No one's even trying to do "you hate it because the main character is a minority." It really is over.
It's pretty hard to pull the wool over people's eyes when season 1&2 were pretty beloved by all the people they usually paint as toxic. If it were because Pascal is Latino or because of "toxic fans who aren't satisfied with anything," those seasons would've been torn apart just as much as this movie.

You know, I've always wondered how many FIRE NATION refugees there were in Ba Sing Se. I mean, how many fire nation army deserters became fugitives because they refused to destroy some small earth kingdom town? How many simply couldn't stomach the war? Imagine, for a moment, that Zuko and Iroh weren't royalty, but they were still firebenders, still from the Fire nation, but just not... evil.
That right there is everything wrong with Jet. He sees two people living in peace and enriching their local community, and instead of embracing them, he racially profiles them and tries to get others to do the same. It doesn't matter where they're from it matters what they do.

Does anyone even like Good Guy Norman being some reverse-engineered MCU Tony Stark to Grown-Ass Man Peter Parker? Spider-Man's arch-enemy--a misogynist, an abuser, a fascist, and a mass murderer--becoming a mentor in a position of respect and authority and power that Peter himself is for some reason incapable of attaining? I know I don't like it, but does anyone?

i love when characters don't get to die
this is about villains/antagonists/general horrible people who finally face up to what they've done. especially if they try to pull the good ole "Dramatically Does One Good Thing To Redeem Themselves And Dies," but despite their best efforts they DON'T die. like yes motherfucker there's no easy way out for you, there's only the slow, awkward and painful process of learning to live with yourself. of learning to live with the weight of your mistakes. you get a second chance regardless of if you think you deserve it. you get to try to make amends and do good. you get to live.

God, this is so incredibly British.
Wild that they both saw each other "die" at least once in the marriage. I mean, MJ was actually "dead" for a hot minute not long before this.
"go to hell" is basic. "I hope James Gunn likes the look of your favorite comic book character and gives them an accurate costume while replacing their personality so he can tell dick jokes and then that becomes the default comic characterization" is smart. It's possible. It's terrifying.
That's pretty much my main gripe with Gunn. I've pretty much loved every superhero movie he's made to date, if only as films in isolation. The problem is that the guy kind of considers some characters free game to do whatever he wants with if they're obscure enough. He always manages to use these effective original characters in interesting ways, but I do feel incredibly bad for the fans who were pumped to finally see characters they love on the big screen only to have them be completely unfamiliar. This is followed by the horrible realization that because Gunn made his version more popular, the character you used to like in the comicsjust got body snatched by the adaptation version to compensate for the influx of new fans.
It's pretty much a fear that every comic fan has. I've even seen it happen slowly but surely to big characters like Spider-Man.
Just as an aside, I do feel like Superman is the exception for Gunn. He got just about every character right except for the Perry White raceswap. For that and the quality of his films, I just feel compelled to continue supporting his new universe, but I imagine the second he butchers a comic character that I think is really cool I'm gonna start having hangups.
