No, I'm gonna give more context because this was wild to me. Coworker A asked if she (straight) should start calling her long-term boyfriend "her partner" instead to indicate a more committed relationship. Coworker B (bisexual) started talking about how many people don't like it when straight people do that bc you're taking their word. They think if you're straight, you should use your own word (boyfriend) bc no one judges you for that.

Is this a thing people are actually truly offended by?? I've seen posts mentioning vaguely existing discourse about it, but this was a real conversation. What.

Queer person in their 40s weighing in here. Straight people using the term partner was encouraged in the 90s and 2000s to help normalize the use of the term. This is an important part of our history because up until 3 years ago states could allow employers to fire people over sexual orientation. The Supreme Court didn't weigh in and say this violates federal law until 2020

Using and normalizing the word partner allowed queer people to speak more freely at work without outing themselves. If straight people were saying "Sorry, I can't work late because my partner is waiting for me" then queer people could say that too. There are still many, many reasons why a person may not want to out themselves which is why it's good for partner to be normalized and used by everyone

As people (including straight people) started using partner more they also discovered the unexpected benefit of it reducing the uncomfortable prying into relationships. If someone (especially a woman) refers to their partner by a title like boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband, etc people tend to feel entitled to ask questions and demand details about the relationship. It's extremely common for a woman who says she has a boyfriend to be asked things like "How long have you been dating? When are you going to get married? You're getting old, don't you think it's time to settle down?" But partner is such a general term that people don't know if its a serious relationship or a casual thing, and they don't feel as entitled to pry

Everyone who wants to use partner should be free to do so. It benefits all of us in so many ways
