Hey all! Been living the Twilight Renaissance recently and I did a painting for a scene from the lovely @donnotknow123 's fanfic which pretty much retools twilight and focuses on Charlie (and carlisle ofc). Looking back over the chapter, I did accidentally move the setting for this particular scene which was supposed to be a quiet office, not a living room, whoopsie...

Anyways, words can't describe how much I enjoy this fic but please heed the trigger warnings! [[link for the fic is as the bottom of the post!]] The fancast for this version of charlie is Dylan O'brian so I tried to follow that lol (his face is honestly quite difficult to paint but i think i got there in the end!)

Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest

Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people

dodge questions

answer indirectly

lie (badly)

change the subject

crack jokes to avoid serious answers

lie (convincingly)

say half of what they mean

tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying

If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.

Subtext is where tension lives.

The best advice I ever got, and thusly, I think, the reason I always get compliments on my dialogue, is this:

Your two characters are having a conversation, but each one is having a different conversation. They should always reply to what they think the other person is saying, and they should always be wrong about their assumption.

Now, obviously, like any writing advice, this rule is meant to be broken. Any writing advice you are given is more like... a guideline.

I think that banana bread is a very hobbit-like food. I could imagine Bilbo having a slice with his tea. The thing is I cannot for the life of me imagine a fucking banana in Middle-Earth. They don’t belong there. Solution: banana bread just spawns in the Shire and no one fucking knows where it comes from

Why is it always about Orpheus turning back foolishly and never about Eurydice following him out of the Underworld, likely knowing she was doomed. That Orpheus went all this way, singing the story of their love, hopeful that he will return her to the surface and finally build their life together— but they will not. She knows her Orpheus will turn back. And yet she still follows him, all the way to the top, because the simple pleasure of seeing his back again is enough for her. Isn’t that a foolish thing to do for love?
