Jonathan Joss was an Indigenous, gay man who was murdered on the first day of Pride month as well as Indigenous History Month. He died protecting his trans husband. Homophobia and racism aren’t marks of the past, and this is a heart breaking reminder of that.

Gentrification creates a stifling homogeneity in urban areas that makes it less suited for the everyday lives of the lower class and more suited towards the leisure and tourism of those with expendable income.

An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? It’s not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, it’s that most of us don’t have a way to do laundry in our own home.

Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We don’t hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I can’t eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I don’t have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.

What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, it’s that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.

Imagine if someone totally renovated your house and turned it into a mini theme park - they took away your sleeping space, where you prepare food, where you clean yourself and get ready for your day, and replaced it with things that will please people who are visiting, who have their own homes they can go back to, who are here not for their entire life but just as a distraction from their otherwise mundane existence. It’s not that you hate theme parks, it’s not like you’ve never been to a theme park and vow to never visit one again. It’s just that you need to live! To survive! And the leisure of those who have more than you should not invalidate your existence.

I am glad this has made the rounds. Some people feel a dense misunderstanding or misinterpretation concerning gentrification, and I think it helps to hear a description/explanation of what gentrification is from those who are both affected by it and educated by the culture from which it hails. I and many others enjoy some of the delights of gentrification while simultaneously having their livelihoods threatened by it.

Hayden has to come over to use Shane’s shower after one of their runs.

“I’m so sorry dude, Arthur shoved a bunch of toys down the toilet and our plumbing is all fucked up, the plumbers are there now but they don’t have an estimated time, can I just shower at yours?”

And Shane, of course, says yes.

While in the shower, Hayden notices a bottle of shampoo specifically for curls. Hmm. Weird. Shane doesn’t have curly hair.

And then there’s a bottle of what Hayden assumes is aftershave on the sink counter, but it’s in Russian so he doesn’t know for sure, smells good tho. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But he’s curious so he’s gotta ask. “Hey dude, why you got curl shampoo and Russian aftershave in there?”

And Shane chokes on his smoothie, but bounces back quickly.

“I like the way the shampoo smells, and the aftershave is the only one I found that doesn’t irritate my skin.”

Simple. Believable.

And Hayden, the himbo that he is, shrugs and accepts the answer and thanks Shane for the shower and leaves all nonchalant while Shane is having the freak out of his fucking life in his kitchen.

Texting Ilya like “stop leaving your shit here, Hayden saw your shampoo and was asking questions.”

And Ilya, cool as a cucumber, responds “you like to smell my shampoo in shower, gets you hard for me.”

And Shane, well……..

He microdoses Ilya’s pheromones when they’re apart by smelling his shampoo and aftershave and he actually stole them from Ilya last time he was there for that specific reason.

But he’s not gonna tell Ilya that.

Oh come on Ilya is the FIRST person Absolut Vodka reaches out to about a sponsorship and to be in their pride campaign.

Yuna is a little hesitant about being sponsored by a liquor company. "Is that really the message we want to send?"

But Ilya is all "I am Russian. I am vodka."

And he has fun with it! He's happy to have a sponsor that's a little less stuffy and one that is so open about LGBT+ support.

He does this fun kinda sexy ad and is so excited about it. When it gets released, he has Shane sit down and he puts it up on the TV for them to watch. Ilya narrates the whole thing, and they have to watch it multiple times so Shane can hear about every detail.

They also get some special addition Absolut bottles which Ilya proudly displays with the other trophies.

Trans people just existing is no more sexual than when cis people just exist.

One year ago, trans women held an iconic topless protest outside the Scottish Parliament. I love it when trans women hold topless demonstrations. If they're arrested, the state must admit they're women. If they aren't, it exposes the obvious contradictions of defining trans women as legally male.

Now, a year later, Parliament has its first two transgender members, one of whom represents JK Rowling in Edinburgh. We can't attribute this momentum solely to the protest, but the direct action seems to have galvanized a new political movement of trans people across Scotland.

Not USA based but I once spent an entire day being misdirected around the campus, having my medical privacy invaded and being given the wrong information before giving up and going to my GP and getting her to write me a medical certificate (she was disgusted with them). On top of it all there was a teacher who straight up told me that “maybe you should think about if this is the place for you”.

Ilya‘s insecurities about his relationship with Shane do get better over the years but they don’t just go away and he will definitely be overcome by them from time to time. So sometimes he‘ll say something like hah maybe you should date XYZ he seems like a nice guy, he could treat you right, not like me with all my issues haha. He doesn’t even mean to get a response out of Shane and Shane is just like what the fuck Ilya. Genuinely what he fuck, he is not just concerned he’s actually pissed off because everyone in his life has always been convinced they know better what’s good for him and Ilya can’t do this bullshit as well. And he’s also like you’re a fucking idiot how many more times can I tell you how much I love you, I asked you to marry me, etc what is your thought process here. anyway Shane’s actually waiting for an answer so Ilya‘s kinda like well if I keep reminding you that you have options I will know if you‘re actually choosing me and not live in constant fear you will suddenly wake up and realize how much I suck and don’t deserve your love and leave me. And if I remind you and you leave then at least I had some control over it and I don’t have to be scared of it happening anymore. And Shane genuinely doesn’t even know what to say
