it’s fiction so it’s subjective, EVERY SINGLE ASPECT. if someone tells you that fiction is objective they want you to become easily manipulatable and stop thinking

Ship being canon means characters are being canonically shipped together. It can be coworkers, brotherhood, friendship—up to any interaction, which largely depends on one’s interpretation of the fictional, therefore subjective, source material. It means these characters are interlinked in canon, which means their ship is presented in canon, meaning the ship is canon. The popularity of a ship and the opinion of a fandom majority play a huge role in how canon ships are generally viewed and what ships are perceived canon.

On the other hand, pairing being canon means the characters are paired in some way; usually it refers to queer platonic, romantic, or sexual relationships. Whether a pairing is canonical or not is by 90 percent decided by a fandom majority, since by the subjective nature of fiction it is impossible to objectively deduce the nature of relationships characters have.

So, fandom is something to be enjoyed by all. I don't care if you hate certain ships or characters, the point of fandom is to be able to freely enjoy the material.

Given that, I feel like it needs to be addressed that fandom etiquette has been lacking.

If you dislike certain aspects of a fandom, block those tags. Along with that, do not use those tags to talk down on those who enjoy those aspects. There are often specially curated tags for disliking those aspects (e.g. people tend to use "anti [aspect]" to do so). Those people are allowed to have their community, but if they start hogging the non-anti tag for said aspect, then it becomes an issue.

I know some people do not believe in pro-shipping (which just means one is for the freedom to ship, no matter how controversial it may be, and not problematic ship), but that dislike will lead to furthering censorship--one of the main enemies of fandom as a whole. You are allowed to disagree with certain things, but you have to understand the consequences of being anti-ship and what that may bring to fandom.

Furthermore, don't publicly post about hating a fic. If you don't like it, talk about it privately with friends, or don't talk about it at all. Fanfic writers do not write for you; they write for themselves. You actively bashing what they love dearly just makes you a dick, not someone spreading goodness.

Also, for the love of fandom and human society in general, do not go around spreading hate to creators in general. There are people behind the screen. You do not need to agree with them or things they may have done, but a public witch hunt will get you nowhere. Things that you believe to be true can be easily doctored. The internet has existed for some time, and even history has been doctored.

Block things you don't wish to see (e.g. characters; fandoms; ships; creators; i don't care). You are the only one who curates your page. Tumblr is special that way.

You do not get the excuse to yuck on someone's yum. That makes you part of the reason why fandom has grown to be toxic. You are not some saviour for doing that. You are actively contributing to the problem.

The want of fandom is to create a positive space, so just think for a moment if what you are doing will create a positive impact for the fandom, or if you are actively feeding into the negativity and making it feel like a genuinely unsafe space.

We are all people. Treat everyone with respect and try not to be a total prick.

I actually hate learning new slurs. Like, yes, it's important to be able to recognize them, but man. I did not need to see/hear that. I did not need to know. I'm sad someone would something like that about a marginalized minority group :(

And if you use specifically 4chan slurs, you will be extremely sus. Nothing good ever came from there.

I am an old fandom fart and it drives me a little bit insane when young people say things like "I headcanon that X character really struggles with emotional vulnerability." No my dear that is just a correct interpretation rooted in copious textual evidence.

"My headcanon is that this character collected bugs as a child, or plays the saxophone, or only wears high-end underwear, or is really into pet play." Congratulations, if you made some fun shit up for no reason other than that you wanted to, you got yourself a headcanon.

Transmasc erasure is the reason I wasn’t able to transition earlier.

I got on T at 20 years old. This is not the first time I tried to transition. When I was 13, I went to a highly respected institution for transgender youth to get on puberty blockers and hormones. My two providers did not know what a trans man was. They offered me a side-clasp binder off amazon in the wrong size that fucked up my ribs because they gave me incorrect guidelines on how to wear it. They refused to put me on any medication until I could prove to them that I wasn’t just confused. They never put me on any medication and always told me that being a girl is hard and I couldn’t just run away.

These things have real consequences for real vulnerable people.

Remember the dozens of trans men bullied for their art specifically because they’re trans men? Remember when everyone was praising and adoring “Welcome to the Internet, Transvestite” until it came out that a trans man wrote it and all of a sudden it was tasteless and transmisogynistic and evil? If you’re not seeing transmasc art, it’s because you are not in community with trans men, likely because you’ve proven yourself unsafe to be in community with.

its very telling to me about a lot of the the transfemme community i’ve seen on here when someone shares a lot of experiences - personal experiences- they’ve had with toxic, abusive, or rapist trans women, where instead of being like

“yeah dude it sucks that you’ve had several instances of horrific experiences with trans women - we do really need to be aware that just because someone is a trans woman, it doesn’t stop them from being a bad person too. i’m sorry you’ve had these bad experiences and will help make you comfortable and reassured whenever you’re around me, a trans woman, just like id do for any survivor of domestic violence, rape, or traumatic experience with any other gender of person they experienced it with. if i see toxic behavior in my community, ill call it out”

Characters will make a very nuanced choice that makes sense for their story arc and internal conflict, and audience members will be like "is anyone else going to misconstrue this in the most black and white, bad faith manner possible?"

It can be easy to confuse the two, but you don't actually "wish you were more disabled", you wish your disability was taken seriously and was properly accommodated and that you had access to the support and resources you need - and that desire is so valid. You deserve more. But the sad truth is that no level of disability actually guarantees a sufficient level of support. So you have to work to separate your very understandable desire for more support from the incorrect assumption that other disabled people are consistently receiving what you aren't. All of us are getting fucked over in this society, and no group of disabled people actually has it easy.
