Look at him still looking straight ahead, allowing himself a barely-even-a-kiss press of his lips to the top of Shane's head. He really is like oh, this is working. Like I got my mans or I can pretend for a moment.
And how could those thoughts not be reinforced when Shane starts escalating things?
Little side note here: I think that people need to read the book. It adds so much more detail that you don't get in the show, especially for the tunameltdown scene. Shane's thoughts about it are sooo important to understanding why he does what he does. So I will add that context here later.
AAAAND we're back. So Shane initiates this. In the book he didn't, but Jacob Tierney the man that you are, this makes more sense. We'll come back to that.
What is Ilya thinking here? I think it's very easy to look at his face here and think he looks confused. Tbf he does. And maybe he is a little. BUT. I think we've seen this face before. In Vegas. He also looks confused-ish when he is starting to lose control over his stoic facade, just like he is here. Right when he says "fuck." This man is turned on and caught off-guard. That is his turned on face when he is at a point that he can't or doesn't want to keep it in check. Like, his favorite person is touching his dick! They did a little cuddle and now they're going to do something else.
So, he slides his hand down Shane's shirt for some skin-to-skin. Shane gets up to kiss him. All is going GREAT in Ilya's head. And he has no idea what's going on in Shane's. Which is for the best at the moment (soon to be worst).
Now for that book context: Shane is freaking out. He doesn't look like it but inside he is freaked. He's trying to make this into one of their normal encounters. Bring it back to sex. That's what is familiar, that is what they should be sticking to. This has been too domestic.
Ilya, in my head, is taking this as an escalation. Like oh we've kind of made it to another level of a relationship. Not a big step, but something. And Shane is fine. He isn't spooked. He's fine.
Narrator Voice: He was not fine.
There were cuddles and then this and this is going so well!
And then this look. He's just like "oh, like this is normal. We were being domestic and now this and there's no other motivations this is just what couples do." Not that he thinks they're a couple by any means but you get what I mean. Maybe FWB? I digress...
And these looks. So much reverence! I don't even have a better word for it. He is so in love-so disgustingly in love with Shane. He's so thilled that they are in the next percieved step of their relationship, whatever the fuck that might be at this point. And he's just like "let me touch you. Your chest, your legs, your ass. You are still here. You didn't dissappear. Is this real? Am I getting what I wanted?"
The awe of it all doesn't even leave his face when they are kissing! He is so down bad.
And now Shane has his dick out, too. And Ilya's still in disbelief that somehow everything is working out. He gets his man. For the next, like, 3 minutes. He gets to have him.

Can we talk about how both David and Grigori are on the right side of the frame, Yuna is to the left of Shane- but to the left of Ilya is just a sharp drop.
Hollanov are watching some sappy lifetime movie where one of the main love interests is still grieving the loss of her late husband, but by the end of the movie, after much prompting, she comes to the conclusion that he'd want her to be happy, even if that meant moving on with another man.
When the credits roll, hollanov turn to each other, almost simultaneously, and basically both say some version of "If you died tragically, I would mourn you until the day I died, I would literally never move on, I don't know what that bitch was talking about." And then they have crazy codependent sex about it. My mutually insane lovebirds ๐๐๐
The night before Shane might win his third Stanley cup, Ilya sends him the clip of his Stanley cup win.
Confused, Shane immediately calls him.
"Is this some new and unique way to psych me out before the final, Rozanov? I didn't know you had money on Detroit."
"No, I am sending for a good reason," Ilya laughs. "I know it sucks for us that when you win all your team will be kissing their girlfriends and Pike will be making out all gross with Jackie, and we will not be able to. So, I wanted to show you exactly where I first kissed the cup. It was on the top, right over where it says Ottawa 1905, left of where it says 'Challenge Cup'. I remember because I did this on purpose. We weren't anything then, but I was thinking of you. I couldn't help thinking of you. So if you kiss the same place, it will be a little like we are sharing a kiss. And only we will know about it."
And Shane feels the air clean knocked out of his lungs and the back of his throat get tight, as he barely gets out, "Baby, that's... Thank you. I don't know what to say. I love you so fucking much. I'll make sure you see our kiss, okay?"
"I will be watching. I love you, My Shane. Go show the world why Shane Fucking Hollander is the goat, okay?"
On the night Shane wins his third Stanley Cup, he kisses their spot on the cup, thinking only of Ilya, and longs for a day where he can pull him onto the ice like Scott did with Kip.
On the night Shane wins his fourth Stanley cup, he hoists the cup into the air with his captain, they both kiss the same spot on the trophy, and then in front of the world, on his home ice, Shane Hollander kisses his husband, and it feels like a promise fulfilled.
