Im really torn between the fact that my favorite set of all time Will be seeing the light of the day again ( lorwyn) and my gut feelings of how It Will be fucked up by the new superbland mediocre art style and the real world politic agenda ( not so) subtly pushed in late sets, in a CARD GAME. We want to see stories of faeries, kithkins, elves, goblins, Giants,merfolk and cinders in their beautiful fantasy setting, no trans they/them faeries that think they're kithkins

Two points:

1) When returning to a world, we’re very cognizant of the aesthetic of the world. We understand returning to Lorwyn requires embracing what made people love it the first time around. Obviously, there will be updates, as the game has evolved much since our first visit, but we’re very aware of the need to recapture the plane’s essence.

2) For far too long, fantasy, as a genre, was used as a way to reflect the worldview of those in power. It leaned into stereotype and reflected how the privileged wished the world was. Modern fantasy is more reflective of the actual world, which includes the wide variety of life experiences that exists.

Trans people, people of color, and women playing a larger role, are all part of modern fantasy because they’re all part of the actual world, and it’s important that our stories and world building be reflective of that.

“I want to return to a time where we could ignore the existence of certain elements because I was happy living in that ignorance” is not an excuse to deny real people and their real life experiences.

Entertainment is at its best when it lifts everyone up and isn’t used as yet another means to ignore certain people’s reality.

Astarion was one of my most ambitious leatherwork projects to date, and guess what--I still want to do more!

Future upgrades will probably include the asymmetrical shoulder pieces that come with a version of the drow armour set, and possibly sprucing up the pants and doing new bootcovers (these are some of my Loki ones, oops)

I'm especially pleased with the shapes of the gloves; it was a little mind-bending to pattern them but they ended up working really well!

I know I don't shut up about this but frankly not enough people are angry about the 5-day/40 hour workweek (and I am AWARE a lot of people work even more than that). I feel like a lot more people should be absolutely furious that we only really have two days a week and some occasional hours in the evening to socialise, run errands, do chores, or relax.

It's no wonder so many people are profoundly lonely and disconnected from their communities when maintaining a social life in what little free time we have is incredibly difficult. If you have kids, a second job, a very long commute, or other responsibilities, it's nearly impossible.

We literally aren't meant to live like this and I'll never stop being shocked how many people just take it as the natural state of things and don't want to throw a brick through a billionaire's window every time they think of it.

What a weekend! @phoenixfanfusion was amazing! I didn’t take enough photos but it was so fun - here are some in my costumes that I did have.

We met Simu Liu, Alan Tudyk, Adam Savage, and Dick Van Dyke which was amazing! they were all so kind and I had a wonderful time. Alan Tudyk also told us that we smell lovely and I’m obsessed - it was so adorable 😆

Okay so this costume is almost done!! I’m currently dying the leather belt because it was a light tan color (I got the leather for free from a furniture store 😈) so I bought a $5 bottle of dye from my local Blick and it’s looking amazing!

The color could probably use one more coat but OH MAN does it work well! The tan on the left is what it was before and the contrast is the black dye. Can’t wait to put the whole costume on!

Okay, I know I acted silly about this, but the fact that there is 1 singular year round roller skating rink in the city of Philadelphia home to 1.6 million people is kinda fucking horrifying when you think about the broader implications of it.

We live in a society without access to third places and those that existed in the past are dying or dead. There aren't cafes on the corner anymore, they are illegal to open with current US zoning laws, there aren't cheap movie theaters anymore, skating rinks are dying out, community centers have been getting shut down or under funded for decades, apart from parks and libraries there are literally no places that people can exist in withoutbeing expected to spend money.

How does a society function without leisure, is not pleasure and happiness what we live for and yet in the capitalistic system, we have destroyed every option people have for recreation without spending because we as a society place profit above all else, and that is tearing away at the societal fabric as we can barely deal with it.

The current loneliness epidemic is a direct result of how we have taken away places for people to exist and replaced them with places to spend money at, you don't try to meet new people while shopping for clothes or furniture, you avoid others. We complain children and teens don't go outside but we have totally removed every single thing for them to do that isn't digital

After a tiny hiatus I’m back! Taking breaks between my big projects seems to help me with my sewing burnout so I’ve been trying to give myself that time to rest. I made this great little wooble in my rest time.

But now for updates! Dark Rey is my next costume and this should be an easy one. It’s half closet cosplay and half sewn cosplay! The base is a sleeveless turtleneck and I’m wearing leggings for the bottoms. BUT I worked on the robes and hood today and so far I’m loving them!

I know that Peter’s Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy technically has flaws but also….it doesn’t. It’s perfect.

This is how I think of Jackson’s movies. Yes, there are serious flaws - Gandalf’s de-powering, Gimli as comic relief, and Faramir, namely - but come on.

Remember when the guys making their chain mail invented a new method for quickly producing large amounts of it by hand? Remember Miranda Otto walking down the street, practicing sword positions? The guys who forged all of the swords - for leads and for extras? The men and women riders who volunteered to be riders of Rohan? The costume designers who designed the inside of Theoden’s armor (which no one would ever see) so beautifully that Bernard Hill said he felt like a king? The friendships between the cast, and their size doubles, and the stuntmen?

When they made that movie, they put all that they loved into all that they made.

they took forced perspective and scaled sets to a new level by adding moving set pieces to create the illusion that the hobbits and dwarves were much smaller than everyone else even when the camera moved.

every scene you see in the 11+ hours of glory that is the LOTR masterpiece is most like ridiculously elaborate or expensive–from model towers to the all-new motion capture technology used for gollum to the costumes and sets to the aerial on location shots of mother-fracking new zealand and the big impressive battle scenes and horse charges.

but then the story and the screenplay too–there is just SO much lore that is there in the background lurking if you want to look for it, yet it still remains simplified for the average viewer. Crazy impressive feat.

And the acting is heartfelt and real and makes you love the characters.

ALSO DON’T GET ME STARTED ON FREAKING HOWARD SHORE AND HIS 100+ HEARTSHATTERINGLY BEAUTIFUL LIETMOTIFS AND BRILLIANT SUBTLE VARIATIONS IN THE FLIPPING 13 HOUR SOUNDTRACK. AND ENYA SINGING IN REAL ELVISH.

There’s so much detail in the costuming that we can’t even see, it’s wild. One of my favourite things I saw on a tour of the WETA collection was seeing a Gondorian sword and on the pommel of the grip, there were concentric rings with a triangle wedge raised about them. They had a representation of frigging Minas Tirith as a part of the sword.
