This is the first time this has been on my dash since learning about how this happens, so I guess I have to face my fear of commenting on things and explain!

If I remember correctly, some of this comes from Cockney rhyming slang. There’s a whole song about it in Mary Poppins Returns that Lin-Manuel Miranda sings about it if that’s more enticing.

So using Richard as an example, maybe you’d normally call him Rick. But in Cockney rhyming slang, you’d call him something other than that, but that rhymes, so Dick.

For Margaret, I’m guessing the path that takes is Mag/Maggie>Meg/Meggy>Peg/Peggy.

I couldn’t tell you what happened to John/Jack or James/Jimmy, though.

Of course, it’s been a while since I’ve read up on this, so some of this could be wrong. If anyone notices any mistakes please feel free to point them out/correct me!

So I’m sure that quite a few of you have seen the new merch by now, and among the core four’s new shirt designs we also have this one, which represents Thomas:

What’s immediately interesting here is the orange flower. It’s pretty easy to see that each flower represents a side, so this pretty much confirms that we have exactly one remaining unknown side left, the orange one.

overanalyzing the fuck out of things is absolutely my jam. lemme jump on this flower-identification train!

first up, i suspect Remus’s flower is actually a green chrysanthemum! 

I don’t know if this has any actual significance, because everything I can find about them seems to indicate that they represent optimism and joy. 

and re: Dee’s flower - sunflowers can represent loyalty and longevity. also happiness. and to me, that makes some amount of sense! lie to yourself to make yourself happy and all that. Someone on a server I’m on also pointed out that it may be a black-eyed susan or false sunflower. 

I don’t have anything else at the moment, I’m afraid - I’m just very into this.

actually no i do have something else. that orange flower? i think i recognize it. it’s a lantana. 

lantanas have all sorts of fun meanings in flower language, but the main one i could track down is ‘I am unyielding’. Which is definitely a very fun sentiment that isn’t ominous at all. They also are associated with rigor (and are used as a treatment for sexual dysfunction - don’t know if that’s relevant, but) and are an invasive weed.

All of which bodes really well for our dear Mysterious Unrevealed Orange Side. For once, I’m really hesitant to put forward a theory, but if I had to guess, I’d probably be leaning towards something lust or obsession related? Almost certainly something that springs up and is very hard to get rid of. Considering how out-of-nowhere Remus was (i don’t think anybody predicted that he was going to be Dark Creativity/Intrusive Thoughts) I can pretty much safely say that anything I speculate on is going to be proven wrong.

I looked into lantanas a bit and tbh I probably should’ve included them, but I couldn’t find a great way to interpret the symbolism and I was low key kinda rushing lol. But they definitely fit the picture, and this is a great analysis! I’ve also had people suggest that they can represent stubbornness, and that combined with invasiveness could tie into a few traits — especially anger or obsession.

Also, green crystyanthemums seem to fit Remus’ flower much better picture-wise, and they apparently represent death, adversity, grief, and honesty according to Wikipedia. All of which fit him pretty well, so I’m willing to accept that as his flower.

Deceit’s being a “false sunflower” would work just for that name, and tbh I totally should’ve looked into other flowers. At the time I just decided it was a sunflower and moved on. Though, it has been pointed out to me that sunflowers can also mean “false riches,” so there’s a bit more credence to that theory, and your analysis makes a lot of sense as well.

Can I just say??? You’ve all been SO FLIPPING AMAZING with this so far?? I haven’t gotten many commissions but some of you have been so unbelievably kind and have donated what you could. Be it $3 or simply a reblog, I appreciate each and every one.

I’m dropping my car off to an autobody shop on Monday. I have to pay them $500 by the time they are done to get my car back. I actually have maybe almost half? You have helped tremendously! But I still need a bit more, so commissions are going to remain open until I get my car back!
