He ate the devil fruit while he was out at sea; he was unaware that it was a devil fruit, thinking that the food was just spoiled
—> this was not an unreasonable assumption on his part; there was little food on the boat to begin with, most of which having already started to go bad by the time he ate the fruit
Was picked up by a passing Marine vessel, though in his fatigue he attacked, thinking they were to harm him
—> the ensuing fight revealed he ate a devil fruit
Ended up becoming a Marine cadet, serving with the Navy as a fighter/ship-right for twelve years, until he was 26
By this point, he was aware of the corruption that was in the organization
Ended up abandoning the Marines when one of his missions required him to dismantle a ship carrying innocents
