In the 1960′s Legally a woman couldn’t

Open a bank account or get a credit card without signed permission from her father or hr husband.

Serve on a jury - because it might inconvenience the family not to have the woman at home being her husband’s helpmate.

Obtain any form of birth control without her husband’s permission. You had to be married, and your hub and had to agree to postpone having children.

Get an Ivy League education. Ivy League schools were men’s colleges ntil the 70′s and 80′s. When they opened their doors to women it was agree that women went there for their MRS. Degee.

Experience equality in the workplace: Kennedy’s Commission on the Status of Women produced a report in 1963 that revealed, among other things, that women earned 59 cents for every dollar that men earned and were kept out of the more lucrative professional positions.

Keep her job if she was pregnant.Until the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in 1978, women were regularly fired from their workplace for being pregnant.

Refuse to have sex with her husband.The mid 70s saw most states recognize marital rape and in 1993 it became criminalized in all 50 states. Nevertheless, marital rape is still often treated differently to other forms of rape in some states even today.

Get a divorce with some degree of ease.Before the No Fault Divorce law in 1969, spouses had to show the faults of the other party, such as adultery, and could easily be overturned by recrimination.

Have a legal abortion in most states.The Roe v. Wade case in 1973 protected a woman’s right to abortion until viability.

Take legal action against workplace sexual harassment. According to The Week, the first time a court recognized office sexual harassment as grounds for legal action was in 1977.

Play college sports Title IX of the Education Amendments of protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal financial assistance It was nt until this statute that colleges had teams for women’s sports

Apply for men’s Jobs The EEOC rules that sex-segregated help wanted ads in newspapers are illegal. This ruling is upheld in 1973 by the Supreme Court, opening the way for women to apply for higher-paying jobs hitherto open only to men.

I just want to reiterate this stuff, because I legit get the feeling there are a lot of younger women for whom it hasn’t really sunk in what it is today’s GOP is actively trying to return to.

Did you go to a good college? Shame on you, you took a college placement that could have gone to a man who deserves and needs it to support or prepare for his wife & children. But if you really must attend college, well, some men like that, you can still get married if you focus on finding the right man.

Got a job? Why? A man could be doing that job. You should be at home caring for a family. You shouldn’t be taking that job away from a man who needs it (see college, above). You definitely don’t have a career – you’ll be pregnant and raising children soon, so no need to worry about promoting you.

This shit was within living memory. I’M A MILLENIAL and my mother was in the second class that allowed women at an Ivy League school. Men who are alive today either personally remember shit like this or have parents/family who have raised them into thinking this was the way America functioned back in the blissful Good Old Days. There are literally dudes in the GOP old enough to remember when it was like this and yearn for those days to return.

When people talk about resisting conservativism and the GOP, we’re not just talking about whether the wage gap is a myth or not. We’re talking about whether women even have the fundamental right to exist as individuals, to run their own households and compete for jobs and be considered on an equal footing with men in any arena at all in the first place.

I was a child in the 1960s, a teenager in the 1970s, a young adult in the 1980s. This is what it was like: When I was growing up, it was considered unfortunate if a girl was good at sports. Girls were not allowed in Little League. Girls’ teams didn’t exist in high school, except at all-girls’ high schools. Boys played sports, and girls were the cheerleaders. People used to ask me as a child what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said I wanted to be a brain surgeon or the first woman justice on the Supreme Court. Everyone told me it was impossible–those just weren’t realistic goals for a girl–the latter, especially, because you couldn’t trust women to judge fairly and rationally, after all. In the 1960s and 1970s, all women were identified by their marital status, even in arrest reports and obituaries. In elementary school, my science teacher referred to Pierre Curie as DOCTOR Curie and Marie Curie as MRS. Curie…because, as he put it, “she was just his wife.” (Both had doctorates and both were Nobel prize winners, so you would think that both would be accorded respect.) Companies could and did require women to wear dresses and skirts. Failure to do could and did get women fired. And it was legal. It was also legal to fire women for getting married or getting pregnant. The rationale was that a woman who was married or who had a child had no business working; that was what her husband was for. Aetna Insurance, the biggest insurance company in America, fired women for all of the above. A man could rape his wife. Legally. I can remember being twelve years old and reading about legal experts actually debating whether or not a man could actually be said to coerce his wife into having sex. This was a serious debate in 1974. The debate about marital rape came up in my law school, too, in 1984. Could a woman be raped by her husband? The guys all said no–a woman got married, so she was consenting to sex at all times. So I turned it around. I asked them if, since a man had gotten married, that meant that his wife could shove a dildo or a stick or something up his ass any time she wanted to for HER sexual pleasure. (Hey, I thought it was reasonable. If one gender was legally entitled to force sex on the other, then obviously the reverse should also be true.) The male law students didn’t like the idea. Interestingly, they commented that being treated like that would make them feel like a woman. My reaction was, “Thank you for proving my point…” The concept of date rape, when first proposed, was considered laughable. If a woman went out on a date, the argument of legal experts ran, sexual consent was implied. Even more sickening was the fact that in some states–even in the early 1980s–a man could rape his daughter…and it was no worse than a misdemeanor. Women taking self-defense classes in the 1970s and 1980s were frequently described in books and on TV as “cute.” The implication was that it was absurd for a woman to attempt to defend herself, but wasn’t it just adorable for her to try? I was expressly forbidden to take computer classes in junior and senior years of high school–1978-79 and 1979-80–because, as the principal told me, “Only boys have to know that kind of thing. You girls are going to get married, and you won’t use it.” When I was in college–from 1980 to 1984–there were no womens’ studies. The idea hadn’t occurred in many places because the presumption was that there was nothing TO study. My history professor–a man who had a doctorate in history–informed me quite seriously that women had never produced a noted painter, sculptor, composer, architect or scientist because…wait for it…womens’ brains were too small. (He was very surprised when I came up with a list of fifty women gifted in the arts and science, most of whom he had never heard of before.) When Walter Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro as a running mate in 1984, the press hailed it as a disaster. What would happen, they asked fearfully, if Mondale died and Ferraro became president? What if an international crisis arose and she was menstruating? She could push the nuclear button in a fit of PMS! It would be the end of the WORLD!! …No, they WEREN’T kidding. On the surface, things are very different now than they were when I was a child, a teen and a young adult. But I’m afraid that people now do not realize what it was like then. I’ve read a lot of posts from young women who say that they are not feminists. If the only exposure to feminism they have is the work of extremists, I cannot blame them overmuch. I wish that I could tell them what feminism was like when it was new–when the dream of legal equality was just a dream, and hadn’t even begun to come true. When “woman’s work” was a sneer–and an overt putdown. When people tut-tutted over bright and athletic girls with the words, “Really, it’s a shame she’s not a boy.” That lack of feminism wasn’t all men opening doors and picking up checks. A lot of it was an attitude of patronizing contempt that hasn’t entirely died out, but which has become less publicly acceptable. I wish I could make them feel what it was like…when grown men were called “men” and grown women were “girls.”

I am 70. I remember all those things. I was a student nurse from 64 to 67 and we were not permitted to “finish” a bed bath on a male or insert a catheter in a male. Seeing male genitals might cause us “harm” or upset our delicate sensibilities. Imagine when we graduated and were “thrown” to the wolves. Imagine if you were a male patient who had to be the first to be “practiced” on by a graduate nurse. (Ha!) At the school I attended no student nurse could be married. Only one school in my city (Atlanta) would even admit married women and Male Nurses weren’t even thought of. What man would want to be a nurse when he could be a Doctor. In all my training I only remember 3 or 4 Women who were Doctor’s and a very few, (less than 5 or 6) female interns or residents (and this was a teaching hospital) and most of those were OB/Gyns and one was a pediatrician.

When I graduated and was going to get married I wanted to go on birth control pills. You needed to be on them for a least one cycle before they were effective. I won’t go into what hoops I had to jump through to get a prescription from my Dr. (a man, natch) but when i went to the drug store to get the prescription filled I ended up having to get my future husband to “accompany” me so the pharmacist “interview” him and see if it was okay with him for me to be on the pill.

Even when we went to get a marriage license I had to get my Father’s signature and we had to go before a Judge because I was not yet 21 (I was 20 and 9 months).

I could go on and on, getting a credit card in MY name, etc., but I will tell you that WE MUST RESIST.

Labour union protections.

A radical restructuring of police departments’ vice unit that would now protect sex-workers from violent clients and investigate crimes– such as rape, battery and murder– committed against sex-workers, and ensure that all sex workers are legal adults who are in the industry of their own volition and not the victims of human-trafficking, pimping or grooming, and all participants pornographic media (and sexual “transactions"😑😒) are legal adults who can freely–without fear of retaliation–withdraw consent, safely leave and have any of their videos or photos– even back when they consented– be deleted from all media platforms.

Legally prohibiting registered sex offenders and those with a history of domestic violence from attempting to patronize sex workers (ie: background checks prior “transactions"😑).

And provide a social service department specifically devoted to helping sex-workers transition out of the sex industry.

And yet all the sex-work-is-real-work-rabble do is fly into histrionics, claiming that any sort of government interference and public health oversight of sex work is “slut-shaming”, “infringing upon freedom of speech” or “literally killing sex-workers"😑

@lesbeamofsunshine there are extensive personal records that you can see on the Library of Congress archive! for example, this is her daybook that she tracked her expenses in while working for the Anti-Slavery Society. I can't find this specific diary entry on the LOC website, but working with Harriet Tubman to get a slave into Canada for the Underground Railroad is also from her personal diary. The excerpt was published in this biography. That book was published 1898, so there were plenty of people who could have disputed this and I can't find evidence of that.

She wanted universal suffrage. The quote that she "would sooner cut off her right hand than ask the ballot for the black man" is a deliberate misquote. the full quote says "for the black man and not for the woman," obviously meaning she would not be content to only advocate for black men, not that she didn't want them to have the vote at all.

Okay non-European tumblr, I’m gonna explain to you why ‘white’ isn’t as simple here as it is in the rest of the world

- Shades of white in Europe range from ‘freshly fallen snow’ to ‘I am frequently mistaken as being from the Middle East’

- White European is a thing. When you fill out a form, under ethnicity, there are several options for white; white British, white European, white other. Because people make that distinction

- There are Europeans who don’t class their ethnicity as their skin colour, but as their nationality. I have family who don’t think of themselves as white, they just think of themselves as Italian and don’t really give much thought to their skin colour

- People here in Britain always question if darker skinned white Europeans are ‘actually white’. I get it a lot myself. My response is always ‘well I’m not anything else, so obviously I must be’

- Despite being white, a lot of Europeans from Italy, Greece, Spain etc, don’t feel white in the traditional sense. We’re not white like white British people. We’re not white like white Americans. We’re our own white. White British is one thing. White Italian is another thing. White Greek is another, etc

- Which is why we have this notion here in Europe of ‘nationality over race’. Being white isn’t as important as where you’re from

- So this really only becomes an issue if you’re an immigrant

- So being white in Europe doesn’t save you from racial discrimination, because sure, you’re technically white, but you’re not white white. Not the right white

- Here in England, Europeans with really blatantly foreign names, such as myself, find it more difficult to get job interviews, because they take one look at our name and don’t bother reading the rest of the CV. A guy I know was actually told by his boss to reduce the pile of CVs he had by ‘chucking away any with a name you can’t fucking pronounce’

- And then even when you do get an interview, half the time you walk into the joint several shades darker than everyone else and feel like you’ve walked into the ‘Swedish supermodel’ clubhouse and you just know you’re not getting hired

This is all basic stuff and it’s very much taken for granted here. Race and ethnicity are not as clear cut, so it can be very confusing for non-Europeans to wrap their heads around. Which is fine. But I implore you to stay in your lane, because when you say things like ‘no white person anywhere in the world ever knows what it’s like to face racial discrimination’, it’s really fucking offensive to all of the European immigrants who are denied jobs, harassed by the police and beaten by racists, because foreign is foreign to these people, and they don’t give a shit if you’re technically white. So when you mean white American, say white American.

But as somebody who has lived in England and the US, I can vouch for all of this. The race issues in Europe and the race issues in the US are not the same.

For the last few years, there has been an awful backlash against immigrants from Poland, with some of the same language used that Americans use about “Mexicans” (By which, half the time, they mean anyone from south of the US/Mexico border).

It’s worth understanding that

1. Racism and discrimination are everywhere.

2. They don’t take the same form everywhere.

I have lived in England for over 10 years now, and can confirm all of the above. As soon as I open my mouth people can tell, of course, that I was not born and raised British.

I was yelled at in the street because a lady thought I was Polish. People have pushed their chairs into my parents and insulted them in a restaurant because they were recognised as Germans.

Being white is not that cut and dry over here.

About discrimination between nations in Europe, speaking Finnish and Sami languages in schools in Sweden was forbidden from students because Finns and Sami people were considered to be the lower race. Of course Europe has racism against black people, but yes, thinking about Europeans being “white” as whole is weird because a white Finn and a white Greek person couldn’t be more apart with their cultures.

Yes, all of this, and let’s not forget people like the Finnish speaking Finns have historically and from some cultural standpoints a lot more common with native Americans and the Asians and Blacks in America than white Americans, despite our recent “rise” in the social rank of race.

Less than 100 years ago we were considered mongoloid (and while it’s not entirely wrong, though Uralic or North-West Asian and Caucasian mix would be lot more accurate), and were oppressed by another nation (Russia) that tried to enforce cultural and linguistic genocide on us, and before that we were oppressed and practically enslaved by Sweden, not all that differently as in any other colonized nation–which we were for 800 years.

For all intents and purposes, our “whites” are the Swedish-speaking Finns, who to this day continue to be a lot more privileged than the Finnish-speaking Finns, on average.

In Italy, Southern people are considered less than Northern people and I, as a Northern people, can assure you sometimes it’s pretty bad. Mostly thanks to an idiotic right wing party that thinks that Italy should be divided in two: over the Po and below the Po (our longest river). They even think our ancestors are Celts lmao. Also a lot of people from the South are “less white” (again it’s stupid but whatever it’s just to make you understand), because they have ancestors from Africa so they are mixed, therefore their skin isn’t white as snow.

Also in Italy people from slavic countries are often victim to xenophobia, people are always ready to see romanians/albanian/russians…etc as culprits for everything, and it’s not unusual to hear someone says “this hairstyle makes you look like an albanian!” or “why are you going out dressed as a romanian” yeah they use slavic people as an insult bc people are led to think that they come here just to steal everything from us. And guess what most of them are white as snowflakes!

I’d like to point out that also italian people have faced discrimination from other european countries. We were, and sadly often still are, always seen as part of the mafia and therefore dangerous, or inferior and poor (y’all can find signs saying pretty nasty stuff online, and i’m leaving this here even tho it’s in Italian), i’ve heard a lady telling his son to stay away from me and my family because we were speaking italian and so we could do “bad things” to him and there were times when in shops we were made feel not welcome because we are italian…..and guess what my family is white.

So please when you are outside the us don’t try to apply your “racial standards” bc they are not valid in europe.

The Scottish, Irish, and Welsh are “white” peoples yet have a long history of oppression by white England. Even to this day you’ll hear celebs from those places (which are in the UK or even on the same island as England) discuss the same things as a POC actor in America, like “there are very few roles for us on TV” or “I only got the job because I changed my name and accent” and “I’ve had to play a servant or a stereotype for most of my career.”

This discrimination may seem less bizarre to Americans when you understand that the white minorities of the UK are descendants of peoples who lived there long before the Romans marched in and set English history as we know it in motion. It’s not about skin color, it’s about conquest, as usual.

When Heroes first came out in Australia, I was watching it with my then-partner, my sister, and a couple of friends. My then-partner, who is American, mentioned that the show had faced criticism because nearly all the main characters were white.

“What are you talking about?” say my sister and I. ‘There are two Italian guys RIGHT THERE.”

“OMG you cannot say Italian people are not white,” he says.

“Yes we fucking can,” says the Italian friend watching the show with us, deeply offended.

And then we had to pause it and a lot of complex explanations ensued. (Including the fact that Greek and Italian people generally aren’t considered White in Australia and in fact many a Nonna will smack you if you suggest otherwise.)

Basically, ‘white’ is a category upon which no two cultures/countries can agree on the definition, they all think they have the only possible definition, and it usually boils down to Preferred Flavours of Bigotry.

I mean, I’m of sufficiently Irish descent not to have been considered White in New York at certain periods, and I’m so pink and white I couldn’t get stopped at an airport if I tried, so basically it’s all bullshit and ‘white’ is like ‘normal’… everyone thinks they know what it is, but it doesn’t actually exist except as a tool for dividing people up into The Good Ones and The Rubbish Ones.

When it comes to ethnicity in the Netherlands, we used to have two catergories: ‘autochtoon’ and ‘allochtoon’. ‘Autochtoon’ means ‘from your own country’, or that both your parents were born in the Netherlands. ‘Allochtoon’ is anyone who has at least one parent born outside of the Netherlands. Even if you were born here, grew up here, you’re an allochtoon. Your children won’t be, as long as you marry a ‘native’ Dutch person.

The kicker is that our royal family has been allochtoon for generations. Our reigning queen is from Argentina, so our princesses are all allochtoon.

Except the government now changed the terminology, because ‘allochtoon had negative connotations’ (go figure). It’s now ‘people with a migration background’, but the term still functions the same. The government is still profiling these people more heavily for tax and social benefits fraud, especially the ‘people with a non-western migration background’, which is a whole different can of worms.

‘Non-western migration background’ is not as straight forward as you’d think. Indonesia, for example, is considered western, because it used to be a Dutch colony. But Curacao is not considered a western country, even though it’s still part of the Dutch kingdom. The government’s categories of western and non-western have more to do with how close you are to the equator than whether you are West or East on the map.

He also brags about how cheap she was to acquire. And how she "never has headache" a.k.a. never refuses him for sex.

All in all, I am disgusted by this man openly bragging about engaging in human trafficking.

If you're unfamiliar with how mail order brides are a form of human trafficking, this is a good opportunity to educate yourself!

A Public Interest Law Reporter paper, "In the Name of ‘Love’: Mail Order Brides-The Dangerous Legitimization of Sex, Human and Labor Trafficking,” notes that websites promoting mail order brides “project the stereotypical image of a Filipino woman being sweet, submissive, traditional, virginal, Christian, and familiar with the English language, making them the most popular ethnic group for mail order brides in the world.” The Public Interest Law Reporter paper noted that “mail order brides are often subject to physical and sexual abuse once they arrive in the U.S., which they are especially vulnerable to due to their immigration status.” They must remain married for a minimum of two years to be viable to receive a green card. For many men, two years is the most they plan on having them for, giving them a playground to wreac emotional, physical, and sexual havoc. When one leaves, they order a new one.

The women are a tremendously profitable cash crop for marriage brokering agencies. Victoria I. Kusel notes in the Albany Government Law Review that mail order bride agencies earn between $6,000 and $10,000 per client; some agencies claim to service as many as 15,000 clients each year.

Many of the men seeking out this service are considerably older than the women they contract to marry, though some agencies encourage their clients to stay within a 20-year difference in age. (X)

The prevalence of abuse against mail order brides prompted Congress to pass the Federal International Marriage Broker Regulation Act in 2005, which requires all marriage visa sponsors to undergo background checks and puts a limit on serial visa applications.

The regulations were passed into law in response to the 1995 murder of 24-year-old Filipina mail order bride Susana Blackwell in Washington State. Susana fled after less than two weeks of marriage, citing violent physical abuse. Her 47-year-old husband subsequently applied for a legal annulment, which would have led to her deportation. Susana responded by filing for divorce under the battered wife exception that would have allowed her to remain in the U.S. By the time of their divorce case was ready, Susana was eight months pregnant.

She and two other Filipina friends sat in the hallway of the King County Courthouse, waiting for the hearing to commence when her estranged husband walked up to the trio and shot each woman point blank in the head and chest. He is currently serving out a life sentence for the 1st degree murder of the three women and the manslaughter of Susana’s unborn child.

A 2012 revision of the Violence Against Women Act that would have helped mail order brides by allowing abused immigrant women to self-petition for protected immigration status was blocked by House Republicans; as The Huffington Post reported, pressure was exerted in part by the president of a mail order bride company.

The industry of mail order brides is exploitive. It promises a better life to young foreign women, then marries them off (at a profit) to older men who, for whatever reason, could not find a partner without paying for one. These women are then isolated, expected to perform sexually for their new husbands, and are legally required to remain in the marriage for 2 years. That's two years of sexual and domestic slavery, with the threat of an unhappy husband = deportation.

The mail order bride industry is human trafficking.

FOR REAL. There is a right wing/conservative "tradwife" woman who has a YouTube channel called "Classically Abby". (I believe she is a close relative of Ben Shapiro, a borderline far-right political commentator.) She became known because of advertisements of her channel, that showed up on videos/for people who obviously don't align with her beliefs (think gay gender nonconforming man).

There was a post of screenshots floating around of her Twitter replies. People were putting the aheago hentai face and other suggestive or outright sexual images&comments. Even more repulsive is a screenshot of a facebook post of hers. Men were spamming "mmmm nice feet" "sexy toes" something to that affect in a post about modesty where she had bare feet.

These leftist men make me sick, I remember seeing elsewhere that a woman never saw the true misogyny of the left until Melania Trump entered the mainstream.

this is going to be a rant but. let me just get in my feelings real quick about this photo.

This was a self-portrait, by Francis Benjamin Johnston, taken in 1839!!! It's called The Rebel, for obvious reasons. Every aspect of this image was pre-conceived and staged, from the intermingling of "masculine" and "feminine" (I know) objects, to the portraits (taken by her) of well-known, respectable men looking at her from the mantle, and of course her pose on a box in front of a fire. 1839!!! AND she was posing with her skirt up, her legs showing, slouched over and smoking!! There were sooo many handbooks written by male photographers from this era detailing how the Victorian Lady should pose and it was always hands clasped and legs closed beneath long skirts, to take up as little room as possible. She subverted all of that by parodying the male gaze. By being both photographer and photographed, she is inverting the photographic rules of the time period, which cast women as the thing that is passively looked at, is the subject of the male gaze, not the one who is doing the looking. She is completely in control of the narrative and tryinggg to show you, through this photo, how all of these conventions and constructs are all artificial. How fucking cool is this photograph! Also she it's documented that she was romantically involved with a woman named Mattie Edwards Hewitt who was a photographer as well! we love a 19th-century LGBTQ trailblazing photographer!!!
