So, I was working in a lab, right? My job in the lab was preparing a pure, concentrated enough sample of virus. This is tricky since, y'know, viruses require hosts to replicate, but you then need to get the host cells (and the pieces of the host cells that died!) out of the sample while still keeping the viruses. Once I'd finished and the samples had been sent to the database for analysis as well as a second one sent to be frozen for future reference, there was still some left over that needed to be disposed of.

I, knowing that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, waited carefully for the lab director to be deep in conversation with someone else on the other side of the laboratory. And then I took my chance.

Test tubes, as it turns out, are really bad as shot glasses. Their shape turns any liquid inside into a stream, so you really can't knock it back quickly - it takes a couple seconds. Additionally, the best way I can describe the taste of virus concentrate was "sterile rot". A very unique kind of bad! Made worse by the test tube's inefficiency as a shot glass.

(by the way we were studying bacteriophages, not animal viruses. these viruses are too specialized on attacking prokaryotes to even recognize our cells as targets at all, according to studies.)

(but also like. if the viruses managed to successfully switch hosts and killed me with a violent infection, itd still be worth it.)

It really is hilarious because whenever you start your art journey, you watch all the videos and ask artists and they all give tips and help but it all ends up coming down to "you just have to practice".

And it pisses you off because bruh how am I supposed to practice this shit if I can't even do this first couple of fucking lines to make a good cylinder.

And then you start drawing and it sucks and you keep doing it, and you learn new skills and tricks, and you even end up developing an art style naturally (which they told you you would do, and you didn't believe them, but it came free with the constantly drawing in a way that made you comfortable and learning the medium).

And at the end of it all, someone else asks wow how you did all of that, and after all this time of putting in effort you finally have to eat crow and admit that the answer is... Damn... you really have to practice 🤣🤣🤣

I have to put a huge asterisk on here. Yes, practice is VITAL and IRREPLACEABLE. But, new artists have to be taught how to practice. It isn't just drawing the same thing over and over, it's learning about anatomy and proportion and perspective. It's learning how to actually use the tools and materials of art, whether that's charcoal or oil paints or digital art programs. And even with simple basics, a teacher can properly critique a piece, point out areas that need improvement and how to do so.

Obviously a good artists education is something that can help exponentially, especially when it comes to getting specific instructions and personal critiques. And as someone with an arts education it definitely helped me (To an extent, it depends heavily on where you are. Art schools vary in quality and subject matter and a lot of them can be unhelpful depending on what you want to do and learn).

There are thousands upon thousands of hours of tutorials and demos from enthusiasts, to professionals to real art teachers available to people who want to look for them and get better. Both free and courses you can pay for if you wish. There is plenty of professional artists offering hands on critiques as well.

However if you don’t take the time to follow them again and again you won’t learn how to actually apply anything. Practice in this case IS doing the same things over and over again, until it progressively becomes second nature.

And no one artists can truly tell you what will be the best for you, this also comes with trial and error. How you learn will ultimately be specific to you.

What OP is pointing out is that with all these tools provided already what will ultimately decide whether or not you improve is your own effort and time.

And i will underline time because i do believe that will be the biggest issue for new/beginner artists, not being good or understanding something immediately. For a long time you will suck and that’s completely normal and fine.

Like I want to play an instrument but I don’t want to actually learn to play an instrument. A lot of the process is unpleasant, disheartening and kind of boring and I do think it’s a thing with people not wanting to go through that process and hoping for “the thing” that skips it (which is understandable)

And a lot of the time you ARE improving but have a distorted view of your own progress because the internet is a nightmare and youare ruining your brain comparing yourself to others. It's me, I ruin my own brain and I'm not even new at this.

Being a calm, gentle, non-reactive person is really hard work, which is probably why many people are none of these things. Personally I think it’s worth it but sometimes one does want to just roll around on the floor wailing at the top of one’s lungs

So my FIRST piece of information if you’re still a teen is that genuinely as you get older it will get easier to regulate your emotions. During adolescence our brains are undergoing a lot of growth and change that genuinely does make it harder to do this, on a scientific level. However, practicing emotional regulation skills can still help a lot and if you can find something that works it will make life easier going forward

The irony of this new breed of self-righteous AI hunters on AO3 is that they're all just copy and pasting peoples fics into AI detectors, which are all operated by AI and therefore THEY are feeding people's work into the algorithm without their consent and in some cases no doubt circumventing the locks people put on to avoid getting scraped...

Don't copy and paste anyone's AO3 work into third party websites, you're not the good guys in this situation?
