Madame Zeroni is from Holes. Which may also perpetuate stereotypes, I can’t remember, it’s been ages since I saw it. (I mostly remember Sam, because Dulé Hill.)

I don’t believe Madam Zeroni is explicitly Romani, although she does embody some of those tropes - but a lot of that flavor comes from the whole eastern European (Latvian) setting. She also uses yiddishisms, so who knows. But my recollection is that she’s not any kind of an outsider - she’s another inhabitant of the village, alongside the Yelnatses and the Menkes, and the curse is more of a …cosmic imbalance than anything else. And notably not the only curse in the narrative. Kate’s curse is far more devastating - but then, the wrong done her is also far more profound. She’s not remotely mystically coded, but her wrath and grief stops the rain itself for a hundred years
