Blue Brew #2!!!-Tezzeret Lock down!

Hello MTG tumblr community, today I’m here to bring you the most soul crushing blue deck I have ever created. The decks main focus is to ramp into as many lock pieces as possible as soon as possible to win the game through artifact fatties or a Jace, the Mind Sculptor with your opponent trapped under an Ensairing Bridge.

In this deck the game plan is to throw Lotus blooms into suspend on turn 1 play land and say go, On turn 2 you want to be playing your chalice on one to lock out burn, discard, cantrips, removal, and any other thing you’d typical see an abundance of in modern, Turn 3 is where things start getting real interesting for this deck. You have the option to play Ensnairing Bridge or vedalken shackles to lock or slow down your opponents attacks along with 3 copies of trinket mage to search out a plethora of 1 drop or less artifacts to make your opponents life miserable and your life easier. In our Trinket Mage package we run Pithing Needle to deal with planeswalkers, creature lands, and any number of activated abilities in modern, Engineered explosives to clear early game permanents from the field, Chalice of the void to lock out interaction with our plan, and mox opal for a boost in free colored mana.

Turn 4 is where things start getting interesting, We have access to so many mana accelerates that by now we can usually cast anything in the deck. Depending on your draw you may play Jace to set up your draws, Tezzeret to answer any one problem, or a large stabilizing creature in the form of wurmcoil engine or Batterskull. Tezzeret is best against decks that focus in winning at one angle, but can solve multiple problems if you’re not in a hurry. Ensnairing bridge locks out attacking, Pithing needle deals with a problem permanent, Orbs of warding blocks out discard, burn, and other target based win cons. Once the opponent is locked down our win cons consist of Jace or Tezzeret, agent of bolas ultimateing.

As far as lands go our mana is fixed by 3 spire of industries and 2 feild of ruins to find our singular swamp. Between our ability to tutor up Mox Opal or already having a lotus bloom in play the deck rarely needs help finding its black splash. The utility lands are rounded out by 2 ghost quarters to kill tron lands and a single Academy Ruins that seems to have won way more games than is should have.

Our side board consists of more hate cards plus the addition of surgical extraction for combo and graveyard based decks, Surgical can also deal with getting rid of problematic cards from the opponent for good such as abrupt decay or ancient grudge.

Over all the deck has a competitive feel to it and rewards the player for knowledge of the format and reading the opponent.

When my eldest daughter Rachel was in her sophomore year of high school, it became clear that she was having problems. She was bouncing off the system and it was leading to depression and low grades. Realizing something had to change, Rachel started studying education. She was eager to find out if there were other ways to learn. What she discovered was an entire other world known as “innovative education”.

The idea behind innovative education is rather than endlessly making students memorize and regurgitate information, it’s a project-based system where the students can craft projects of their own interests and then, with the help of teachers, integrate the education into the task at hand. The idea is that kids learn better if they’re more invested in the process and the practicality of what they’re learning is more visible. The system usually involves some number of days of internships where the students learn skills interacting with the real world. (Also, it doesn’t use traditional letter grades, but rather a system of competency reports.)

Rachel realized that this type of education was what she needed, so she tracked down innovative schools in the Seattle area. Her top choice was a school called Highline Big Picture. It was forty-minutes away from our home. It took some convincing, both of my wife and I and of the school itself, to let her transfer mid-year, but it’s hard to stop Rachel when she gets her mind to something and she managed to convince everyone that it would be for the best. (Regular listeners of “Drive to Work” know I spent over a year driving her to school – she now has her own car.) And it was! Rachel has thrived at the school. She’s now a senior and has recently been accepted to five colleges and wait listed at one (with seven more we’re yet to hear from).

So what does this have to do with Magic or my blog? Well, I wanted to find a way to help out her school. Highline Big Picture is amazing, but it’s in a low income school district and has a lot of financial challenges. That’s when I ran across a cool idea. Magic artists are allowed to sell playmats and prints of their illustrations. It turns out by some weird twist of fate that I actually am a Magic artist (and only by the most technical of definitions). In Unglued, we wanted a “child’s drawing” for one of the cards and I stepped up with the bold claim of “I could be that child!”.

I illustrated the card Look at Me, I’m the DCI using a method I believe to be unique to me. I drew eighty different versions and picked my favorite. I am also, to the best of my knowledge, the only artist in Magic to embrace the medium of crayon. (Finally, as I only got paid $1, I think I’m also the only Magic artist whose supplies cost more than they were paid.)

The playmats are a high definition of my crayon masterpiece and are all individually signed by yours truly (see the photo above).
