Anniversary of APOLLO 11 MOON LANDING
On July 20, 1969, 109 hours and 42 minutes after launch, Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin entered the lunar lander ‘Eagle’, made a final check, and the Eagle undocked from the lunar orbiter ‘Columbia’, where the third member of the crew Michael Collins, stayed in orbit around the moon. Partially manually piloted by Armstrong, the Eagle landed 0 degrees, 41 minutes, 15 seconds north moon latitude and 23 degrees, 26 minutes east moon longitude. Armstrong stepped out, and Aldrin followed 20 minutes later: human beings stepped on the moon for the first time. The two men spent 21 hours and 26 minutes on its surface. One of the astounding aspects of the mission was the seeming simplicity of the technology used to get man to the moon. According to Oliver Gassmann, professor of Technology Management, the mobile phone in your pocket has one million times more memory than the Apollo 11’s computer. Same about the procesor: the latest phones typically have more than 100,000 times the processing power of the computer that landed man on the moon 50 years ago.
“It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn’t feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.” –Neil Armstrong

The thing about Miss Piggy is that she kind of has a Roger Rabbit comedy superpower where she wins nearly any conceivable fight she's in. But unlike other characters of which that's true, like say, Bugs Bunny, who tend to win because they make the opponent play the game with their rules, Miss Piggy wins because the joke is that she can beat the shit out of literally anybody.
Bugs Bunny beats Thanos by setting up an airport and making him take off the Infinity Gauntlet to go through the metal detector.
Miss Piggy beats Thanos by karate chopping him in the face and sending him flying.
I'm gonna be honest, I fuck with a movie that's all about the collapse of a society that perpetuates certain morals and laws that itself is not willing to uphold when it comes to interacting with the rest of the world.
The Greeks used the excuse of a woman and the war of gods to wage war with an economic competitor, then showed up on their enemy's shores and broke their own laws of hospitality to win the war and ransacked the city and its people. The story of those actions traveled the world, making everyone afraid of the "people from the sea," even the Greeks who WERE the people from the sea.
The suitors cried about the laws not being upheld for them but were unwilling to uphold them themselves. The same society was terrified of this invisible enemy that would invade because of their lack of morals, unaware that THEY are the ones who broke the laws first. They are their own boogeyman. The fear of foreignors was never about the actions of foreignors but their own actions.
The gods haunt the narrative as an ideal. If they were confirmed real, then this movie becomes a warning against breaking away from "the correct religion." Instead, it is a warning of how mutual care and respect for your fellow man, whether gods exist or not, is the backbone of society, and without it, morality becomes something to twist and fear monger.
The gods couldn't exist in this adaptation, so a lot of the plot points involving the gods had to be changed or left out. "Nobody" only matters if Odysseus doxxes himself for poseidon to punish. (The crew members insisting that they definitely heard the cyclops say posiedon and jumping to the conclusion that he was poseidon's son and they were cursed was a great change in my opinion.) The wind bag can only exist if the gods exist. Athena can only guide Telemechus and Odysseus if the gods exist. ("Athena" potentially only being Odysseus's guilt for the preistess he let die who only shows up in times where his actions in Troy are thematically important was *chef's kiss*.) The Trojan War is only a war sanctioned by the gods if the gods exist. Odysseus being stuck with Calypso for so long needs another reason (the lotus) if it's not by the will of the gods. What would Circe and Calypso be like if they weren't eternal goddesses? Did the crew go to Hades, or did they just perform a spell that raised the dead?
Magic and Monsters can still exist without the gods, and everything else can be explained by superstition, nature, and bad luck. The ideal of the gods haunt the narrative so wonderfully.
I'm not a fan of Nolan's directorial aesthetic, but for the themes he wanted to explore, I think this was a fantastic retelling of the original. Accuracy isn't and shouldn't always be the goal. Sometimes, taking an existing story and making something new in order to speak to a different aspect of humanity is all we can really hope for.
This doesn't mean people HAVE to like it. There are plenty of "good" movies that I do not enjoy watching. However, acting like it's an objective thing to say that this was a failure of an adaptation is very annoying. It's a subjective opinion of art.
Pls my lovely moot give the full review (or rant) if you could
Pls pretty please
Just so we can scream together 😈😈😈
*CRACKS KNUCKLES* alright smokey, lets do this!!
First, some of the positives, but my commentary is half negative (mostly subjective):
Cinematography and action scenes that were to be expected of a Nolan film, was fine. Good even. Soundtrack matched the vibe.
Eumaeus' presence, even if he was more of Odysseus' peer than father in the Poem. I did like how the movie didn't forget him, or Argos for that matter. No Dolius, however, so THAT complexity with Odysseus killing his loyal slave's child is forgotten
The romance of O&P was somewhat okay. I love Anne Hathaway and her first scene with Matt Damon did feel like two couples arguing. Then again Odysseus goes on to say "If I don't go Agamemnon will kill my son" OKAY WELL. YEAH HE DID BUT NOT THAT WAY??? Agamemnon essentially TRICKED HIM INTO ALMOST KILLING HIS OWN SON TO ABIDE HIS OATH, and that wasnt even Agamemnon, it was Palamedes T-T whatever! Okay sorry tangent but, I did like the chemistry of both, and that the Athenean brooch Penelope gave Odysseus was sweet, "He never took it off" is sweet.
They made Menelaus such a horrible husband but the tonal whiplash of him being a good uncle is. Whatever! I also did like Helen apologizing to Telemachus (to Penelope) about her involvement, not that it was consistent with how she was in the actual Odyssey, but Lupita's Helen it was at least consistent. (but no Helen telling Telemachus about Odysseus herself, bc men and women can't be friends to Nolan)
No Peisistratus (no homo) but at least Telemachus had Mentor, who becomes his peer?? in this. Nolan then proceeds to kill him off. Poor guy.
I hate hate hate how they couldn't just let Odysseus be held captive by Calypso, and not that he was drugging himself with lotus flowers, but I did appreciate the dread of Odysseus being shown, and Calypso in fact being in the wrong, and that like in the book he went out of that Island quicker than a cheetah. I don't need another adaptation trying to justify her "love" for him.
Himesh Patel made a great Eurylochus with the script he had (removing his flaws) but I did cry when he and the crew died
Sinon and Antinous rewrite to become parallels. Im expecting AO3 fanfictions asap
What I hated / the negatives:
Everything else.
Okay joke!!! I mean first of all, telling Penelope to remarry is like betraying her, himself, and most importantly Telemachus. The whole plot is Odysseus seizing back his right as Penelope's husband, so why would he tell her to remarry?
Matt Damon tried, but he just isn't Odysseus. Cannot embody the man of many twists and turns
No Anticlea, no Nausicaä, no Queen Arete, no scene between Penelope and Eurycleia... and Athena reduced to being Odysseus' conscience and guilt instead of being one of the major strategical players. Great film for women I guess.
I hate how this movie was made for those who just wanted a distilled version of Odysseus and yet none of the gods in it. Yes, it had terrifying monsters and the sirens, but the gods were a big part of it, Athena most of all deserved better. Giving Athena a bigger role was one of Epic the Musical's strengths, even if it went into a weird direction.
No. Hermes 💔 No mention of him or the moly. or of Helen's drugs. Nolan really wanted that PG-13 rating huh?
"That face won’t launch a 1000 ship but 500" god. BIGGEST FUCK YOU NOLAN. Worst thing Menelaus said in canon was call Helen fat in Trojan Women. In a Euripides play. Never talks like that to his wife in both Homeric Poems. Like literally fuck you man.
In that note, why can't they just make Menelaus and Helen lax like in the Poem? Like even if, let's say, Helen never wanted to marry Menelaus and was forced to come back to him from Troy, how much time did they have before Telemachus' arrival for them to at least be amicable to each other? In Book 4, Helen drugs the wine to alleviate the grief and painful memories, something to both their benefit and because, hello, Helen actually loves the guy enough to not bare to see him cry. Why can't Nolan use that as a sort of lesson plan for Telemachus to go like "yall shouldn't actually dilute your issues in drugs" or something instead of making Menelaus into some evil abusive asshole but its okay because he's nice to our tritagonist?
Okay. Giving Lupita flowers though because she was great even with the shitty script. Chris Hemsworth should've been Menelaus (tita told me to add this part haha)
The absent Nobody scene, very stupid and was definitely made to not make Poseidon into a character, all because Nolan wanted RDJ to be Poseidon and cut it out of the script entirely because the actor was busy.
In that light, I really hated how the characters were forced into "good" or "bad" roles, making Odysseus so "good" that they had the other suitors bow down and Mia Goth was surprisingly not killed/executed. Kinda funny how Nolan got Penelope to go "you stay with them" to her and ONLY her when in the books 12 of the girls were sleeping with the suitors.
Had to roll my eyes at the whole of Odysseus regretting the Trojan Horse. Does a disservice to both Odysseus and the Trojan people, as if his guilt could bring those people back. Odysseus in canon will always have that in this conscious, but he also doesn't care and it doesn't stop him from finding happiness himself after years of hardship. You can have both and not make it insulting.
Small nitpick but we should've had the scene of Agamemnon asking about Orestes be more emotional like it was in the Poem. They were two fathers who never met their sons!!!! I hated the exposition dump like of course I, greek mythology nerd, knows that Orestes killed his mother to avenge his father but why should that matter? (Nolan let go of the Oresteia Nolan put that down DONT YOU DARE TOUCH THE ORESTEIA-). Also the flashback to Iphigenia being toddler level was just mean, she was a teenager.
We lost a lot of character complexities- Odysseus being prideful, Penelope using her own sadness as a shield/weapon against the suitors, Circe given a random ass crow and not being as enticing as she was in the book? No scene of Odysseus actually being clever with Nobody, his failure to communicate with the windbag, not even him being a genuine father to Telemachus and hugging him when he found out. And no olive tree bed, no Penelope tricking him into revealing himself.
This movie felt conservative in the way that none of the characters were allowed to actually be Hellenic and the gods are more "symbols" than actual gods who we KNOW DRIVE THE PLOT!!! The point of Nausicaa!!!
Also Telemachus just downright saying "my mother doesn't want you here" is stupid, so stupid, for a film that emphasizes Zeus' law so much.
I turned my brain off watching this movie so I enjoyed it 70% except that enjoyment included laughing at the absurdity of most of the scenes.
Too many Odyssey adaptations make Poseidon look like he has random beef and was being petty, or defending his cannibal son no reason, because I need to specify that Odysseus:
-sacked the shit out of a city he was patron of
-using deceotion hiding in a statue shaped like a symbol of his
-despite this Poseidon helped Odysseus out by sending a sea serpent to eat a guy yelling that the Trojan Horse was a trap
-Greeks then brutally sacked the city
-made no offerings for the gods and Odysseus took credit talking about how smart he was
-Odysseus then proceeds to meet his son and blind him
-Odysseus used deception again and would have got away with it, but proceeds to leave his full government name and address behind whils bragging about how smart he is
sucking at something is the first step to getting good at it
i do think there’s a world where ilya tells cliff marleau about the friendship plan and cliff is like “well if ur cover story is friendship than we need to make ur reputation with friends super gay king” and ilya is like “bro … you would do that … for us …” and cliff is like “no worries big dawg”. because like, hollander doesn’t do the gay for the homies thing naturally, but if roz has a reputation, it won’t be weird if he does it in public even if hollsy doesn’t reciprocate. cliff is a genius.
anyway, that’s how the internet spends a year speculating that ilya rozanov and cliff marleau have explored each others bodies. they are so all over each other and constantly tweeting gay shit about each other that ilya’s time with shane barely even gets a second glance. the first time ilya drags shane out to meet cliff, a photo gets posted on twitter and everyone is like “poor shane having to third wheel these two #ally”.
obviously shane is gnawing on furniture because he’s so jealous, but the plan does work. and when they get outed, cliff works it into his best man speech.
surprisingly forward-thinking of jim henson and co. to make a female character in the 70's that's allowed to be loud-mouthed and violent and kind of overwhelmingly romantic and even a huge bitch at times and not have a moment where any character asks her to change
going through all the muppet movies in a row made me realize that like. miss piggy was made in the 70's. and it's so rare even today to have a character like her. she's loud, she's selfish, she's funny, she's extremely vain, she's obsessed with romance, she's violent, she's kind of annoying, and there's not a single moment in any of these films where she's asked to tone down any of these personality traits. i am not joking when i say that miss piggy might be one of the best treated female characters ever written
Concept - sometime in the 2015-16 season Marley is traded to Ottawa. Both he and Ilya make dramatic social media posts about their husband going off to war or whatever. The Cliff/Ilya fans eat it up with a spoon. In 2018, when Ilya signs with Ottawa too, even the more serious sports media find themselves briefly considering the idea that there might be something more to this friendship, because why else would Rozanov go to a bottom ranked team like Ottawa?
Shane goes back and forth between weird pointless jealously that people think Ilya is fucking Cliff and relief that this is like a weird added security around their real relationship.
Ilya and Cliff both find the whole thing fucking hilarious.
Dumb people do not value prevention.
David did not tell Yuna what he saw at the cottage. But, he did come home visibly upset so he had to tell her something.
"Is Shane okay?" Was Yuna's first question.
"Yes," David was quick to reassure her. "He's fine. He's great."
"David," Yuna said worriedly, hand on his bicep. "Is Shane okay?"
"He really is. I promise, sweetheart. I would tell you if he wasn't," David promised her because he would. "But I - he was - he's probably going to be headed over here soon."
"Why?" Yuna started to get more worried, despite her husband's reassurances. "David, what happened? Did you two fight?"
David did interrupt his silent retreat but Yuna couldn't imagine Shane getting into a fight with his father over that.
"No," David caught her eyes. "Do you trust me?"
"Of course."
"Then please don't ask. I saw something I shouldn't have and I - I want it to be Shane's choice if he tells us. I promise you he's safe. We didn't fight. He's - he might be upset with me, but he's okay."
Yuna searched his face for another moment before she slowly nodded.
She had an idea of what David might have seen.
She had considered that Shane's 'silent retreat' might not be the complete truth. She also recognized how upset her husband was at unintentionally learning something about their boy that he wasn't ready to share.
"Okay," Yuna pulled him in for a hug. "I'll make some tea."
"I feel so horrible."
"Shane loves you, he'll understand," Yuna said.
"I hope so," David pulled back. "I can make the tea. Shane will probably want some if he comes over."
He used to make Shane hot chocolate after nightmares, or doctor visits, or difficult practices. When he was a teenager, he started asking for tea instead.
Yuna, sensing David needed something to do, said, "use the new one my aunt sent us. It takes a little longer but I think Shane will like it."
~*~*~
"So, what did you see," Yuna asked her husband as they watched their son and his boyfriend, Ilya Rozanov, drive away.
"I wondered how long it would take for you to ask," David smiled.
"Hush you," Yuna glared. "Like you wouldn't be curious. Unless, god, did you walk in on-"
"No," David stopped her. "They were just walking up from the dock. I would have left but when I noticed it was Rozanov - or Ilya, I mean - I was just frozen there."
"Then how did you know they were, you know, together?"
"Well they kissed on the porch," David winced. "And Ilya..."
"Ilya what?"
"He, uh, had his hand on Shane's…bottom."
Yuna and David stared at each other for a few seconds before Yuna couldn't take it anymore, smile spreading across her face and burst out laughing, hand gripping her husband’s shirt to hold herself up.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Yuna laughed out.
"Yuna!" David admonished but he was laughing too. He reached out to steady her. "It's not funny!"
"When you put it that - that way!" Yuna tried to gather herself. "Ilya Rozanov. Ilya Rozanov. I can't believe it."
"He's a sweet kid," David was still smiling, thinking about Ilya standing awkwardly by his son, happily eating pasta, saying he'd leave the team that drafted him for their Shane.
Yuna softened. "He really is. He looks so much younger in person."
"Well," David wrapped an arm around her waist. "I think he might be ours now."
they don't really use pet names when they're around other people but their teammates learn very quickly that there is ilya (positive) and ilya (negative) and rozanov (fuck yeah that was fucking gorgeous) and rozanov (if you do not shut the fuck up immediately i swear to fucking god) and shane (adoring) and shane (sad) and hollander (that's how you fucking do it!) and hollander (sit your fucking ass down or we will have a problem) and these distinctions are way more important to keep track of than the five times a month hollander calls cap "baby" and cap's face goes all sappy
I reblogged this last month, tagged it, and said “might as well see if it works.” I used this video as a reference to find all the forms that i needed (which is A LOT, especially if you’re a dependent) and sent them through the mail, not really allowing myself to hope.
