar reasons. And this kind of imagery is everywhere, like play any video game with multiple biomes or cultures etc (real or fictional) and see which ones are treated as Normal and which ones are Weird and Scary/Exotic.
"The Australian landscape is alien and mysterious and will kill you" has been a trope since the very first white people looked at this continent, and it's tiring.
One legitimately weird thing about Tumblr is that we literally canāt code for shit, many people quit working at Tumblr due to a hostile work environment, and we canāt seem to program a simple blogging website to not flood your RAM.
