...what is the "sex is just rock climbing" category

It was kind of a joke between me and a friend ("you wouldn't judge someone for having gone rock climbing with a bunch of different people") but honestly the more I thought about it the more I bought into it unironically because:

It is a physical activity done with one or more partners

You should only go rock climbing with people you trust to not let you fall

You should not go rock climbing with someone who is drunk or currently incapable of rational decision-making

Some people get super super super into rock climbing and do not shut up about all the places they have climbed and how many are left on their bucket list and these people are usually men between the ages of 20 and 35 and like it's fine dude I'm glad you're happy but I don't know what most of those mountains even are

While many consider it a fun activity, pressuring someone into climbing when they don't want to (or ignoring their feelings and just dangling them off a cliff,) could cause both psychological and physical trauma

There is no moral value to it whatsoever. Who you have gone rock climbing with (or whether you have rock climbed at all) has no bearing on who you are as a person. Imagine telling someone "it's not that heights make you nauseous, it's just that you haven't found the right person to belay you!" or "you need to save your first time rock climbing for someone special." That would be absurd.

For some people it is a deep and moving personal experience.

historically I have not asked myself "will this aggravate my hip flexor injury" before participating when perhaps I should have 😔

there’s been a really bizarre trend in the past couple years of TERFS/radfems getting pissed off about biology posts. posts about the bilateral gyandromorph cardinal (one half male, one half female), posts about older hens beginning to crow and act like roosters, posts about animals being animals. and it’s hilarious because they interpret these posts as some kind of agenda. no! these are animals not choosing any gender identity or sexuality but being born into bodies they have no control over. weird how that happens in nature huh

Do you want to hear about white-throated sparrows?!

Of course you do, they’re fantastic. They come in two models, one with tan head stripes and one with white head stripes. But the gene that controls stripe color also has a bunch of other effects! It’s a supergene!

To briefly sum up a grueling amount of fieldwork by people who were probably not getting paid nearly enough, basically the tan-stripes are nurturers and the white-stripes are fighters, across both males and females. White-stripes chase away intruders more, tan-stripes bring more food to the nest. Tan-stripe females bring more bugs to their chicks than white-stripes, white-stripe females are more aggressive and sing more.

There is a reason Jordan Peterson picked lobsters, not sparrows, to get all MRA about, because the sparrow ladies are ALL about the tan-striped males. Sexy nurturing tan-stripe males are immediately grabbed up by the more aggressive white-stripe females (who are also dead sexy if you’re a sparrow.) Then the remaining birds pair off, so you get tan and white couples reproducing in virtually all cases—nurturing male with aggressive female, hyper-aggressive male with hyper-nurturing female.*

And this is good!** Because it turns out that they can have a tough time if they don’t mate across stripes—white x white sparrows often come out undersized if they come out at all. There was some cool recent genetic sequencing and one particular chromosome is way funky, inverted, and scrambled in the white-stripes. So now every white-stripe has a funky chromosome and a normal one, and every tan-stripe has two normal ones.***

This is all really unique and means that white-throated sparrows effectively have four sexes, because they now only reproduce with a member of the opposite stripe and sex chromosome, and their offspring may be any one of the four sexes. The stripes have essentially become a second sex chromosome.

The geneticists involved think the funky chromosome probably showed up as a weird import from somebody gettin’ jiggy with another sparrow species. Presumably this created a hypersexy female whose white head stripes brought all the boys to the yard, and very unusually, that bred true.

Is that cool or what?!

I reblogged this a minute ago but I’m going to reblog it again, because I want to add another non-binary bird species: the ruff.

First of all, look at it.

That’s a male ruff, specifically. You can see how they get their name. The females don’t have that fancy collar. They just look like sandpipers, which is what they are.

Like other sandpipers, these are wading birds, but they live in wet meadows and marshes instead of by the seashore. During the breeding season they gather together and the males hold territories, called leks, in which they display to attract females.

At least, some of them do.

Some male ruffs do not display in leks. They have plainer, often white, neck ruffs, and they sort of wander around the display grounds courting the females wherever. The interesting thing is that the territorial males tolerate this. Research suggests it’s because females are more interested in a display ground that has both kinds of males. The ladies like variety, it seems.

But it gets even more complicated. In 2006, a third male form was discovered. This form is extremely rare, and doesn’t have male display plumage at all. It looks just like a female ruff in the field. The other birds, however, can tell the difference, judging by their behavior. These female mimics travel with other males when the sexes split for the winter, and during homosexual mountings (which are common, as they are in many other animals), they often top.

What’s really interesting about these ‘cryptic males’, or faeders, is that they are apparently super sexy. Seriously. Females and males both prefer mating with them. And it’s believed that, like the satellite males, the presence of a faeder attracts more females to the area, which benefits all three forms.

And the thing about these forms is they are fundamentally different from one another. The plumage and behavior differences last throughout a bird’s life, and are determined by genetics. They are functionally three different genders - one of which shows natural intersex characteristics. All three can breed with females, and females are more interested in breeding when all three are present. They know that diversity is the good shit. Which makes them much, much smarter than TERFs.

Despite the console being over a decade older than I am, I started with the NES that my grandparents had in their basement game room. I'm assuming it had belonged to my cousins at some point since I'm the youngest of this generation of my family, but yeah I got to play the first Zelda game and the second Kirby etc. I also got my turn on the double hand-me-down gameboy, but I was a lucky enough kid that after that and starting with the N64 and gameboy color I just had game systems to play with. Still love the Gamecube era but I've def used my PC more for gaming ever since Windows XP.

I've seen a few comments now like "but without chatGPT I don't know what to make for dinner" or "but character.ai is vital to my mental health" and those are not arguments for genAI. They're signs that you need to sort yourself out.

An adult human being should be able to decide what to have for dinner. Yes, some days it's rough and you don't wanna, but the point is, you can do it. And if you can't, you can learn. Hell, make post-it notes with dinner options, stick them on a dart board, and on days when you really can't decide, throw a dart.

You'd really rather put these decisions in the hands of an AI? As in, a company? And you don't see the issues with that? You don't see how easy that makes it for companies to manipulate you, influence your choices and your spending and your entire life?

And if your mental health relies on talking to a robot about your issues "because it listens and cares" - no, it doesn't. It can't listen. It can't care. It's lying to you. It's parroting phrases said by other people in similar contexts. It's an elaborate predictive text machine.

And again, you're just giving all of this information about yourself to a company. A company that wants to make money and likely has no compunctions about selling your data. You're trusting a software run by a company. And you don't think that'll be used to manipulate you? I've got a bridge to sell you.

What you need is actual human connection with other humans. And if you don't know how to connect with other humans then it's time to learn. Start by caring about other people. Take a genuine interest in them. Listen to them. That's how you connect. Not by treating others as entities to dump all your issues on or monologue at about your boring life. Sure, character.ai will put up with that and humour you, but there's literally nothing genuine about it and you will never ever learn to make actual friends.

Relying on genAI for any of this means you'll never learn, in fact you'll get worse, and if genAI ever goes away or you find yourself without access to a computer/phone/internet or the people running chatGPT or character.ai take down the website or put it behind a paywall, you'll be completely adrift. You are handing control of your life over to a piece of software run by a business. Instead of developing skills and independence you're just handing control over to someone else, someone who by the way does not care about you, someone who's only here to make money.

"But some people need--" to stop infantilising themselves, to start taking responsibility and control of their own life, to realise that they have agency and power, to learn that agency and control are not the same as blame and guilt and that someone trying to help them reclaim control is not trying to blame them for their situation.

People, yes even people with your exact diagnosis or background or medical history, were living and making decisions and dealing with their issues and going to therapy and learning and coping for millennia prior to 2022. As in, before genAI was even an option. You can do it. Trust me.

For those who missed it. No Mercy was a game available shortly on Steam (had no idea it was on Itch) that blew up and received intense shock and disgust from across the board. It was a game where the entire thing was rape and incest. With a key point thrown around being the player could rape their mother. You can read the developer's message before pulling the game here.

I do not know anymore about the game than just that because upon learning that tidbit I was entirely turned off. However, seeing that is a key event here certainly paints a certain view as to why this happened. My instinct is that this is an example of someone ruining it for everyone. Though I don't actually want that to be the justification here, because to a puritan crowd anything would be the thing that ruins it. And more importantly, it shouldn't matter that one individual instance was/considered problematic, that shouldn't take away everyone else's expression. Collective punishment has never been the answer to anything.

It's very late for me, so my thoughts are scattered right now. But it strikes me as those bs arguments against Ao3 because something problematic could be on the platform, it shouldn't be supported all together. So I'm just, irritated? Tired? Frustrated? I don't want my frustration to be at the hypothetical people ruining it for all, because that's not fair to the situation or constructive all together. My bigger anger is, I think, the mainstream forming broad sweeping ignorant assumptions based on a the worst example that was presented to them.

I've never heard of Collective Shout. Searching them up brought up this article at the top. Because they called those critical of the decision from Valve "porn sick brain rotted pedo gamer fetishists." And also wanted Detroit Become Human and Grand Theft Auto V banned, though those attempts notably did not work.

This article talks more of who aligns themselves with Collective Shout, including organization that want all porn and sex work banned, as well as elaborate on their complaints with Detroit Become Human and GTA V and how they're very deliberating hiding and stretching truths to make things seem worse than they are.

bluntly, this isn't "someone ruining it for everyone." I don't know exactly what content warnings No Mercy provided on its store page or within the game itself, nor do I know whether it officially violated any of Steam's/Itch.io's content policies, but it doesn't matter. unless they were literally out there actually raping people's actual moms, it's fiction. it's not a reason why reactionaries should get to tell credit processors who is and isn't allowed to do business.

Ehhh, the game got banned by Australia and New Zealand pretty quickly, and that isn't something our governments do willy nilly. Things have to be pretty bad to get on the radar of the Chief Censor's office. I think it's fair for Steam/Itch to remove something like that rather than deal with the headache of trying to region-block it, especially as more countries ban it. Since the ban makes it illegal to download in those countries, I suspect that would also put the game in the zone of a TOS violation regarding illegal content. I'm sympathetic to the maximalist form of the argument but I don't think it's necessary. The issue isn't whether what it depicted was legal or not, the issue is that the work itself was made illegal and that introduces issues that "awful but lawful" content doesn't have.

That said, payment processors and Collective Shout can all fuck off. The fact that I'm overall comfortable with Aotearoa's obscenity law settings doesn't mean conservative groups or payment processors get to go sticking their oars in.

I have always considered Australian/NZ censorship laws to be some of the most draconian in the English-speaking world, so that really does not impact my argument much. It's all well and good when it's a game with objectively kind of nasty themes that I have no personal interest in playing, but when the original cut of the Simpsons Movie is illegal to play because it shows Bart's yellow cartoon schlong for a few seconds as a joke, something there is wrong.
