my mom is helping me job hunt and when i told her my dream job is to sit in one place and sort stuff by color all day she made a really disgusted face and said “you want to work on a fucking assembly line?” like yeah
not to philosophize on your personal post or whatever but this really illustrates the problem with capitalism because there's literally nothing wrong with working in an assembly line—other than, of course, the way the workers are treated.
you (and me, let's be honest, because i would love to have a job like that) not only deserve to sort things by color all day but to also be treated with dignity and get paid a thriving wage for that work, and i am so very confused by why that's a controversial statement.
the best job i ever had was making cushions for packages out of tissue paper. just over and over and over again. i had the best time doing that. it just would have been nice if it wasn't ten hour shifts without air conditioning or seating.
hello neil gaiman im gonna be honest i dont know shit about you but i just started a new job in a bookstore warehouse and my god you have so many books so very many books you have like 8 shelves full thats so many books good for u
Thank you.
I did my thesis on eugenics and forced sterilization in Canadian history (indigenous specific) and the next cis woman to say that men should collectively be forced to get vasectomies for points on some kind imaginary scoreboard of rights is getting sent a copy of the records I had to sift thru of men, mostly indigenous, racialized, developmentally disabled, or poor men, being sterilized against their wills and often without their knowledge.
I once again must remind people that "don't like abortion, get a vasectomy" isn't the gotcha you think it is, and that reproductive justice means supporting people who are targeted by the state both for forced birth AND for sterilization and child apprehension, as they're linked closely.
Tired: finding a sealed tomb from Egypt or some other non white culture and declaring it cursed
Wired: doing the same for the catholics
Listen, they found a sealed sarcophagus made of lead, buried under a centuries-old cathedral in an ancient city built above catacombs lined with human bones. If that doesn’t sound cursed to you, I don’t know what will!
I just think we should crack it open and display it in the wrong country. For fairness
“I don’t think that I accepted that I wasn’t gonna die young until I was 26 or 27. I really don’t think I fully…when I was 14, 15, 16, 17–I mean I knew as sure as I know that I am wearing green shoes that I was going to die before much happened. It was a certainty for me. And I had shaken off the directly suicidal urge by the time I was 21 or 22, but I still was pretty sure I was going to die pretty young, it really felt like an inevitability. It takes a long time to realize no, you’ve changed…if you shared those feelings with people at some point you go, ‘well, I guess we’re going to stick around.’ And it’s a funky thing to admit because there’s a part of your inner younger self that kind of judges you for that.”
John Darnielle fucking me up with the single most relatable thing he’s ever said
reminds me of when he was about to play werewolf gimmick in 2015 and
“[Audience member: Live hard, die young!] Yeah, it’s a little too late for that, man. It’s easy for you to say. I have news for you: sometimes… sometimes it turns out the slogan you didn’t know you were living by was ‘live hard, live long.’ The slogan begins to stretch: ‘live hard, live long, feel pain, go on. Wake up, keep going, keep going, keep going. Grow old, keep going, outlive all friends, last man alive, unending desert, so many stars, limitless, endless stars, throne standing alone in the desert, and yourself [inaudible]…'”
Are you guys aware of chimney swifts??
They’re in the same order as hummingbirds and, in some positions, you can see the resemblance
But like… a hummingbird that’s cosplaying as a falcon.
Sleek. Efficient. Aerodynamic. Perfectly optimized.
Also they like to sleep in chimneys, hence the name, and when they perch they become very very flat
They also like to sleep in groups
Anyway 10/10 weird little beast. Love these little flat fuck hummingbird falcons
they roost in my chimney during the summer and every now and then one will be particularly stupid and fly into my house
A charming invasion, at least. Much better than stink bugs.
I love them.
Others have said it better and more eloquently, but the LGBT community has a massive fear and disgust of masculinity it needs to reckon with in order to be whole. Bears, transmascs, masculine enbies, AMAB enbies, butch lesbians, masc intersex folk, drag kings, and those who find themselves in some fluid space between them or are masc in ways I’ve left out - they all need support from the LGBT community, they all have the same traumas from being queer, and all of them that I’ve met have some horror story about hitting the ‘must be this femme to ride’ bar.
You can be gnc and masculine. This needs to be embraced.
Masculine people are not the enemy. The community needs to be as ready to embrace its brothers as it is its sisters. We are all queer.
"You can't solve climate change as an indivual" is true, but that does not mean you can't do anything to help your local ecosystem.
Find out what plants grow native to your area. iNaturalist.org is a great resource for that. Grow native plants, however the heck you can manage it. It doesn't have to be in the ground. If you can get a five gallon bucket and stab or drill some holes in the bottom and can get potting soil, you can grow a plant in that five gallon bucket.
Put some leaves or twigs or grass clippings on the bottom to keep the dirt from fallout out the holes, add the dirt, then your plant or the seed. If you have it, you can add mulch once your seeds germinate, just make sure not to cover them. If it's a bigger plant already, you can mulch whenever you want.
Find out what butterflies are native to your area. Find out what host plants they use, and you can grow one of their host plants and watch the caterpillars grow up. If monarch butterflies visit your area, find out what species of milkweed are native to your area, and grow one of them! If you put a tomato cage around the plant, it will give the caterpillars something to climb on when they're ready to form a chrysalis :)
Even just one native plant can and will make a difference.
When we lived in Pennsylvanina, one common milkweed seed found its way into the yard and started growing. Once I realized what it was, I made sure no one would pull it up, and let it grow.
This single common milkweed plant attracted:
Large Milkweed bugs
Red Milkweed beetles
Monarch butterflies
Brown-belted bumblebees
Common eastern bumblebees
Eastern carpenter bees
Western honey bees (not native, but still counts)
Marginated Leatherwing beetles
Common buckeye butterflies
Too many wasp species to count
Too many fly species to count
And these are just the species that I could get pictures of and identify, and doesn't even mention the numbers of each of them!
You want to help your local ecosystem? You want to save the bees and other native pollinators?
Figure out what plants are native to your area, and grow them.
(Don't just go to the store and grab a packet of "wildflower mix" because nine times out of ten they'll be filled with non native species. Always check for the scientific names before buying something, because stores and nurseries tend to change the name to make something more desirable to sellers)
The old XMen movies were explicitly set "in the Not Too Distant Future", i.e. like roughly a decade after they were made, and they are VERY MUCH not subtle about Magneto's radicalism being a direct result of having been personally affected by one genocide and seeing the parallels, in contrast with Xavier's having always been privileged and passing-privileged.

Yes. It's extremely blatant, but I'm not going to be too hard on the other anon if they saw them at 10.
As an adult, it finally dawned on me that Fievel Mousekewitz is supposed to be Jewish. Fievel Mousekewitz who escaped Russian pogroms to go live on the Lower East Side. Yeah...
This satire article resonated with me so much
For satire that sure hit me in the gut in the most personal way possible.
hey I wonder what happens if I put powdered milk into carbonated water
my cereal is loud and it's demanding to know why I would sin against both nature and god so thoughtlessly
...how does it taste?
the fizz comes from carbonic acid in the water splitting up into CO₂ and H₂O over time. And carbonic acid is – as an acid – sour.
By adding milk to sour water you've created a very convincing emulation of spoiled milk, so I'll believe in a heartbeat that the taste is Not Great™.
I have mastered the potion: Instant Spoiled Milk, therefore earning the rank of shittiest alchemist currently alive.
BREAKING NEWS
I just learned about a bird species called Golden Plover. Their chicks have an amazing camouflage: their baby fluff resembles MOSS!
LOOK AT THEM! JUST LOOK AT THEM!
...Oh to be a tiny golden plover lying in the moss safe and sound waiting for your mom to bring you some worms...
@normal-horoscopes
ATTENTION: IT IS NOW TIME FOR MOSS
Reminds me of the "Tapera Naevia" aka Striped Cuckoo whose chicks look like Pine Cones, so now we have "Moss Birb" and "Pine Cone Birb"
CONIFEROUS BIRB!!!!
Y'all will be like "alchemy was never really about the chemicals it's all spiritual metaphor" like good job missing the entire point of alchemy
The laws of physics are the fingerprints of the divine, alchemy is the study of the raw immortal essences that make up the world. We are clockwork studying our design so that we may understand our maker.
For most of western history it literally was not considered possible to study the physical world without it being religious in some manner. "It was never about the chemicals." It's literally never not been about the chemicals. The spirituality in alchemy is based on observation of the chemicals.
You get me.
[ID: # fucken new age spiritualists think u can just distill out Pure Metaphor or some shit # as if you don't live in the real world # as if your body is not a map of the cosmos

Why would then they try to transmutate lead into gold and not fucking iron? Iron is a lot more common, bit plumber is literally the easier thing to transmutate because it only has 3 prottons more, and iron like 60 less . Someone probably even had a particle accelerator in the basement.
Gold was the highest metal in the spiritual hierarchy, the "closest" to god. Lead was the lowest, the furthest from god. Transmutation of lead to gold, in the eyes of the alchemists, would represent mastery over the whole of physical matter.
So it was a generally agreed upon litmus test of skill? Like the way that I set the goal of ‘throwing a successful party’ as a personal litmus test for social literacy.
Well nobody actually achieved it. It was a theoretical goal, like attempting to split the atom.
