People prefer saying that El is the main character over Will because they can’t comprehend the idea of a main stream show being centred on a queer character and are incapable of understanding his story and arc towards acceptance
Or maybe his storyline just wasn't written well enough for me to be convinced he was ever supposed to the "Main character over El"
When S1 aired it was meant to be a limited series and was written as such, the story follows The Party looking for thier friend and then finding El. El who leads them to exsistence of the Upside Down and The Demogorgon. The audience then gets to follow El learn how to be a regular kid with the hlpe of the Party while also helping find Will. She forms new bonds, a crush, learns to speak for herself/ advocacy, figures out what makes her feel pretty and of course try new foods. The marketing was around The Party and El, they did promos, posters, and interviews that Noah Schnapp wasn't featured in. And the Duffers are not good enough writers to have planed anything out from the beginning.
I've said this so many times but the idea of having your main character missing for an entire season and we only see them twice in the show is not good writing for a main character.
Will's story is important and impactful to so many people but it is not the center of the show. And it never has been. The show is not about Will overcoming his fears and learning to accept himself, thats just the only plotline they gave him for 3 seasons.
